I went to Japan in 2018 when I only knew a little bit of Japanese. When I got to one of the hotels, I checked in and paid using my limited Japanese. I think the receptionist then thought I was fluent because she started talking and talking and talking. I had no idea what she was saying, so I just smiled and nodded!

I took the wrong bus in Japan and ended up across town at midnight. It was the last bus so I couldn’t get home, and my phone was almost dead. I ended up at a police box (nobody was there) and called the non-emergency number. I was crying and used my best Japanese to explain the situation. The lady on the line was so sweet. About 15 min later 2 police cruisers and 2 motorbikes pulled up and 6 Japanese policemen waltzed into the police station. I think they all got the call and since nothing was going on and they were all bored they came to see what was happening 🤧 it was so embarrassing. I asked them if they could help me call a taxi but they ended up giving me a ride in the police car to where I needed to go.

I studied English for about 10 years and I wanted to start studying japanese since I was 8 because of a childhood friend, but it's pretty difficult finding someone that teaches japanese for beginners, so I'm happy I found you. I can practice my english wile I learn a new lenguage :D
I'm brasilian by the way, so I never had the experience of talking to natives of both of the languages

It's great to listen to story about a place and things I know, but in Japanese :D. Although, I had to rely on subtitles, I can't wait to rewatch again, when I finally understand :D. I am from Czech Republic! And I also live in a city where we have alot of shops with trdelníky. When I was smaller, I tried trdelník with ice cream and since it was also a hot summer day, the ice cream dripped all over me. And then out of nowhere a few wasps started to sit one me and eat the ice cream off of me. I rember being super scared. I still laugh about it to this day. I love your podcast and I like to listen to it ,to practice my japanese.

In exchange for Tanaka-san sharing her embarrassing memory when travelling, I would also share my embarrassing memory when I visited Japan a few years ago. So it was my first time in Japan, I was riding the underground train with my mom and dad. The train wasn't very crowded, but all the seats were full, despite that I happened to be lucky to get a seat. Then an elderly man entered the train, he was alone and there were no seats left. I happened to be in front of him, so I get out of my seat and offered him mine. He kept refusing and avoiding eye contact, but me being a KY just thought he was doing that to be polite. He then just left to go to another carriage. I kinda feel bad but don't know what made him upset. After that, my mom pulled me aside and tell me that I might hurt his pride because I was a girl offering him a seat, and it might make him feel weak. I was shocked and felt really bad because maybe I make him feel embarrassed, while also embarrassing myself as a foreigner. I don't know if that is really what the old Japanese men think but this memory would still haunt me to this day.
Also still in Japan, and also in the station somewhat, I ran out of train tickets so I needed to buy the ticket pass. At this time I know a little bit of Japanese from watching anime/music, but just the basics. In curiosity, I tried talking to the person selling the ticket in Japanese, that I wanna buy the ticket. He replied to me in Japanese, but I had no idea what he means because he was saying words that I don't know. I know how to ask for something but that was the extent of my knowledge. Obviously, I don't know how to respond and just stutter nervously. I think he got the note that I can't actually speak Japanese and replied to me in a more understandable way.

I lived in Japan for a year and did the same thing several times. Offer my seat to the elderly, I mean. The old men would always stay standing and the seat would remain empty 😂 don’t be embarrassed. I pinkie promise you they literally don’t care. Especially if you’re a foreigner. Whoever you offered your seat to wasn’t offended and their pride wasn’t hurt. Rather, he just refused because it’s the polite thing to do and he didn’t want to trouble you. Don’t let it haunt you!

    プラハから、おはよう🖐️。Trdelník は美味しいですけど、食べるの方は難しいです。ちなみに、プラハ人はTrdelník店が嫌いかもしれないです。TrdelníkよりKoláček ほうがおすすます。
Thank you for the listening practice 😊. What I wanted to say in that broken Japanese above is that, Trdelník is tasty, but it is not traditional czech food, despite the advertisement. Many Czechs think it is a tourist trap. 🤔 Personally, I would recommend Koláček or Tvarohová buchta. Less messy to eat and it is the dessert, that our grandmas perfected and served for special occasions.

On my first visit to Japan, I would sometimes stop at a bakery to buy pastry on the way home. Once I was in the shop, one of the employees asked me if I was ready to order and I just mumbled 少々お待ちください.
The funny thing is that I knew that this was not the way I should have replied, as it is a polite form that the employees would use towards a client, and not the other way around, so I don’t know why I said that. But I can still see the faces of the two young female employees covering their mouth with their hand, trying hard to suppress a giggle.

thanks a lot for your videos Tanaka-san. I really love your voice and it makes me easier to learn Japanese. I just want to see all your videos and repeat them until I completely understand the content without watching the script. Again, thank you for your series, and I'm so in love with your channel!!

I once used the reflection of a car window to help me pop a zit…then I noticed two eyes starring at me. It was a young teenaged boy sitting in the car. 😂

PS: I love Trdelník, but never had ate it with chocolate. Just with sugar and cinnamon, like in old times. :)

When I was in elementary, I accidentally had toilet paper suck in my underpants when coming out from the washroom. Walked all the way to my classroom before the teacher yelled the information across the classroom, allowing all my classmates to turn and stare at the paper trailing out of my pants like a white flat tail.
