    Buckeye Ballistics happened to put out a video very similar today comparing the Hornady Critical Defense and Speer Gold Dot in a 3" revolver, very much coincidence as we never planned a collaboration. What is very cool is he used organic gelatin, so seeing those results contrasted to mine is cool to see. ruclips.net/video/QqH814e6Qks/видео.html&t

    It’s a shame Ruger didn’t manage more than 6 rounds in their lcr 22 mags.

      I'm sure they could have done 8 like Taurus or even 7 like S&W. That being said, i'm okay with 6 shots. For defense a .22 WMR isn't great, one might say well then you need all the capacity you can get....but i'm not sure a couple more would make any real difference lol

      S&W also only put 7 into their j frames instead of 8 like in 22lr.

      @@AK-ky3ou If I had to take a guess I might say that because the design of their 6 shot .327 worked, maybe they found that something in the design worked for 6 shots of .22 WMR without having to alter something.

      100% agreed. I'd rather have the 2" LCR in 327 Federal magnum for the same weight and capacity. 8 rounds would have been a different story...

    I mention the SIlvertip .22 WMR being the same as the SuperX, and I just happened to have tested both of those rounds two times each from this 3" revolver, so here are my results, and I will just share plain gel results to be concise with this comment. Also neither ammo type in any of these four tests got any expansion of the hollow point, so I will just share velocity, energy and gel penetration -
    Winchester SuperX 40 gr SJHP test one= 1,336 FPS Average/158 FPE and penetration of 28". Winchester SuperX 40 gr SJHP test two= 1,360 FPS Average/164 FPE and penetration of 28.75"
    Winchester Silvertip 40 gr SJHP test one= 1,318 FPS Average/154 FPE and penetration of 29". Winchester Silvertip 40 gr SJHP test two= 1,297 FPS Average/149 FPE and penetration of 27.5"
    The SuperX average of these two tests is 1,348 FPS/161 FPE and 28.375" penetration. The Silvertip average of these two tests is 1,308 FPS/152 FPE and penetration of 28.25"
    The difference in energy between the SuperX and Silvertip is NINE (9) ft lbs energy, and the difference in average penetration is 1/8th of an inch. I think overall this evidence is compelling that Winchester is spending more time on marketing than defensive ammunition production.
    The only difference I can tell other than the packaging is that the Silvertip bullet has a slight silver hue on the bullet's copper portion, and that where I shop the Winchester SuperX 50 round box costs $15.77 while the Winchester Silvertip 50 round box costs $21.99.
    Winchester, shame on you.

    Love it! The 3" LCR barrel definitely gets more out of the 22 WMR than my 2" NAA. I did find the bare gel expansion failure of the Punch odd considering the results I've gotten with it, but over all, this is a very important contribution to the science of ballistic performance. Thanks Gun Sam!

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 месяцев назад +1

      I got good results with it before as well, but the last two times I tested it, it did bad. First test was a 'short' and it expanded big but the velocity was much higher. Last two boxes, same revolver and slower velocities, no expansion.

      I've noticed the LCRx has a weird design how the hammer spur is setup. Runs kind of weird. The centerfire ones definitely have a smoother trigger pull and the double action only version is even smoother than that.

    Due to a hand injury I was limited to shoot light recoil handguns for a year and a half. I therefore carried a Ruger Single Six in .22 Magnum with a 6.5" Barrel. Charts indicated that the MV would be in excess of 1400 fps. I practiced only head shots since even if an assailant is behind cover he will need to expose his head to return fire with any degree of accuracy.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 месяцев назад +4

      I had the Single Six in the 4 and 5/8" barrel about 15 years ago. It was no Heritage Rough Rider, that's for sure. It was super solid. One thing I remember was shooting fence posts with .22 LR and they stopped the bullets, but with the .22 WMR cylinder and ammo, they went clean through them. I honestly think any hit with a .22 Mag could put a man down.

    While I'm not advocating making any .22 WMR firearm an EDC, I understand why some folks choose to do so. I think this was a good comparison between those three cartridges since they were done back to back to back like that. For some reason, in my area, the Federal Punch is unobtanium while the other two are usually readily available. And after other YT videos, I thought I was being left out of the newest wonder cartridge because of that. Glad to see that the Critical Defense and Gold Dot performed well in comparison to the Federal Punch.

      Thanks. I am very picky about used gel blocks. I very rarely shoot into one not remelted. Once in awhile my secondary block will have a track in it as I sometimes film two videos in one day, take 2 good blocks, one older one for the backup block. When I get overpenetration in video 1, I have to just setup that secondary block again.

    I always pick up something from your opining. You've mentioned before the difference in bullet quality between .22lr and .22 wmr before, but today it kinda sunk in. I had been keeping .22lr in my NAA black widow because since it does almost as well ballistic wise at the 2" barrel length. I'm now convinced to switch back even with the less efficient lack of powder burn, etc. I'm always glad to see Hornady do well as I've always found it really accurate in any caliber and I bought a ton of it before the Federal Punch existed. Then for a year I could not acquire another box, and when I did - the new box is what we saw in this full length test and the velocity was too slow compared to the older box. ruclips.net/user/shorts8N0m7NzeLGI

      22 Magnum Federal Punch is a segmented JHP and designed to expand. I've gotten better expansion with organic gel. I do think Federal Punch is the best all-around 22 WMR defensive handgun load, but this test shows Critical Defense is better. All these tests add to the science. This is great. Another win for the Critical Defense is that it runs smooth and reliably in my PMR 30 and gives me about that same speed you're getting (1200 fps) with really nice accuracy at 25 yards. Honestly I'll take 30 rounds of that per mag that I can deliver at a high rate of speed without really losing my target vs any 15 rounds of center-fire while trying to deal with recentering my sights to my target after each shot due to recoil.

      From what I have seen in older data, the .22 WMR seems effective at 40% chance of stopping a threat from a handgun and modern gel testing shows good penetration. The .32 ACP is a tad higher in the data at over 50%, but this was 30 year old data where the .32 ACP is a Silvertip and the .22 WMR is old school rifle ammo. I would guess .32 ACP and .22 WMR from handguns are similar for self defense now days.

      The Ruger GP100 in .22 LR is a 10 shot revolver. But that's your answer. A cylinder that big, fits a revolver that is sort of dumb in a sense. Like if it were a S&W, it would be an L or N frame revolver which no one wants. To be in a normal size revolver it's limited to 9 of .22 LR or 8 or .22 Mag.
