Great tip! As much as I hate to admit it, at 67 I'm not as young as I used to be. You helped this old man out, and I really appreciate it. Thank you very much!!!
Thanks for the video, worked like a charm. Spent an hour fighting with the spare, owners manual and it did not budge. Came home, watched your video. Flat screwdriver and a hammer got it free. Now to cut that sucker off, my dirst and last fight with it. Thanks!
I wasn't even needing to use my spare, I was just changing out shocks and thought I'd drop the spare to inspect it and lube things up. Had no idea it would be such a hassle. BUT thank you NMT for helping us out!
So glad I found this video when I just need to service my spare and not when I'm on the side of the road in a foot of snow. That f-ing latch is getting greased now.
Thank you! Found your instructions and my husband got a stuck spare unstuck. The video made getting this "project" done faster then we thought possible.
Dude , THANK YOU for making this video!!! I just bought a 2007 Sierra. The owner said they never had to use the spare and given the rust I believe them. It worked great!! Thank you.
I spent 2 hours, then I looked on RUclips…. Your video is GREAT! It took me all of 5 minutes to get that tire down!!! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!
Life saver I had to limp my Tahoe home 24 miles on the wheel! Got it home about an hour later finally was able to get the wheel to drop after prying on it thanks bro!
I was doing a search on how to get my spare tire lowered, all I saw was the channel lock videos until I found your video. The only thing I had to do was use a floor jack with a block on it to hold the tire up on one end, I used the ratchet strap on the other end to hold the tire up. I gave you a one thumps up, I'd give you ten but you're only allowed one. Greatly appreciated, thanks.
I just wanted to say thank you. This is the only thing that worked. Of course it was pure luck that I had a ratchet strap and a screw driver in my truck. Thank you again.
I really appreciate how you described and showed what was going on with the screwdriver once you got the latch down. Makes it WAY easier having seen that, considering on the truck we're doing it blind.
Dunno if it works yet, but at least I can see the unseen mechanisms, thats a huge help, there's not alot out there on this very common problem. I've had trouble sleeping worrying about this issue . I intend on solving today even if it results in an acetylene torch! Thanks Rob! You have saved me and probably tens of thousands of others, Just with an explanation of how their CRAP works! I would submit a bill to GM for TSB authoring
This was awesome. I used a 2x4x3 foot board on top of an old scissors jack, instead of the strap. It was easier for me as a 60 yr old woman to get the tire stabilized. Great Video and many thanks
You are the man! If I would have seen this first, it would have saved me 2 hours of fiddling around trying to reach through the license plate hole. Found your video and had the tire on the ground in just a few minutes. Thank you!
Thank u for posting the final pic of the safety support. My wife, dogs and I were out on an afternoon drive in the woods and I inevitably ran into a stick and needed the rusted in spare
I spent an hour trying to get my tire down last Saturday with no luck. I wish I would have watched this video before I started. I will give this a try tomorrow. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I was very lucky as per the Manual I cranked it up tight a couple times and gave it 2 kicks and it released. I then got my grinder and ground off the secondary latch. A short length of pass-link chain and 3/8" SS bolt and nylock™ nut as a safety measure and done. There is a video of a guy who tried many things then chained it to a tree and calmly drove quickly forward. Job done!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Stuck on the side of the highway fighting that lock for awhile and your video saved me. Luckily I had a ratchet strap but no tools, the pry end of the lug wrench was able to fit up there and release it.
my husband was having so much trouble getting the secondary latch to release...he really liked your video, very good picture and easy to follow instructions...hope it saves someone else from the aggravation of trying to understand the owners manual instructions! Thanks, good job!
Very nice! I'm ready to take the spare off of my '05 to switch on of the other tires to the spare and then clean up the rusted wheel so I can put a new one on it and the truck. I spent 20 minutes trying to crank it down. then another 20 trying to jack it up. Nothing! Saw another video with a couple of girls using channel locks (favorite dumb comment on that one-"Oh yeah, be sure to get the kind (channel locks) that open back up by themselves!" What??) Anyway, watched yours next and tomorrow morning I will get out and try this method. Good job explaining what tiy did and the 'secret tricks' you discovered while doing it. This was another big help from youtube world. Good Job, NMT.
Great short video. After watching and trying other methods, with no luck, making me feel dumb with this simple task. Your video had best explanation and step by step walk through. I felt like you related with my same frustration at one time. Thank You.
Just wanted to leave a comment that you helped me out big time. My tire just blew today and my spare was stuck in the same way. I ended using the flat end of the tire iron to pop the latch loose. Thankfully, I always carry straps in the truck, because that helped a ton too.
Hey man thanks man great idea boy it sure makes it easy man mine was Rusty and stuck I've been kicking and screaming and I swear to God not even the mechanic could take the damn tire down thanks again it worked like magic
Thanks for the video, I'm glad I was able to do this in the driveway rather than on the road somewhere. Soaking the latch in rust remover for a few hours to see if it will loosen up enough , otherwise grinding the tang off seems like a good idea.
Struggle* curse*hammer*curse and curse some MORE! then watch your video and 10-15 later the spare was off! Thank YOU! You saved the day! Great suggestion!
Thank you for posting! Sprayed mine with Amsoil Metal Protector and used your screwdriver method and out it came. What a weird design and nothing I’ve seen in communication from GM that even touches on a usable remedy. Thanks again for the helpful post.
Blowout on the interstate today. Went to lower the spare and no bueno. Got a ride home on a flat bed and will fix it today with this information. Thanks!
Yea.....I'm in the process of fixing this piece of wonderful engineering with an angle grinder, before I do a 15 hour road trip this week. Fuck you GM.
me and my son were stuck between a freeway and a merger to get on different free way. had cars flying past 80mph 5 feet away from both sides of the tahoe was scary 3 different tow truck drivers couldn't get spare off... and none had tools with them ..
Done and done! Tried two other videos, this one was the one that showed the way to actually get it done. Now I have to clean it up and make sure it works in the future when I actually need to use it.
Good trick, slightly modified version for me worked, but principles were the same. Couldn't find my long flat head, so I used the jack extension and a hammer with a little PB blaster. After spending two hours of my morning battling it, this worked like a charm.
once I remove the spare the first time in my GMC, it will no longer live in that jungle gym, under the truck EVER! It will be one of several places, mostly in the bed which is rarely used, if I do need bed space it will be put in the back seat floor area, or lastly it will be in my garage temporarily till I get my shit together. video helped harden my resolve to never ever replace a spare tire to such a location. you made the best of it, you are a young man full of strength, patience, and physical ability; but that was pretty much a mess which I as an old fart, chose to manage differently. Glad I watched the video' Regards!
Thanks a ton, really, this was making me crazy. Got it down and used an angle grinder to eliminate the latch and fixed this forever, if I'm worried about the tire falling out I'll use a ratchet strap for security - you'd need one along anyway. And what's with the down votes?? Didn't think that many GM engineers were involved in this design effort :-O
Thank You very much!- Very clever - I was about to get the grinder but I wouldve screwed the rim - this is absolutely stupid - did they hire Ford engineers for this one - pointless - I wont put a spare back - no way I would be able to do this on the side of the road if I needed a spare
Secured tire with strap, ran cable down, tried releasing catch with screwdriver. Bad word, bad word, bad word. Reached in to remove rubber boot, released catch. Not rusted, slightly sticky, PP design. Emergency or tactical equipment should always work as specified when needed. Great video, definitely helpful.
Since I was in the driveway I used my 2 floor jacks to hold the spare in place. Worked great. I've put a strap in the truck bag for future use. Thanks for the help.
Thank you! I just bought a new "old" truck. After driving it for a month I decided to test the spare tire. Stuck! Gave up pretty fast then came in to watch this. Especially like how you showed the latch in great detail. Knowing how it works is half the battle! Gonna give this a whirl tonight.
Dude, thanks a ton for this video. Was stuck on the side of the highway, tire wouldn't drop... never used the crank before. What a fuckin fiasco on the side of the highway after a fuckin 10hr day doing impact windows. You're a life saver!
Helps a lot, blew a tire last night on my way home and couldnt get the spare off. Had to get my dad to break the spare off his suburban and use BBC that just to get home
Just ran into this issue last week. Watched a few videos and decided to try this one first. Worked good. Really like the strap idea. Glad this happened at home while showing my boy how to take the spare down and not on the roadway. Only thing that i think I will change is instead of relying on WD40, I will probably cut the secondary off the cable altogether. Would buy a properly built aftermarket unit but it was $300 and that is more then the old truck is worth.
Unbelievable! I guess after all these decades of rusty Chevrolets, The engineers thought nature and salted roads had given them a free pass! They would have better off to put a mount through the passenger seat and called it a day! Wait til you have to do a heater core in yours, the spare tire issue is a breeze by comparison!
Dave Williams lmao like fords and dodges don't do the same. Every truck from up north I've ever seen has been a rusted out piece of junk

Oh come on and read the manual! LOL.... Mine states to release it every month for inspection and to lube the mechanism. I mean who doesn't have time for that...lol. I just spray it down with PB Blaster every few months and take the spare off in the spring and fall to inspect it. I have had 3 Trailblazers now and this keeps you from having this issue when the spare is needed.
Nice vid and referenced it to remind me how the latch works. I did spray paint the bottom of the latch housing on the latch side as a reference for which side to place the jack to remove, which allows me to skip the strap. But I still carry a strap just in case.
Well, the lighting is fairly terrible, but this is still the very best video on how to accomplish releasing the secondary latch on RUclips. Well done. Most tire change videos just magic this latch out of existence completely.
My dad and I just spent 2 hours trying to get the spare off, this video helped but it was still a huge pain lol. I had to take the spare off so I would brush my frame and spray it with fluid film
This helped out, thanks. Letting it soak in wd40 for 5-10 helped release the stuck lever. It's still pretty gunked up, not sure if it should be springy or not.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!! had cable cut but could figure out the rest? thanks very much took 2 seconds to get off after watching video THANK YOU MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was about to burn my GMC Yukon Denali in the driveway just because of this specific problem. Thank you, for reinforcing my suspicions that I have mild autism and that my parents were closet anti-vaxxers.
I tried your trick on my 2010 Chevrolet Express van , I couldn't believe how easy it came out , it just fell out and I'm sitting there staring at it in disbelief, this was after hours of yanking , pulling , pounding , Jackiing , removing the rear bumper. I was tempted to just cut it out with my angle grinder. Thanks
2 beers and done ! I also cut 25 % out of the back of the lip (with a saw zaw) so if it sticks again , i just need to twist to the back cut out and slide or drop it out.
I fought with that secondary latch for two days, I cut the bottom plate with a reciprocating saw in about five minutes that holds the tire and put the tire in the bed of the truck and secured it.
My pregnant wife is sitting in my Tahoe, while I'm stuck trying to figure out why my rusted ass spare isn't coming down. Thank you man. Thank you.
,
Which one of your friends got her pregnant??😂
Great tip! As much as I hate to admit it, at 67 I'm not as young as I used to be. You helped this old man out, and I really appreciate it. Thank you very much!!!

Stumbled on your video after I picked up a suburban from a family member. You’re the man! Definitely helped get the spare off
Buddy you’re a fucking gem. Worked like a charm. Hope it feels nice knowing you’ve been helping people out big time for many years.
I wasn't even needing to use my spare, I was just changing out shocks and thought I'd drop the spare to inspect it and lube things up. Had no idea it would be such a hassle. BUT thank you NMT for helping us out!
Thank you! What I thought would be a 5 minute tire change turned in to a nightmare until I found this video! Worked great for my Avalanche
So glad I found this video when I just need to service my spare and not when I'm on the side of the road in a foot of snow. That f-ing latch is getting greased now.
Thank you so much! Got the tire down in 5 minutes after weeks of watching the wrong videos!
Thank you! Found your instructions and my husband got a stuck spare unstuck. The video made getting this "project" done faster then we thought possible.

Saved my butt today when I found my tire flat after a shift today. I got lucky with a pair of scissors that did the trick, thank you for posting this!

As a professional diesel mechanic I just have to say. That was a big hell yea win brother! Thanks!
Thank u for posting the final pic of the safety support. My wife, dogs and I were out on an afternoon drive in the woods and I inevitably ran into a stick and needed the rusted in spare

after 2 hours fooling with this secondary lock, this approach worked. Less than 5 minutes. Thanks fwam1
Fought it for an hour, watched your vid, out in less than 5 minutes. Awesome!!! Thanks!!!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Stuck on the side of the highway fighting that lock for awhile and your video saved me. Luckily I had a ratchet strap but no tools, the pry end of the lug wrench was able to fit up there and release it.
This method worked great for me. 04 Tahoe, tried all the other methods before I ran across this video. Had the tire down in minutes. Thanks!
Golly!! the screwdriver tip, and ratchet straps saved me a good 45 minutes of sweating. Thanks
Stuck on the side of the road with a flat and this video just helped me get my spare down. Thanks!

Hav an 06 Chevy and 08 GMC, same problem with both, seen ur video and made life easier, thanks so much!
Great short video. After watching and trying other methods, with no luck, making me feel dumb with this simple task. Your video had best explanation and step by step walk through. I felt like you related with my same frustration at one time. Thank You.
After watching lots of videos, I think this is the best way by far. Thanks for sharing

Dude thankyou. Did exactly as you did with the ratchet strap took a screw driver beat on the side it came loose......life saver.
2007 gmc sierra in the cleveland rust belt and this worked in under 15 minutes. Well done sir
Thank you for posting! Sprayed mine with Amsoil Metal Protector and used your screwdriver method and out it came. What a weird design and nothing I’ve seen in communication from GM that even touches on a usable remedy. Thanks again for the helpful post.

This video was a life saver! Thank you so much for making it. Now, to find the guy from GM who thought this was a good design.
Thanks man. Watched another video and that guy found an aftermarket hoist for $40. Said it worked great, much better design.
Blowout on the interstate today. Went to lower the spare and no bueno. Got a ride home on a flat bed and will fix it today with this information. Thanks!
Thanks man! Worked like a charm! I can't imagine trying to do this on the side of the highway in a snowstorm.
This video saved our bacon on the side of the freeway. Thank you for posting this!

As everyone else said, Thanks! i was beating it then decided to search, your video poped up first and it was spot on. Worked exactly as you explained.
Good trick, slightly modified version for me worked, but principles were the same. Couldn't find my long flat head, so I used the jack extension and a hammer with a little PB blaster. After spending two hours of my morning battling it, this worked like a charm.
Dealt with this today on my 08 and never got the wheel down...extremely frustrating. This video helps tremendously. 👍
It took a hell of a lot longer than 3 minutes but thank you for the video. It was the trick that finally worked.
once I remove the spare the first time in my GMC, it will no longer live in that jungle gym, under the truck EVER! Wouldn't release until I strapped it up like you said. Such great help. Thank you
Thanks for the tip. I went from 2 hours of cursing to 15 minutes and cured!
Less than two minutes to get the tire down with this technique, watching the video actually took longer. Thanks for the tip
Thanks a ton, really, this was making me crazy. Got it down and used an angle grinder to eliminate the latch and fixed this forever, if I'm worried about the tire falling out I'll use a ratchet strap for security - you'd need one along anyway. Me too - just ground the latch off. I could not see going through that again. Thanks for the video.
thanks a bunch.. Worked for me. 5 minutes. I cant imagine this thing ever working as intended. My spare is going in the box.
Thank You very much!- Very clever - I was about to get the grinder but I wouldve screwed the rim - this is absolutely stupid - did they hire Ford engineers for this one - pointless - I wont put a spare back - no way I would be able to do this on the side of the road if I needed a spare

Dude holy crap this was so helpful, I would have been stranded if I hadn’t found this video. Thank you!!!!
Since I was in the driveway I used my 2 floor jacks to hold the spare in place. Worked great. I've put a strap in the truck bag for future use. Thanks for the help.
Glen Brown I was trying to find a way that was practical in case I needed to do it away from home! Glad it helped!
Best Video on this problem so far. Excellent job! After release, I would use s longer lasting grease than WD40 though
Mine is so rusty it's going to meet the angle grinder and call it a day. If I was keeping this setup I'd just pack it full of real grease.
Haven't tried it yet but exactly what my problem is with my '08. Thanks a lot for showing me what needs to be done!!!
Thank you! I just bought a new "old" truck. After driving it for a month I decided to test the spare tire. Stuck! Gave up pretty fast then came in to watch this. Especially like how you showed the latch in great detail. Knowing how it works is half the battle! Gonna give this a whirl tonight.
By far the best video on this so far. Thanks.
Dude, thanks a ton for this video. Was stuck on the side of the highway, tire wouldn't drop... never used the crank before. What a fuckin fiasco on the side of the highway after a fuckin 10hr day doing impact windows. You're a life saver!

I too spent 2 hours and could not get the dam tire to come down. What a lousy design.
Super helpful Great Video Appreciate it after fighting with it for 3 hours . Now going back with knowledge provided by you. Thanks
Huge help getting my 2004 Silverado ready for a big road trip, thanks!
Best vid on this problem on the web.......thank you!!!
This worked perfectly for my 07 silverado. Thank you
jordan thompson glad to help!
UPDATE: It worked as shown! Thanks! I had to pursued the screwdriver with a few taps from a hammer.
This video saved my butt today. Thank you for posting!
Hope I have my WD40, ratchet strap, hammer and screwdriver if I ever have a flat. Thanks GM, what a joke.
If you can get it fully exposed you can cut off the finger that locks it in place
That's newer vehicle engineering for yo anything over 1980 is garbage
Nice vid and referenced it to remind me how the latch works. I did spray paint the bottom of the latch housing on the latch side as a reference for which side to place the jack to remove, which allows me to skip the strap. But I still carry a strap just in case.
Thanks for the video, going to try it now. Was super passed off on 4th of July trying to get my spare down.
What if the lowering mechanism is not there to lower it? Thats my issue cant seem to find anything on YT on that!
Great video, very helpful, easy and effective!!
Well, the lighting is fairly terrible, but this is still the very best video on how to accomplish releasing the secondary latch on RUclips. Well done. Most tire change videos just magic this latch out of existence completely.
Great Video! Been carrying a spare tire on my truck bed for months now, the original spare is stuck. I’m buying a new hoist.
Is the safety latch supposed to release as you lower the spare?
thank you this is much more simple than the other videos!
Great Video instructions. Took me a little longer than that but it was the help that was looking for. Awesome, keep up the good work.
Thanks for the video. It saved me a ton of time and frustration.
Thank you for the video. This works perfectly, and I already had the stuff in the back of my truck.
Lily Smith Glad it helped you out!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!! had cable cut but could figure out the rest? thanks very much took 2 seconds to get off after watching video THANK YOU MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good stuff. thanks for sharing
Took me 2 seconds after watching video. Great job dude.
RUclips for the win. Worked like a charm. Thanks man!
Thank you. Followed your instructions and in 5 mins done. Thank you.
Thank you, it did take only 5 minutes after I watched this. Crazy set up!
I was about to burn my GMC Yukon Denali in the driveway just because of this specific problem. Thank you, for reinforcing my suspicions that I have mild autism and that my parents were closet anti-vaxxers.
Yup, You nailed it with simplicity!!! MANY THANKS!!!
Thanks
Thank you so much. Using the ratchet strap made it possible to focus and work on the latch.
2 beers and done ! I also cut 25 % out of the back of the lip (with a saw zaw) so if it sticks again , i just need to twist to the back cut out and slide or drop
it out.
Can you make a video of it
I fought with that secondary latch for two days, I cut the bottom plate with a reciprocating saw in about five minutes that holds the tire and put the tire in the bed of the truck and secured it.
