      Undead Cupcake Hell yes, a filmmaker may be less restricted with what they can do with CGI, but it's the animatronics up close, that really sell the realistic quality needed to make the dinosaurs feel real.

      deraj nitram Yup, but sadly as the movie found out, you can ruin that certain realness that the animatronics bring by going over them with CGI. It happened in the prequel for The Thing. They had some truly awesome and creepy animatronics, but they then cgi-ed over them giving enough disconnect to take away the unnerving factor the raw animatronics had.

      That's a misconception. CGI can be incredibly expensive! You'd be surprised just how many people and man hours goes into believable CGI. So it's not fair to say that practical effects aren't used more because they're expensive. The real reason is that producers don't believe that they're believable, which of course, is wrong.

    5:12 How come the puppet looks way more realistic here than in the movie? maybe because of that awful blue filter that they used in the film and diminished the original color of the skin?

    • @Dinobot2468
      @Dinobot2468 9 лет назад +72

      J Jo Its the way they raise the contrast and add a blue colour tint. This makes it easier for the brain to detect whats real or not. This is also why people are thinking the CGI looks more fake in some scenes, even though the actual models are much more detailed. Makes me wonder why they went with this look.

    • @flightlesscoffeebirdboy9655
      @flightlesscoffeebirdboy9655 9 лет назад +10

    • @TimothyWilmots
      @TimothyWilmots 9 лет назад +5

      Filipe de Lima Santos From what i know they didn't use a color filter in JP, this JW looked fake from start to end to me, and this animatronic scene looked very bad in the movie. I just saw a fake looking puppet while in this video i am amazed at how complex it actually was. I guess that in JP the animatronic know how was at it's peak, and a big part of it got lost when CGI started replacing it.

      It wasn't that. I know they tightened her skin and added scars (from the raptor attack in Jurassic Park) but her head/body shape look different. It kinda looks like the Papo Running T-Rex (look it up and compare it a Jurassic Park T-Rex maquette) which is based on the V-Rex from King Kong. Also compare the very last scene in Jurassic World with the "Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth" scene from Jurassic Park. I can't deny that apatosaurus scene was amazing, the seamless blend between CGI and Animatronic are beautiful, thats what this age of film needed. I guess if the director explore this technique more or even used it more (not relying too much on CGI, more on practical), we can have a masterpiece of a movie, well visually. CGI for complicated movement, Animatronic to react with the actor, hey, I guess its pretty Much what they had done for the first Jurassic Park lol. Also, I think the scene would look better without that "blue" color grading, I think nature and animal scene need natural color grading (looks just the way our eyes see), but thats nitpicking o course. Good job you guys at Legacy Effect!

Although i was a little sad that it's the only animatronic dinosaur on screen, i was stunned the first seconds i saw it. All the subtleties in the movement and the animation itself were simply incredible. Hands down, this whole scene is the most moving dinosaur-scene i've seen since the ill-triceratops in Jurassic Park. Thank you so much Legacy Effects!

      TheMetfan81 The contracted the original T-Rex pupil without CGI, not to mention they did the same thing on Jabba the Hutt. This is clearly do-able, it's a matter of laziness on the studio's behalf. I believe Treverrow wanted more and the studio didn't give him the time or money for it. Or possibly he took the easy way out, but I'm not sure.

      Anirudh Menon Hating CGI is not a hipster trend. What made the first movie great was that it relied more on its story, and when it had dinosaurs, 90% of the time the dinosaurs were practical. Movies now are all about action and the fantastical because it's so easy to make. There aren't many big movies that aren't just full blown CGI because we're used to seeing shit like Transformers or San Andreas or, now, Jurassic World.

      Joseph Boulter My biggest gripe with CGI is the actors having to act in front of green screens, they have nothing to interact with, nothing to feed them emotion, that's why big Hollywood movies suck. Notice in this clip the actors react to the Apatosaurus moving because it's a real object that they can touch and feel. You can't do that with CGI. That's why actors always have this stupid blank look on their face when they're acting with CGI.

    • @Little1Cave
      @Little1Cave 9 лет назад +6

      Honestly, I don't hate CGI, and I don't a lot of people who gripe about this movie do either. I LOVE what CGI can do. There are some things that CGI can do that animatronics can't, at least realistically (that scene with the Pterodons attacking citizens is a great example). The problem that many people have is that we're far too reliant on it. There are some things that CGI, at least right now in the 2010s, can't get across the same way a physical creation could. CGI can very easily date a film unless it's used VERY effectively (like in Jurassic Park or Gravity). I believe they made the right choice to create an Apatosaurus head with a CGI body (though color correction has been unfairly abused and overused in this movie as well -_-). However the opening with the Velociraptor's hatching out of the eggs could've been done with simple animatronics as well. They did it in the first one and, heck, they could even improve it on top of that with modern robotic technology. To me, the CGI wasn't used that well in this film, which would've been fine if there wasn't as overused as much. When I think of Jurassic Park as a franchise, I think of awe-inspiring creations and the harmonious ballet between two different but effective methods of creating creatures that can not only terrify, but can gain admiration as well. And hey, maybe the fault IS in the color correction department and the effects were fine prior to that. I don't know. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the movie and I was super happy to see it. 8)

      Joseph Boulter I have to disagree man. I think CGI more often than not looks completely simulated and not real at all. I find motion in CGI can make or break how real it looks. I have to say though, CGI is absolutely astounding in small doses. My criticism is tends to be when directors use CGI for whole set-pieces and scenes.

    • @nyrangersfan6325
      @nyrangersfan6325 9 лет назад +2

      CGI doesn't look real. Practical Effects would always win! Look at Lord of the Rings vs The Hobbit. Lord of the Rings looked way more realistic because they used a lot more practical effects then the Hobbit that used mostly CGI. J.J. Abrams who is directed the new Star Wars movie is using more practical effects than CGI because of how fake CGI looks. CGI is a great tool, but you can't use it to much like these films tend to do now and days.

      DisneyNAW That's a tautology, because the Apatosaurus was a practical effect, as were the Raptor heads, only difference there was that they used CGI to make the eyes move and to show the animal breathing. Jurassic Park worked well because it had an equal mix of the two, so it was a lot harder to get used to the CG and animatronic effects. CG is very good and very convincing when used in moderation.
      But the problem is that so many movies rely on it now, that we've just gotten used to it and it's easier to tell apart what's CG and what's real.
      Movies desperately need to go back to practical effects. Not replace CG entirely, but also not rely on it.
