I did a newer model Escalade in the rain/snow tonight. Getting that spare off the cable was RIDICULOUS!!!! It was like a puzzle. I had to hold the whole thing up (heavy and wet and COLD) to get enough cable slack to get the flange to go through. Absolutely disgusting engineering on the new ones. I've helped hundreds of people with their spare tires. I know where most jacks/tools/spares are without a manual. The new design that's suposed to involve the jack and some "catch" that doesn't catch is an embarrassment to GM. I had to get the owners manual out and the hardware under the car worked nothing like the book described. It was way overcomplicated and failed to work properly.
Yeah same with mine when I needed it. The failsafe would not let loose. Luckily I keep a toolbox in my truck bed. Filed the steel cable off and unbolted the entire thing from the frame. Designed so well that you can't even get to it in a time of emergency.
Like they couldn't put it under the floor in the cargo area? Sheesh....
