KTM EXC TPI Problems: Engine Blow Up, Running Backwards & More

- These are the problems I had, I'm not saying that ktm tpi is bad motorcycle, far from it. Each motorcycle has its own advantages and disadvantages, including the KTM TPI, I honestly prefer the latest model 2017 KTM with a carburator. It's not a problem for me to adjustthe carburetor for temperature and altitude height, because I don't often change the locations where I ride anyway, and I don't have big mountains nearby to ride on. So the carburetor is perfect for me. Certainly TPI has an advantage who often changes the place where he drives. I had a couple of bad experiences, and I was most disappointed because I didn't get good help from KTM and I have to solve all my problems myself. In this video you can see where my KTM TPI goes into reverse, where my engine broke, where it loses power and works strange

I really like the reverse on mine especially when I'm going down a trail and it ends I can backup without doing a pivot turn Really comes in handy for me
haha
😂
That's Way I go to Rieju MR and Beta RR without oil Pump 🤷🏻♂️
Beta ist the badest.
Rieju 300 MR PRO 🔝🔝
Kept my oil injection. Same spark plug after 1000 miles.
Good Video,
You do so much for this Sport 👍
Thank you for the warnings of those KTMs.
I had a 2020 Husqvarna TE150i and it constantly was blowing spark plugs and running weird - sold it and bought a carb TM Racing EN300ES 2 stroke, and haven't looked back...then bought a Honda CRF450R that I've built into a CRF450RX and both of these bikes have been my favorite to date out of owning Yamaha, Suzuki, and Husqvarna beforehand...quality, feel, and fun factor supercede all other machines I've owned and tried for my riding style.
I was about to buy the 2023 250tpi.
No chance!
I was going to buy a 2023 KTM 300 EFI. I didn't because of your video. I found a 2013 KTM 300. It needs some work but it runs great. This should be the last dirt bike I need to buy.
That's why I got a tm en300es carby. And put a smart carb on it.
Kyb forks are amazing and always have been 👍 great video and hopefully the snow will leave and you can get back out riding.
I have always used pre mixed oil and gasoline. Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, I never used the oil pump. I never known any track rider which used it. Pre mix only. It never fails.
I'd like a reserve gear in my Husky in some situations. About the autolub, no problem yet
100 hours on my 22 xc and its been awesome. Just tested the oil pump and it is working as good as new. I wont be replacing the oil pump anytime soon.
But when you do you’ll be replacing more than just the oil pump 🤣
@@gpaull2 just pulled the piston and cylinder and it looks great. thanks though
@@davidsalinas6084 how do you test it?
I believe every word you said and I started Racing KTM’s in 1990 and the bike would bust a piston about every six weeks but KTM was still a small company, so they were pretty good about helping me out with some parts. But I have a KTM 790 and it is a piece of junk .At 2000 miles the oil jet that lubricates the clutch stopped up and destroyed the clutch ( they put to much Loctite on the oil jet bolt and it stopped up the jet) and at 3400 miles ( which is what mileage I have on the bike right now) I had to put new cams in the bike and it cost me $1800 and KTM would not help me at all, even though I’ve had 30 KTM’s they could care less The bike set at the dealership for 6 months waiting on a intake cam. (/From July 2022 till January 2023) The Internet is full of other 790 owners with the same problem. The difference is they warranty their bikes and although mine had 3400 miles on it, they would not help me one bit even though I have been a customer since the year, 1990 and have owned 30 KTM motorcycles. So knowing from experience, I believe everything you said, and I believe KTM did nothing to help just like they did me because KTM is a big company now and they don’t care.
Been riding for 30yrs,owned most bikes including ktm 450sx a current bike,i will never buy a bike with injection and a oil pump, premix and carb is the only way which is why i bought a sherco 300 factory, best bike iv ever owned other than my 92 rm250
Thinking about buying a 2023 ktm 250 SX-F but after watching this video I might take another approach
I am fully agree I was ready for the 250 exc 6 days but I keep hearing issues about TPI and broken motor that KTM’is refusing to fix under warranty even on a 5 hou4s bike😢
I have a 2018 husky te 250 Tpi , with extreme map, over 300 hours, and i can't get rid of the deceleration popping, i play with idle screw and air bypass screw. Now i have 1 turn on the air bypass screw, and set the idle with the idle screw.
Why don’t you ride with studded/spike tires during the winter like we do in Sweden?
First of all. U can ride in snow. It’s beautiful and fun. Second, Some have problems, some don’t. But It’s very strange. I had a 300 2018 and it was totally fine. We all ride tpi’s. The tpi system is better in every way. It’s the future. If ktm doesn’t do that, there would be no two stroke anymore. The thing with the cylinderhead is a marketing failure. It happens often in company’s, because they want to safe money in every way, but it’s not good to ruin the quality. Also the guarantee that ktm gives u is 2 years, if it’s street legal. Of course it’s stupid and everyone would be pissed, if their bike broke.. but the law lets them do it. Overall it’s very good that you show your opinion and show their mistake’s so they can improve👌🏼
maybe you can do a wideo how you worm up your bike and you before training @The Dirtbike Rider
I've had 6 KTMs over the past 4 years. All have been great. Although, all but 1 are 4-stroke. Love their products. But the way they've treated you is crap. I've heard good and bad experiences with KTM corporate and warranty coverage. Most of the time the owner was able to apply enough pressure on the dealer to get things fixed for free or at a great discount. I hope KTM doesn't just choose ignore their customers in small markets like your country.
I bought the 2023 husqvarna tx 300 tbi so I don't have to worry about oil pump 😅
It's not premix anymore?
Davvero grandi, mai affrontato percorsi simili, eppure ho passato la vita nei boschi in moto!!! 😮🤩👍👍👍
Wondering if it was a faulty sprag clutch causing it to reverse.
Hey Bro,
I'd say KTM owes you. KTM ripped you off. Shame on them. Based on your experiences, I'd never buy a KTM.
Is the problem with the piston only in the 2023 model or also in the 2020 - 2022 model?
100hours on my 2020 exc just PERFECT
i bought a brand new Ktm exc 2022 tpi i have 1.3 hours on it. I hope i won't have problems
@@botezatuexty5868 update 130 hours, still no problem, i've used so much in high rev but still perfect
Yes Tpi is bullshit!! Golden carburator!
Tbi looks a really good option on my opinion
Hey! Very cool videos! We also have winter and snow now, we can’t ride =(. Here’s an idea for you, make a video about the KYB fork with a closed cartridge in comparison with the WP. I want to understand the difference in detail.
KTM should definitely sort it this is a joke a was going to buy one but maybe not now
Vrati se ti karburatoru, jednostavno nije za 2t tpi, suviše je to osetljiva tehnologija.
Only problem with my 22 ktm 250xc is the ride always has end ! I let it warm up properly so right matinence bike runs like a top !!
i bought a brand new Ktm exc 2022 tpi i have 1.3 hours on it. I hope i won't have problems
@user-fz8fy4zl1c hello, i had to change the Cilinder and piston at 80 hours (2 months ago) and i didn't even pushed it that much (maybe a bit) but I prefer a Yz250f 2023 or 2024 rather than the exc 150 tpi 2022
@user-fz8fy4zl1c btw I am botezatuexty5868
Thanks for sharing the information
I have its sister bike in the Husky te300i.
Love it but am way more confident in my Honda CRFs.
Plus ride red and get ...
😁
Does gasgas count 😂
For KTM300 Im choosing 2017-2019 carbed. Or 2 stroke with kicker and carb .. but best the under the motor estart and kicker bikes like Beta 2t with oil injection removed
Would you rather buy a new Bike, knowing they have these issues, or just stick with a old one ? I onw myself a 2012 exc 250 with around 450h and it just runs fine. Some of my friends have a Brand new GasGas, or 2019 Ktm exc 300. The only thing that annoys me sometimes is that i only have a Kicksart and you need Premix.
What is your opinion on older Bikes ?
I saw my friend put e start on his 2006 250exc. If u still love ur old bike. Why dont u make one. Premix is fine. Im remove oil pump on my old bike few month ago!!
That's because they buy good copper junk from Taiwan instead of solid elko cylinders and pistons
2:10 it happened the same to me and i had to change the piston and cilinder smh
my 2023 erzberg 300 tpi blew up at 5.2 hours 6 days after 30 day warrenty expired.
What ! You can't drive because it's Snowing! You must be joking 😂
i bought a brand new Ktm exc 2022 tpi i have 1.3 hours on it. I hope i won't have problems
Remove the oil pump..
The KTM 150 tpi 2023 have the new cylinder Kymco too ?
i dont know, cant confirm that
Is it just KTM I ride a 2022 Husky te250tpi
are they different Pistons
What was the problem with the bike at 5:00. Got a bike doing the exact same thing
looking at this video about an hour after my tpi blew up😂
not an oil pump faliure and nothing fell apart or at least i hope so my biggest concern are the rings the piston is in one piece
Hours?
Do you know Husqvarna has the same problem?
I have problems whit my oil Pump on my beta 300 my bearings Start make some noise, só i Change the bearings and remove my oil Pump and make a 40:1 pré mix😂
40:1 to much oil for hard enduro
@@nelsonmarcarvalho don't blow. make more smoke but isn't a problem to me 😂
Beta recommends 50:1 on rr
God what a nightmare I feel sorry for you 🙁
👍
Go TM racing or Beta or Sherco
you can use around 2500 to convert one to Electric which will last for years, need not to pay for new bikes that keep breaking
At the cost of range, power, the fact that your range gets worse each time you recharge and needing a generator/battery pack when you're away from civilisation eg. camping.
Wait until you need to replace the battery pack in a few years. Let us know what you think about electric bikes after you see how much that costs.
But Kyle on the Dirt Bike Channel says that anyone that says that TPI isn’t perfect is lying!?!? Maybe you should buy a new bike after a few tanks of gas like he does. 😂
Yeah that's the problem he doesn't keep them long enough to have a problem with them. I'll keep my carbed 18' tx300 thank you.
Sherco 300 factory rules
TPI (VS) SNOW!!! 🤐🤐🤐
KTM EXC 300 TPI 2018
Running bad is a simple problem of the switch off!
OEM switch!
👍👍👍👍
it really is poor honestly, if they where working out a fix you know they know they f#cked up and it was more then you with this issue !
Best Replacement Piston for the 300s?
@user-fz8fy4zl1c i swapped out my Oem for a Wossner. Brand new bike only Started 2X.

My opinion on oil pump is take them of and premix the fuel in the tank, your engine will last lot longer, and i am a carburetor guy think efi on 2T still needs a cuple of years of reengeniring just where the injector sits and how a 2t engine works,
I’ve always had ktms with no problems, but I’m shocked tpi are clearly unreliable . 🙄
“White power forks” 😂
Search on Google, What does WP forks stand for? You will be Shocked
@@TheDirtbikeRider that’s crazy, I guess it’s why you only see the letters all the time. Lmao
Your video is a big lie! You said you were not going to bad mouth KTM. Seems your commentary is computer generated . What a bad video!!!! Shame on you. You are cheating everyone who watches this video.
Why are you talking like a robot???
Haha snowing and not being able to ride? Buy some studs
KTM would not become better, the only want to have more money!!!
I cant take this guy seriously
KTM are beautyfull machines, but I prefer to by a Rieju....cheaper and also a good bike. I make just 20 hour whit it, we will see....
Great video with some interesting thoughts, keep them coming, However, you missed the obvious most common problem, the CCP sensor which is responsible for a lot of the bogging and poor running on the TPI, I'm on my 5th sensor in 2.5 years !!
Next, I'm sick of hearing this crap about oil pumps, and the narrative that their going to fail at some point...B.S, oil pumps have been around on 2T's in scooters, snowmobiles etc, since the 50's, the failure rate with oils pumps is so negligible, its not worth even talking about !!. If you want a bike with NO technology, go buy a 70's YZ 250 and see if you like that ?? ..OH BTW I used to race one and they were notoriously unreliable !! good luck
Wr450f it is then. F__K KTM
