#LakePlacid, a Steve Miner film about the search for a man-eating, thirty-foot crocodile in a lake in Maine.
Stan Winston and his crew realized Lake Placid’s crocodile as a full-size animatronic puppet - complete with moving head and tail and snapping jaws - that would function underwater. The crocodile was mechanized through hydraulics, which, as had been learned on previous projects, worked fairly well in a water environment, as long as they were protected in waterproof housings and surrounded by water-resistant skin.
“We went into this show with the full knowledge that water always wins,” said Richard Landon, who led the mechanical crocodile design. “That has become my personal motto: Water Always Wins. Water will always break something. Water is the universal solvent. Superglue breaks down in it. Urethane breaks down in it. Paint breaks down in it. Water is a nightmare - and we were in it for a full six months on this show.”

Stupid kool wow that rocks!!
The detail in this is incredible. I'm sure it was a lot easier for the actors to feel fear being in the water with this thing.
Yeah, I'd be pretty perturbed if I was in the water with a model of basically a dinosaur.
Animatronics can never be replaced by CGI. You can tell CGI right away and that destroys the illusion. Thats why films from the 90s still look good because all the actions were real.
Maximum Prank potential...
Maximum jailtime potential.

That would be a awesome plot twist, if it was in the end, of the movie!

Regardless of how you may feel about the film, you can't deny that a lot of genuine hard work and creativity went into bringing the film's 'star' here to life. 👍🏻

good
Yes
That is truly incredible and makes me want to watch the movie again. I always love animatronics over CGI!
We needed more of this in the sequels other then fake looking cgi
Totally agree
The sequels are so bad they're not even worth acknowledging.
Yes sr
I saw Lake Placid Legacy, it was very awful for fake cgi
Film Companies' Over reliance on CGI doesnt make them realize how fake some of it looks. They think that Practical effects like these are just 90s things.Duh some 90s movie monsters look way more realistic than todays CGI, ever seen the Trex from Jurassic Park 1,i hope they Realize that👌
Lake Placid is one of my favorites. In fact, all of my favorite movies had Stan Winston involved. There will never be another like him. Rest in peace Stan, we miss you.
Lake placid 2?
I wonder who got to keep the crocodile puppet.. Totally badass for a man cave or backyard.

Its crazy to think back in history there were actually crocodiles around this size.

This is what I miss this is the nuts and bolts of the film industry, the list goes on and on from my favorite film of all time Jaws, aliens, gremlins, even some elements of King Kong (1976) practical effects animatronics is what brought my love of film they'll always be a place for CGI but unfortunately this type of talent doesn't exist the ability to create a creature with precise realism my hats off great upload. I will forever enjoy animatronics and practical effects.
As cheesey as Lake Placid is I've always genuinely enjoyed it. I wish these making videos were longer. I love them.
Wow this is awesome well done Stan Winston School that looks crazy and just illustrates what a Deinosuchus sized crocodile looks like, ridiculously large!
That looks amazingly realistic... incredible work!

This thing should be made with a prank. You'll make the person shit in the water.
This movie introduced me to Betty White. Over 15 years ago, I was watching monster movies all the time. Lake Placid was one of them. Rest in peace, Betty. Thank you for being a friend, even to a bloodthirsty monster croc😊.
Forget pranking people.. i want to see this out in the wild !!🦓🐆🐅🦒🐘🦏🦛🐊🐊
right now this remarkable talents, efforts, and hardworking overwhelmed by a few people with computer
remember 1999 when the posters of a crocodile grabbing a helicopter caught my eyes, lake placid great movie 😍🙏
This movie was way better than the sequels and the spin-offs.
This animatronic and the animatronic for Rogue are in my opinion the best animatronics in the history of practical effects
Without CGI there will be a bunch of super creative intelligent people
This is absolutely stunning! Props to all who helped make this thing
Lake Placid is such an underrated movie. It's a lot more clever than you'd think.
Prefer stuff like this than cgi..it looks much more fun and interesting
This is awesome!!! It's so realistic!!! Seriously, the animatronics made by Stan Winston are always so realistic!!
Send it into a crocodile habitat!

1:50 raw footage like this can be so cool
This is incredible work.... artistry at its best
Man, it may be an animatronic robot, but that thing looks real enough to scare the scales off of smaller, REAL crocodiles, alligators, caymans, gavials..... oh, yeah! And people would get plenty nervous, too!
I saw the movie the croc looked real , awesome work
Even though I know that crocodile is fake I would still be terrified to go swim and then just seeing that crocodile just come up to me.
Even though lake placid is a B class horror movie in all of its glory, you can see a huge different between the first one and the sequels. In the 90's they put a lot of effort on cheaper horror movies too.
Good bless You STAN WINSTON.
Besides pranking people Id love to see it set in the Nile River or Australia to prank Crocks.. they would be shook at the site of its size
"1/5 scale maquettes" *is literally the size of the average American crocodile*
And too think their are probably a few LIVE CROCS that are this size...!!!
Cgi can't replace tangible props
Such a great build! I hope there is always a place for these real effects. Computers will always have their limits and just don't grab the imagination like these things do.
I assume this old croc deteriorated and was assimilated like the JP animatronic creatures were?
*Interior crocodile alligator. I drive a Chevrolet movie theater.*

the best in fx and real model work.
Modern monster movies need this!!
I wish movies used more practical effects this is awesome
I used to wonder if Killer Croc (Arkham Series) should have a pet in a future live action Batman movie

One of Betty White's best movies, too.
"If I had a dick, this is where I would tell you to suck it." XD

Very cool. Loved the movie. Kudos to the amazingly talented crew!!!
Reasons to just how you can't out do the first film compared to almost any movie's franchises. Because it isn't 100% visual effects. Its artwork, made by the power of teamwork!
1:39 “I am crocodile” made me laugh way too hard
Is that the Lake Placid from SyFy channel? Lol, but the animatronic is actually pretty good! No, it’s fantastic!!
First movie not from Syfy channel. It was theater movies. Lake Placid sequels on Syfy channel but they sucks for awful cgi. No more animatronic :(
Hats off there hard work
The saltwater crocodile are also known to become at least 20-25 feet. Now that's a real life monster you don't want to meet
On of the best things i have ever seen
Now i want a 30 foot animqtronic crocodile
Imagine putting this in an actual river with Nile Crocodiles, that do make a nice documentary.
Astonishing
It’s all fun and games
Till a real croc shows up.
I want to know what happens to these amazing pieces of art once the movie is over. Do they just sit in storage to rot? Do they trash them? Do they sell them to a private collector who takes good care of them?
• xραѕтєllιє • too expensive to store usually. Unless the studio expects their to be a sequel, the hardware is stripped out, maybe parts are taken as a memento and the rest is trashed
@@MozTS Sadly, yes, that's true. I've seen tank replica prop that's built on caterpillar bulldozer left to rust somewhere.

They ve spent alot of time good job guys from somalia
By capturing the screen, someone then make a hoax news, "30 feet croc eating men, captured by fishermen"
Oh to think of what Stan could have done with the Mechanical shark in Jaws.
😨😨😨Croc ... Croc ... Croc ... Croc ... Croc ... Croc ...... ¡¡¡CROCODILE!!!😱😱😱

I mean, I watched this movie this week and I discovered it has one of the best "special effects" I have ever seen!!! The crocodile looks so real and awesome!!! And you have to take into consideration that it was 20 years ago 💚

The crocodile from Rogue: am I a joke to you?
Looks like an ad for craft work shop
It’s amazing.
Just imagine to see a croc that big. The more if you capture it.
The movie's fun & okay overall.
But, with this level of quality to the animatronic croc, they should've made a Jaws-level of a movie.
Hahaha they spent so much time on the effects in the first one by the time the sequel came about it was like “nah mate can’t be fucked, we’ll use PS1 graphics
Crazy they going one that size
Wtf. That's too realistic
Building a 30 foot animatronic Croc

Did anyone notice the Velociraptor and Pachycephalosaurus animatronics in the background?
Eagle eye! You can see the dinos from Steven Spielberg's The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Stan Winston Studio made them for the 2nd movie, and they made the dinos for the 1st and 3rd movies as well. Check out our related blogs here: bit.ly/JPDinosYT - Balázs
