It is no longer than 150 years ago that essentially anyone in Austria would have said "Yes, I am a German". "A German", not "German". It was different then.
@@joshuahillerup4290 I don't feel like I know how to answer that, it's too broad a question. I can say that despite quips or slight exaggeration for comedic effect in my first reply to you there is some truth to everything I wrote in how many Austrians see themselves/their country.
Australia has a red ensign version of our national flag which is our civil ensign. Up until the 1950s the blue ensign version was only allowed to be used by government entities, civilians were required to use the red ensign. But since then the rules were relaxed and the civil red ensign is now mainly only used on Australian registered civilian ships. (The red ensign was recently also used by some protesters doing that thing where they use an older version of the national flag to support a return to a previous political order during the protests against our covid lockdowns.)

Australia used to have a state-civil distinction as well; the state flag had the blue background we all know today, but the civil flag had a red background
Funnily enough my PFP deliberately doesn't use the UK's State/Civil flag but the older version (designed for James VI when he wanted to bring his realms together) without the cross of St. Patrick, which was added following the Act of Union with Ireland in 1801, I'm part Irish in case you're wondering. I wonder how other flags are viewed in Austrian Law, only because I saw footage of a protest in Vienna and of the flags I could Identify there were; the Austrian Empire Flag, the Austro-Hungarian Flag, the German Empire Flag, the Holy Roman Empire Flag and the Flag of the Eurasian Economic Union, I also saw the European Union flag but that was being ceremonially taken down so I don't think it counts.
I thought the real Austrian Flag has the Gösser Logo on the back side. But it seems to depend what sporting event you are watching. Downhill skiing has the Gösser flag, Ski jumping the Stiegl flag. Maybe that should be the next video topic.
Was about to point out that there is a very similar video but in German. Then noticed it is another one of your channels. Thanks for publishing in multiple languages!
In Germany we have the state and civil flag like you showed, but theres an alternative unofficial flag that looks just like the state flag, but uses a different Coat of Arms on it. The Oficial state flag has a Coat of Arms with a round base and the eagle has more spread out wing feathers. The unoffical flag uses the oficial German Coat of Arms that has a pointy base and the wing feathers are straight down among other smaller things.
We have a similar problem in poland where people on national holidays hang out flags with coat of arms on it which is reserved for government and sea ships beacouse they don't have a clue that it's wrong
Interesting thing - in Poland we have two state flags (one with Coa and one without), with rules which state entities may use each, but civilians may use both.
Scotland has a similar situation. The blue flag with the white X is the civil flag, and the yellow flag with the red lion is the royal flag. Scottish football fans like to wave the red lion flag even though strictly speaking they shouldn’t.
When I saw the title I was thinking it was illegal cause it was the old imperial flag and got cooped by neo-na*i’s. There was a similar issue in Germany. Glad it wasn’t that!
A distinction like this used to be made in some British colonies, the union jack in the corner on either a red background or a blue background depending on the purpose, but this went away.
Actually the law defines the size ratio with 2:3 and the colours of the Eagle which both are slightly different for the Flags sold. When you fly These Flags would be interesting how a cort would rule.
And Germany just has 2 versions where the eagle in the centre has 5 or 6 stripes on each wing, 5 being for everyone (afaik), 6 for official buildings etc
It's the difference between the "Federal Coat of Arms" and the "Federal Shield". Having the coat of arms on a German flag is condoned, as it's basically a different flag on it's own, however not an official one.
One of the pubs in my town (England) brought a flag pack for the Euros that I noticed had the eagle on it. I thought it was obsolete and me and my friends were memeing about the pub recognising Austria-Hungary. Turns out they’ve been breaking the law this whole time.
My Twitter profile banner is the state flag of Finland. Finland isn't as strict, though. I think that only having a non digital flag is a crime. And not really enforced.
I think Finland is culturally much more strict when it comes to flags. I have never seen a physical state flag where it shouldn't be. And you can get a fine for flying the state flag in Finland too, the law doesn't even differentiate if the use of the flag can mislead anyone into thinking something is a government office, or if you are just waving it casually.
I don’t understand how nobody talked about the new art style of this video so far. It looks pretty nice but i kind of like the old one a bit more, but i also understand why you would change it.
In the German case, the Federal Service Flag show the "Bundesschild", a special version of the federal coat of arms reserved for this special use-case. If you put the regular federal coat of arms on a flag, it becomes the "Bundeswappenflagge" (federal coat of arms flag) which may be freely used by everyone.
(2:15) I know I've commented on it before, but the usage of US icons for representing Austria is still weird. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is a song written by people from USA about their travel through Maryland. It's not connected to Austria as far as I can see. I just find it weird and odd, and I think something more Austrian could be used ... it could be a clever reference that only some gets, and some might also start associating it with Austria. I just think you could be more clever :)
Specifically used "Country Roads" because it's well known everywhere, quite popular among Austrian patriots, and captures the sentiment I was going for in the scene.

Hi, Tapakapa. I love this video! Could you make a vexillological video explaining the terms "civil flag & civil ensign", "state flag & state ensign", and "war flag & naval ensign"?
Same happens in Peru. People decor their houses in Fiestas Patrias or the childs decor their schoolbooks with the State flag cuz it has a Coat of Arms.
I live in the states, but I have an Austrian flag with the eagle on it. In fact I don't think I've seen the civil flag in person. Also I didn't even notice your accent until you said you were Austrian.
Here in Chile we have a similar system of law, the Civil and State flags are the same but the state flag has the coat of arms in the middle, here however I think is more popular that division, seeing that in protest and in the national day I only see our civil flag and the state flag is use just by the president, making it more a presidential flag than a state flag. Supposedly you can get fined if you fly the state flag but I can't remember the last time that happened
In Serbia we have a similar situation, except we use the flag with the coat of arms for international and government purposes, and the one without the coat of arms is meant for civil use. However, you can rarely see the version without the coat of arms. Which is a shame. However, that one IS used (for all purposes) by Republika Srpska.
As someone who has an Austrian state flag in America (was a prop from Sound of Music), this was an interesting watch! Also, what's the music in the beginning?
The state flag contains the stripes twice - in the background and on the shield. That is like if I wasn't sure if it is an Austrian flag, and the eagle was showing me that it indeed is an Austrian flag.
Welp, that explains a lot. I knew of that 3600€ fine and since I've been living in Austria for some time, I've been using this flag at my apartment for 7 years and haven't been fined. I sincerely do belive that this is the official Austrian flag.
Do one on the Scottish Lion Rampant (Royal Banner). I’m sure there’s similar ideas around it’s use being restricted but allowed to be carried by individuals at certain times. But it’s seen everywhere
I'm austrian, as far as it is beknownst to me, no one ever was punished or cited before a court for using the Flag with the eagle emblem "Dienstflagge des Bundes" = "Service Flag of the Federation" in fact you will see it flown by averages joes at Sport events all along. Basically these passages in the law are drop dead. In fact if the goverment would try to enforce it zig-thousands of these flag would be sold and flown in protest. But it is true, that the law is valid and the altering versions between civilian and federal flag do exist. Besides as the federal countries and their people do have a strong local patriotism it is very likely to come across a regional flag flown more often while beeing in austria than the national flag.
I have been collecting flags of countries I have travelled to solo, and it bugs me how difficult it is to find the civil flag of Austria in every single souvenir shop (well, mainly in Vienna and Salzburg). Every one of them used the flag with the coat of arms, which kind of gave me the impression that, well, I am not sure if I should be buying that to display in my flag collection. Ended up caving and bought the state flag, but bearing in mind I needed to treat it with more respect / caution
I'm 50/50 Polish & Austrian and in the ojczyzna🇵🇱 the Polish flag with the coat of arms is only flown at embassies, consulates and by the vast majority of the Polish diaspora. This is partly to avoid confusion with other identical flags like Oberösterreich, Tirol & Südtirol.
Serbia has the same situation where our state (official) flag has a coat of arms on it and is used internationally, while the civil flag only has the red, blue and white tricolor.
It follows similar logic to impersonating an officer of the law. You can dress up as a policeman all you like, as long as you're obviously not a real one, nor actively trying to convince people you are.
That's what I was thinking. Also, I don't know what the free speech protections are like in Austria, but it's possible that punishing non-deceptive use would raise free speech issues.

I would love to see a video explicitly about the Austrian identity
- We are not German, don't call me German or I will get indignant.
- We invented coffee and classical music. Also psychotherapy, probably not by coincidence, but I wouldn't know.
- Everything's fine. There are no problems, only compromises, also I don't like change. Just work around it, it'll be fine.
- Don't ask me about my family's history between 1938 to 1945.
@@aForkfulOfGold the Austrian relationship with Germany feels kind of like the Canadian relationship with the US, although I suspect there's more to the Austrian identity than "not German"
@@joshuahillerup4290
There is of course, yes! But still that is a big part of it, due to historical reasons between the German unification by Prussia in 1870 (instead of a loose confederation under Austrian stewardship, which the Habsburgs seemed to have in mind) and the ramifications of WW2.
It is no longer than 150 years ago that essentially anyone in Austria would have said "Yes, I am a German".
"A German", not "German". It was different then.
@@aForkfulOfGold are there other cultural things across Austria, that aren't defined in terms of another country?
The symbols of hammer, sickle and the mural crown embellishing the eagle's head represent peasantry, workers and bourgeoisie. The golden sickle and the golden hammer were introduced onto the eagle in 1919 during the First Austrian Republic.
The hammer and sickle are symbolic for farmers and workers and the peasantry.

Austrian monarchists must love the state flag.
Aw man i wish the austria flag had the emblem with the bird
Finally someone else acknowleges the fact that the design of the coat of arms of Monaco would make an awesome flag.
3:40 “Hello I am the Austrian Chancellor!” Me (whispering): That failed art school 😏
My new dream is to go out in public with the Austrian state flag and tell some child "HELLO, I AM THE AUSTRIAN CHANCELLOR."
The Real Austrian Flag has a Stiegl Logo at the center!
... and the Real Austrian National Anthem is the Radetzkymarsch. ^_^
I thought the real Austrian Flag has the Gösser Logo on the back side.
But it seems to depend what sporting event you are watching. Downhill skiing has the Gösser flag, Ski jumping the Stiegl flag. Maybe that should be the next video topic.
@@Tapakapa Why do I now have a picture of marching corn cobs in my head?
Was about to point out that there is a very similar video but in German.
Then noticed it is another one of your channels.
Thanks for publishing in multiple languages!
Even as a finn, I didn't know the differene between our own national and state flags! Now I do, woo!
The official coat of arms is called "Bundeswappen", the coat of arms shown on the state flag is called "Bundesschild".
We have a similar problem in poland where people on national holidays hang out flags with coat of arms on it which is reserved for government and sea ships beacouse they don't have a clue that it's wrong
To be fair that eagle is a banger
This guy needs to be more popular
Tapakapa out of nowhere became EXTRA THICC
Thiccapa.
Interesting thing - in Poland we have two state flags (one with Coa and one without), with rules which state entities may use each, but civilians may use both.
Interesting!
Scotland has a similar situation. The blue flag with the white X is the civil flag, and the yellow flag with the red lion is the royal flag. Scottish football fans like to wave the red lion flag even though strictly speaking they shouldn’t.
I was in this german rollercoaster park called “Europapark” and there in the Austria section a boat actually had that flag.
Fricken hell Tapa, this was so funny. I always love your work but this was a cut above in the amusement stakes. Bravo sir Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼😁
Glad you enjoyed it! ^_^
where da stickfigures
when i went to Salzburg, the State Flag was the only flag i could buy, i couldn’t find the Civil Flag
😭
When I saw the title I was thinking it was illegal cause it was the old imperial flag and got cooped by neo-na*i’s. There was a similar issue in Germany. Glad it wasn’t that!
4:25 - I just noticed what that good birdie is holding.... Oh dear. Austrians, you ARE an enigma.
A distinction like this used to be made in some British colonies, the union jack in the corner on either a red background or a blue background depending on the purpose, but this went away.
4:19 a bird who likes hammers and sickles.
I think i like the previous art style in your videos more, but i guess its your choice which you want to use :p
in tel aviv university, the main entrance has a row of flags from many different countries. the flag for austria is the state flag.
Lebanon looking at this and saying "hey, there's supposed to be no confusion but from a far enough distance, there's definitely some confusion" 🇱🇧🇦🇹
This is the 4th video in a row with a flag and nothing else for the thumbnail
As always, great video. You style is so unique
I'm so happy to be here to see it, love your videos enjoy your day
So glad to hear it! ^_^
Huzzah! I really love your new meeples (Tapakapeeples?), the videos feel even more gloriously expressive now 😊. Echt gut gemacht, Alter! I love the German channel too, forgive me for not commenting on the mother-tongue version of this as well but while I can understand Wienerisch well enough, writing it is well beyond my C1 German skills 😅
My god.. I remember my grandma, who had a thing for putting flags on her car, putting this flag on her car (in austria). She got pulled over by a cop and they let her off with a warning.. Never thought I'd see a video on this topic in my life, that's crazy
That there's a law with an associated fine that everyone breaks but nobody ever gets punished for is probably deeply unsettling to Germans
I'm loving the use of voice acting 😂
I read the title as Australia, was so confused why an Austrian flag was banned in Australia
I love all the new characters in this video!
Yay! ^_^
Hi, Tapakapa. I love this video! Could you make a vexillological video explaining the terms "civil flag & civil ensign", "state flag & state ensign", and "war flag & naval ensign"?
Throw in naval jack while you're at it
Would be too dry for most people on its own, but maybe with the right base example it might work.
It might also have been done before. There are a lot of channels that talk about flags.
Also I didn't even notice your accent until you said you were Austrian.
even in the Olympics the state flag was shown on tv by NBC!
I have always had a love for the design of the austrian eagle.
Finland also has a different state flag to the civil flag. There is also a separate presidential flag.
i'd use it since it looks better, having an awesome eagle instead of some boring lines
What exactly IS legal in Austria, other than denouncing their ancestors?
I have been collecting flags of countries I have travelled to solo, and it bugs me how difficult it is to find the civil flag of Austria in every single souvenir shop (well, mainly in Vienna and Salzburg). Every one of them used the flag with the coat of arms, which kind of gave me the impression that, well, I am not sure if I should be buying that to display in my flag collection. Ended up caving and bought the state flag, but bearing in mind I needed to treat it with more respect / caution
Germany: "urgh, look at those unruly rebels"
I'm 50/50 Polish & Austrian and in the ojczyzna🇵🇱 the Polish flag with the coat of arms is only flown at embassies, consulates and by the vast majority of the Polish diaspora. This is partly to avoid confusion with other identical flags like Oberösterreich, Tirol & Südtirol.
Serbia has the same situation where our state (official) flag has a coat of arms on it and is used internationally, while the civil flag only has the red, blue and white tricolor.
2:58 Yeeeaaaah, but it looks so cool though…
I want iiiiiiiittt
My science teacher had this flag in his classroom. No clue why…
Well I guess the science teacher having one is better than the art teacher...
Overwatch and Call of Duty use the state flag, that's a bit bizzare
i had no idea the eagle had a hammer and sickle
i didn’t either, is it related to socialism or a coincidence?
The symbols of hammer, sickle and the mural crown embellishing the eagle's head represent peasantry, workers and bourgeoisie. The golden sickle and the golden hammer were introduced onto the eagle in 1919 during the First Austrian Republic.
The hammer and sickle are symbolic for farmers and workers and the peasantry.
Only now realised Austrian state flag has a HAMMER and a SICKLE 🤯

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was banned because the Soviets put that as the flag of occupied Austria.
