  • Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt and Bill Pullman star alongside Betty White in a thriller/comedy about a croc in Maine. A paleontologist investigates wild animal attacks in this fun 1999 movie that may not be "great" but is a fun time. Stan Winston's animatronics are also really cool!

Man, the 90s really was a 'golden era' of 'animal attack'-themed creature features, and this is _definitely_ an entertaining, funny, and even suspenseful romp for me (😊). The crocodile itself and the late, great Betty White are easily best parts IMHO.

Betty White's character is easily the best of the movie. I love how misanthropic she's, and the care and love she shows for the crocodile. My favorite crocodile movie however is Primeval (2007), it's ending is far more satisfying for those who like animals.

The stand out performance in the movie came from Betty White. Her foul-mouthed cookie-baking vengeful grannie was HILARIOUS!!!!! Always think of deinosuchus when I think of the croc in this movie, it's about the size of what the real-life animal would have been. Never seen Anaconda but that snake just gives me titanoboa vibes. Just today learning they're in the same universe kind of makes me want them to be in the same universe as Jurassic Park/World, then maybe you can have an Ingen connection, I don't know lol.

I bet those ancient behemoth croc critters were an absolute force to be reckoned with! Most of the massive apex marine predators were ocean dwelling, so it's kinda unsettling there was something as large and ferocious that could hide in fresh water and go on land easily. Same can be said for Titanoboa, and the scary thing about that snake is one was spotted and photographed in the 50s I believe and there's been many accounts of them being seen in jungles through the years.. Makes you wonder what is still out there? 👀

Ok, you finally did this one. If there's any of the animal attack movies I truly remember and love, it's this one. Honestly, it's a simple premise movie that I don't think needed any real themes to it and I think the humor is fantastic, but I will mention that one of the jokes hit better for me then probably most people. It was the karate bit as at the time, I was only 10 or so and was in karate myself so Platt confidently stating he was a brown belt put me on my ass cause that rank color is on the low end the middle ranks, 10 year me could've beat him. Yes, Betty White KILLED in her scenes to the point I can't forget her lines and that top tier sass. I was still shocked we only got 2 human victims on screen with a 3rd only mentioned but the bear getting eaten was and still is one of my favorite animal attack scenes. The croc himself (both on screen and the animatronic) are amazingly done to the point they had blood squibs to simulate bullet impacts up close and it just truly looked real as could be, our beloved Stan Winston proving he is the patron saint of creature effects. I will say I think it was actually just long enough cause I never felt a feeling of "awww it's over already" I always felt very satisfied whenever I watch it to this day. Thanks for finally getting to this one, I'm actually eager to hear you speak on King Cobra cause I saw it only once but it's stuck in my head since then.
    Add. edit
I genuinely forgot to mention both the CGI and other croc movies compared to this.
The CGI was actually solid, I'm a creature movie buff and I've seen MUCH worse but also I think any issues actually help the product. The CGI gives the croc a sorta wet sheen which actually suits it cause.... it's CROCODILE, they spend lots of time in the water. So the CGI is actually fine by me.
    Other crocodile movies
Oh boy I've seen MANY of them, including all the mentioned ones. Crocodile was ok, that had bad CGI as well as lack of realism (the damn thing does a spinning arching leap in the air, kills the whole horror vibe) and Croc 2 was even worse, the animatronic in both is also kinda derpy. Rouge was a surprisingly good one but I dock points for more realism issues ONLY cause the story was partially based on a real croc that actually never killed anyone and they went too hard on the fake stuff. Black Water was ok, I can't say too much cause I only saw it once as it was a "I caught it channel surfing" moment. Primeval........ honestly, I think it's easily the worst I've seen because dear GOD do they have Gustave acting more like a horror slasher then an animal, especially full on sprinting across the savanna after the cameraman. Crocs CAN chase you but come on, that was too stupid even for B-Movie junkie me, both killed my suspension of disbelief and any seriousness/horror in the movie. It should be noted the real Gustave actually rarely ate human victims, often just killing them and leaving the bodies. The only point I give Primeval is that last kill, that was VERY memorable and a good image of what'd happen to anyone unlucky enough to have their head in a croc's mouth. Blood Surf was one you missed, pure B-movie cheese, gory but kinda meh, especially when the lead male has recurring "visions" and there's no mention of psychics soooooo it looks really out of tone. Crawl was also disappointing as well as Croc. I've also seen both Alligator movies too, the first was OK, the second meh. I've seen all the Lake Placid sequels............. yeah, the first one was the only good one.
Too many films just go "make the animal a slasher" route and it loses it's punch. Lake Placid, for what I can see, has the most realistic behaving crocodile in a movie: It killed the diver cause he was in his territory, it killed the cop cause it followed the hatchling sounds and reacted defensively, it tried to kill Hector when he was in the croc's personal area and only latched onto the heli not tried to pull it down, and it killed the old man cause he got in the way when the croc was already trying to prey on the horse so it was a horrible accident.
Lake Placid stands for me to be the best killer croc movie and easily the funniest but never pulls me from my suspension of disbelief like almost every other killer croc. Yes, they ARE movies but still, there's only so far I can believe it and watching what is supposed to be a "real" animal do things they can't (run for extended times, jump FAR too high, etc) just ruin the experience and turn it into B-movie cheese (at best) instead of Animal Attack Movie.

Like here's what I mean: People have said T2 Judgment day was the better than the first Terminator movie, now if the filmmakers would have taken extreme care and make a great T3 that outperforms the previous films, that would allow the flow of great installments to the franchise. So, if the second Lake Placid wasn't going to be better than the first movie, then they shouldn't have made it. It's not hard, you just need creative individuals working together to make a great sequel that would permit more sequels and not to mention, bigger production budgets.
So in short, if you plan on making sequels, then commit to making each one better than the last. The LP franchise is pretty lame, aside from the first movie, which I still love. A Lesson to future filmmakers, bless for the love of the Cinematic Gods, please stick to this lesson: if you're doing a franchise, make each film better than the previous, in story, effects, and overall performance. That and sticking to three films just to be safe. That way, you don't need to stress out about 11-20 movies better than the first three. Concentrate on making each of the sequel installments better than your first movie.

Edit: Crawl is a pretty cool modern creature feature too!

Unfortunately, I hate this movie. I wish I could love it, because I’m a sucker for creature features. Screenplay was just annoyingly terrible, which usually doesn’t bother me. But the action with the croc felt extremely weak and didn’t live up to its potential.
Rogue from 2007 I think is the best giant croc movie.

Yeah, I'm not big on this film either. It's trying to be both a killer animal horror movie with a jokey comedic tone in certain points and lacks any sense of danger. I much prefer Rogue, Black Water, Crawl (I know that ones with alligators) and even Primevil over Lake Placid.

I definitely rank this gem of a movie right at the top, but as for the best giant croc movie ever my candidate would have to be "Rogue". Terrifying animatronics from the guys who brought the dragons to life in "Komodo", taut pacing, tension you could cut with a knife. And not everyone has "kill me" immediately legible on their foreheads. That is nightmarish survival horror in the extreme.

This is still a favorite of mine. One of those movies that if I'm channel surfing...I have to stop and watch the rest of it. I really like the comedy between Platt and the sherriff. I agree also that two other movies that are actually better as serious movies is PRIMEVIL and ROGUE. Those two are better made and scarier in my opinion.

Lake Placid is nearly perfect. The story is straightforward. The characters are who they are and are clearly defined. The shots are beautiful. The soundtrack is good. The pacing is correct. The sheriff plays his role perfectly, being the butt of the jokes but never actually being diminished by them, he's very Zen.
The violence and the gore is intense, but it's not overdone.
Nobody persists on denying the fact that there's a crocodile once given evidence. The characters have friction but there's not really any conflict.
And, best of all, like Tremors or The Ghost and the Darkness, it's a monster movie where daylight does not mean that there's a respite from danger.
The movie's lack of broader meaning is one of its strengths: its pure. There's no evil. There's no significant mystery. There's no irrational caricature of a character creating drama for drama's sake. There is a clear, well defined problem with a simple, yet challenging solution, and whatever drama there happens to be is based on the approach to solving the problem, rather than trying to define the problem.
I've watched this movie start to finish over 20 times, at least. It is a well constructed, well executed story.
