This mixing type is really as professional as it gets, teaching us completely free too. We are so lucky to live in a generation where knowledge is so omnipresent, thanks a lot to whoever taught us techniques people study to learn completely for free!
I love the before and after in the beginning you don’t actually know how helpful that is. As a moderate beginner, I don’t really know how to look up certain tutorials correctly, so by the time I get through the video, it ends up not even being what I was looking for. So keep that up and thanks!!
This is by far THE BEST vocal mixing tutorial available on RUclips! You covered everything so clearly and with such enthusiasm that I never started to dose off. I did notice that you didn't cover pitch correction, but maybe you have a singer with perfect vocals. Man, I'm so upset that I wasted so much money on plugins that promised to do exactly what you accomplished with the stock plugins. =(

I watched this video two years before and was meticulously following the steps for my mixes from that time. Being little bit away from the tool for some time, I had to refresh once again today for doing my current mix. Thanks a lot for the good stuff.
I’ve been using logic for 2 years now but this video has taught me to use techniques that really do improve a track. Thank you so much man, love the video!
I love this tutorial because allot of people believe stock plugins can't get the job done right and that's an insult to creators. Not saying stocks plugins are the best, but with the right ears and knowledge you can get the job done with a great sound!
Thanks for explaining this process the way that you did. most of the time people make tutorials thinking that everyone knows a certain amount or understands a certain level about whatever the tutorial is about and that will leave you confused or lost after watching. You did a great job of making things clear on all of your moves within logic pro. Once again thanks
The trouble with so many of these videos is that most people just do not understand "teaching" or instructing. They not only speak and move through the content to fast or they have no clue as to methodology. You understand both i.e.you pause long enough to for the viewer to see where you're pointing which for novices or those unfamiliar with the digital world's jargon or this program's terminology. Good job, kid!!!!
this comment is kind of stupid when you can pause, rewind, slow down video speed...and much more on this here video and the platform it is posted on. you should consider your own part in the learning process. additionally. at any point you can look to other resources. like pause and look something up. you just made a comment that made you sound dumb af.
Wow. Never occurred to me to use the remove silence function to separate audio in individual regions for the gain automation. I was using the scissors tool. Thanks for the tutorial.
That tool is also fantastic for splitting up sounds to throw into EXS24 or Alchemy - that way you do it by regions rather than transients and get exactly what you want.
I’m a singer, but I’m a one man show so production is a huge part of my time. I’ve done 100 videos on RUclips and I thought I was pretty decent with logic. 2 minutes in and I already learned something extremely useful I never knew. You earned yourself a sub!
Vocal automation has been driving me crazy, I always end up creating weird volume jumps that sound totally off. But this video has made me realize I was doing it at the very START of the vocal chain, when in fact I should've been doing it post-compression and EQ. This has been a game changer! Hoping I find it easier now.
The subtle difference between EQ bands is crazy..my hearing is going to get so much more finetuned doing this. These tips have already helped a ton with my mix so thank you!
Astounding to see you have an incredible technique to the way you teach music production. Im just amazed how much I learned watching one of your lessons than watching 4 videos of someone else explaining this. You have inspired me.
Just what I have been looking for. Thank you! 2 questions: 1. What is the best PAID vocal plugin do you recommend? 2. Do you have any tutorials on how to do this for voice-overs?
Love that distortion feature. Really livens up my voice in a mix along with the sharpness of the Opto compressors. Thanks for these vids! My songs are almost coming alive!
Barely getting into mixing, slightly able to understand what is being said, but I am eager to try the techniques, and I'm hoping for positive results. Anything to make this voice sound better is a blessing.
My most challenging hurdle for vocal mixing is singing in tune I'm not a great singer... I'm getting better though! In terms of actual *mixing*, though, it's gotta be the de-esser. I need to put it on pretty hard for my vocals, but I'm getting there.
Thx for this load of info. It proves mixing is still such a speciality. I prefer to let me tracks being mixed by an experienced mixer. I also dont hear all these subtil differences that you hear after processing. Ear loss is one of the reasons i'm afraid... (i'm a drummer)..
One thing i’d like to comment on is the reduction of the makeup gain. Makeup gain drives the distortion, if i switch it on(like i almost always do) i compensate with the output gain. If i want more saturation, maybe i add 5db makeup and reduce the output to compensate.
I haven’t been following you that long but I can honestly say that you have the most straight forward and informative videos that I’ve seen yet 💪🏽🔥 thanks I really appreciate it
This is an incredible video. Great job! I had to share this with you because I am that guy. “In phonetics, sibilants are fricative consonants of higher amplitude and pitch, made by directing a stream of air with the tongue towards the teeth. Examples of sibilants are the consonants at the beginning of the English words sip, zip, ship, and genre.” I think you are getting this confused with the word “syllables”. But whatever, small potatoes, this is a great video. Subscribed!
compression and adding color to my vocals was and IS the most challenge thing i'm encountering as of right now. I'm still a beginner really, getting into bussing, color addition (compression, saturation, delay, reverb, etc), and that's only vocals! because i'm into beat making as well. However, i believe those sleepless nights and days learning about this stuff will help me get somewhere. I know it.
One of my challenges in mixing vocals is the consistency of the tone. Like the verses have a different tone and range, sort of, than the chorus. The chorus just feels like the vocal is sung too high, like belting. And even when I turn the gain down, it still has that belting tone. Any advice is appreciated! Awesome video by the way! Definitely saving this.
I definitely know what you mean. Try making separate tracks for the different sections of the song and splitting up the vocals between them. Obviously it can be really time consuming to go through this process multiple times, but you can just copy and paste the first track and then make slight tweaks to the others. To fix the belting tone, you might try cutting back in the midrange where you really get that beefiness--if that's what you're referring to. I've never actually tried that myself, it's just an idea. Personally I like vocals to have a good thickness in the midrange. Honestly there's only so much you can do though and ultimately the best way to get a good vocal is to have a good vocalist. I say this as a singer who spent years fussing with mixing my own voice with little satisfaction, only to eventually determine that I simply needed to get better at singing.
ON SOME REAL THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST DAMN VIDEO TUTORIAL EVER. YOUR AWESOME FOR THIS. I JUST LISTENING BEFORE I GET BACK TO THE STUDIO BUT IM ALREADY FEELING LIKE A DAMN PRO ...
WOW, thanks for your tutorial. I normally flunk on vocals, ditching idea after idea, not putting anything out. I have been suffering from so much anxiety at the thought of doing vocals but I have decided to tackle the issue and tried to find a home logic pro x tutor but couldn't find one but after watching your tutorial I am now confident that I can finally get it right and start releasing music? Fingers crossed. Thanks again :)
Wow!!!! Those vocals sounded amazing omg. I am trying to become my own music producer at the moment and am starting my journey learning everything I can about vocal recording and editing first. Thank you so much for this and so glad it was the first video I found!! :)
I followed that through whilst mixing my songs :) vocals stood right out smooth and well presented. I've got a greater understanding of how compressors are used, also I've never used or knew the phat fx was there. I've used bitcrusher to distort and add the rough edges to my voice, but phat fx is much better :) I only have and use the DAW pluggins. My theory is, if I can make a great sound from the stock pluggins, then I'm ready to explore far better pluggins. Thx really enjoyed this tutorial, it helped see another way of presenting vocals :)
The order of applying these things is very valuable. Thanks! I've got a ton of vocal tracks over one guitar, so it's going to be a lot more intense than I wanted. But now I know what to do.
Best video I’ve seen for vocals A to Z. Would you consider a similar one, maybe a part two, showing how you’d tweak the process for different genres? Also for just vocal + guitar.
The most challenging thing is dealing with artists :p Seriously, though, I'd try to avoid getting caught up in doing a lot of these things when they are around. You'll get into a place where you have too many cooks in the kitchen and waste a lot of time second guessing moves. Also, make sure you are mixing in a comfortable, good-sounding room. The wrong room can make you incredibly frustrated. This channel has talked about the importance of a good room before. It's really critical to getting everything just right.
Hey man! LOVE these videos... My favorite shortcut, for what it's worth, is opening the window that allows you to change the gain of the individual clip so you dont have to go the left and open it every time. You've shared so many nuggets, hopefully this one helps you!
this one time we got to hear a little bit more than "static burnin down a road i ve yet to know. Mmhmm." was like a dream coming true i didn't know i have had!
You really make a great video for me as beginner in Logic, the most challenging part for me is using compressor, not much different, but its have something special after using compressor. Thank you for making this video. Sorry for my bad english.

This is now my favorite video on RUclips, but the only word I have left in my vocabulary is "staaatic"
Haha holy crap, the whole video I was thinking, “wtf is she saying here!?!?” Mystery solved.
Me as well my friend..lol
Somewhere around the 28th minute i started hearing "phtaaaatic".
"Steady" I heard.
Watched this video before going to bed. Woke up the next morning singing 'Staaaatic.....'
same here HAHAHAHA
STAAAAAATIC. mmmmmmmmMMMMMM
Thought it was "Steady"
This was really helpful! I've just been slapping on EQ, Compressor, and Reverb and calling it a day, but I know I need to step up my game.
This is insanely helpful, thank you. As a beginner, it’s great to have such a comprehensive tutorial, especially one that only uses native plugins
This is by far THE BEST vocal mixing tutorial available on RUclips! You covered everything so clearly and with such enthusiasm that I never started to dose off. I did notice that you didn't cover pitch correction, but maybe you have a singer with perfect vocals.

I was about to right this down, but i went look for someone that did it first! is in facy the best video, kinda change my life!
pitch correction typically isn't a part of "mixing", and would happen during the editing phase.
Why would you use pitch correction?
