  • Hey guys my name is Ben and welcome back to another video. As the title suggests, I manage to find a free mod for the Boxster S, that allows more air induction and even, maybe a few extra ponies.

    It doesn't block the intake off. It is a baffle plate to reduce air swirl on the induction snorkel. Air travels round it.

    Porsche blocked it off so no water or debris gets inside the engine intake, so like you said, it’s only a couple of horsepower and it’s not worth removing and recking your very expensive engine.

      Also the snorkel separate hot air with cold, really it's. A form of cold air induction With Hydrolocking protection

      the only time water will get sucked in the engine is if you drive the car in that high of water also if you’re driving in really rainy conditions you may have a chance to get water sucked in so as long as you avoid those two things alt together you should be fine I live in Texas where it’s very dry all the time and I have a 986 boxer that I do snorkeled no problem at all also I don’t drive it when it’s very rainy and crappy outside because one it’s mid engine and two soft top both do not like the rain made engine cars don’t handle well in the rain and it’s a soft top so when it’s really rainy I don’t drive the car for those two reasons I don’t really notice the horsepower gain on my car with that Dee snorkeled but I did notice a noise increase which is really what I did it for anyway don’t do it for horsepower and think you’re going to get more horsepower out of it because that’s not gonna work do it for the noise and to make the vent on the 987 functional that’s what I would do it for if I had a 987 because what’s the point of buying a car with two vents on either side being a male engine car and only one being functional it makes no sense it’s like a fake vent that leads nowhere why even put it on the car if it’s only for aesthetics so me I would just do it to make it functional because function over form has always been my philosophy and will continue to be

    Maybe, because I grew up in the 60s and 70s when muscle cars were new and and every one wanted ally wheels, but I've never understood why anyone would spend money on black wheels? You can't see them, they might as well be standard black steel wheels. So for me, leave the vent's silver, at least you can see them and they are really nice.

    Louder due to a hole in the bodywork. The vent on that side expels hot air from the engine bay which is why it appears blocked so forcing air in is counter productive. It’s not connected to your intake so does nothing. If excess water gets in you could get belt slippage.

    • @HaxPleKxYglaSS
      @HaxPleKxYglaSS 4 года назад +6

      100% wrong. It is connected to the intake. The air extractor is on the other side and there is no protection against water infiltration. There is just a fan. I have done that a long time ago on mine, just remove that plate, it's almost useless and you gain more reactivity and a better sound.
      You may try to help with your comment but when you talk about Porsche first own a Porsche...

    • @tweetdriver
      @tweetdriver 3 года назад +1

      @@HaxPleKxYglaSS Correct. On my 986, because of the shape of the snorkel tube, the end of it where air enters is smaller than the end that attaches to the intake. Therefore, when you desnorkel, you are actually allowing more air into the intake, it just might not be a pure cold air intake anymore, since the air is coming directly from the ambient air inside the engine compartment. However, I think that's a minimal effect due to the shape of the structure and placement of the engine, and the fact that it is still getting air through the body vent too.

    Word of warning be careful when cleaning or getting car clean at these car washes , I had a Muppet spray high pressure water in my side vent on the other side , the water went in and all over the drive belt pulleys , the belts squeaked when I drove off from car wash , 2 miles down road drive belt came off lost all power steering and alternator , limped car home , took the back panel off behind seat to look at belt only to fined belt shredded caught and broken the pulley tensioner and tensioner plate that is connected to the engine !! The engine had to be taken out I kid you not !! I was so angry ...
    The vents good in silver or black , but as you have the gloss black wheels will look good in black same as black edition model , very easy mod , I looked at changing my vents to spyder ones but silly money .. pin striping is a good touch to add to be rim of the wheels white or silver.. costs peanuts if you dont like can peal off 4 or 5mm .. springs on it’s way I’ve got a new exhaust mod I’m working on with a spare exhaust hopefully it won’t be too loud , keep up the good videos great stuff ..:-)

  • @bartonmclean7037
    @bartonmclean7037 4 года назад +2

    Hello, On the 987 only the driver side is connected to the engine air intake. Whereas, on the 981 both sides feed air directly into the engine for increased air flow and performance. The 981 also has two engine air filters, one on each side, where the 987 only has one. The reason for dual side vents on the 987 is purely aesthetics, plus the "active" air intake is associated with the drivers side (RHD versus LHD). Therefore, desnorkeling does not impact bhp.

    • @KevinGre
      @KevinGre 3 года назад +2

      The right side is an engine bay vent and will exhaust with a fan when the engie bay rises above a certain temp. Somehting you'd notice on a track day in CA with temps over 37C, so not something that you encounter much in the UK.

  • @dgrano20
    @dgrano20 2 года назад

    Apparently the reason for the plate is simply bc it's cosmetic. It's not dual intake like the 981. But Porsche didn't want to design a car with only one side intake which would look odd so Porsche kept the other side intake and just blocked it off as it served no functionality for performance or sound. But it could pose a risk to the engine for not having it blocked off as its an extra opening that otherwise would have been blocked by another air filter. So yes those pointing out that removing the panel is a risk factor are correct. But not that much of a risk as there simply is no intake for the engine on that side. But those making claims of water and the like are all forgetting that tens of thousands of dual intake boxtsers exist on the road that have no such panel blocking either side intakes and they have zero issues or wild rumors of fire from objects getting sucked in.
    Any added sound by removing it could be argued as removing any panel around the engine would increase any sound. But splitting hairs at best and mostly a placebo.

    This is one of the things I did to my 986. Also, those vents were originally black on my car (also a black car), but I painted them silver (only the actual vent bits though, not the entire casing). Now that my car has a nice matte/satin black paint job, I've painted them red, along with a few other bits, and it looks the bee's knees, as you guys might say. haha Oh, and also, the desnorkel did make a noticeable change in the sound with the throttle open. It got even better when I did the free mod to the exhaust too. That one changes the sound, even at idle.

      No it will run hotter. That is a hot air exit vent, forcing air in is counter productive, that’s why it appears to be blanked off yet has a tube behind the screen. The increase in noise is due to a hole in the bodywork, nothing more. There is no increase in power, just a placebo effect caused by the increased noise.
