  • GMT800’s (1999-2006 GM full-size trucks) all have one common issue that is going to happen: the spare tire hoist stops working. This is the easiest fix for it. It’s permanent, and best of all, FREE (provided you have the tools, or a buddy with them).

    Best suggestion ever - cutting the stupid plastic guide tube off. Now I can see exactly why my crappy aftermarket Chinese jack handle extensions weren't spinning the lowering mechanism. The square opening on the extension was too big! A few taps with my little mall and now it's a perfect fit. Many thanks!

    I just took mine apart, freed everything up, dipped it lanolin, sprayed down the whole assembly with lanolin - inside/outside/cable, spring, tube, and spare tire. Every other year. ZERO corrosion or hang ups and buttery smooth descends & hoists. The stuff is great!

    Just a tip I learned dealing with my Chevy Avalanche 2002 1500: My hoist was binding and I couldn't get it to turn (while the spare tire was still in place). It would just turn a little bit and then click and not turn anymore so it would not lower the cable. I was considering cutting the cable and then ordering a new hoist. To remove the hoist I figured I had to wiggle it a bit, but since the spare tire was still attached and tight against the frame, I wasn't sure how I could wiggle it. So next I let out some air from the tire and that released the tension on the hoist and then IT STOPPED BINDING and worked normally.

    I want to clarify. I have a spare hoist on my bench, and I can play with and see how it works, and this is important: If the cable snaps on the stock holder with the hook, the spare tire will NOT fall off. Please stop saying that if the cable breaks it wouldn’t matter and the spare will fall off anyway. NO IT WONT. I appreciate this video, but let’s get proper information out there. I HATE stuff that seizes and is a pain so yes maintenance is key. But cutting the hook off really does make it possible for the spare to fall off if the cable breaks. I don’t know why the aftermarket ones have no hook, but I am talking about the stock one. Cheers.

    I've got both a Sierra and a Ford Ranger. The Ranger doesn't have a hook, just the cable, and there's never been an issue with it (I let down the tire and lubricate the cable and mechanism once a year). I was surprised when I found out about the hook on my GM, and of course, it's totally seized. Add unnecessary mechanical complexity to a dirt and corrosion-prone area and there's always gonna be trouble!

      New to me very nice '04 Surburban, Z71 from Kansas and been in Mich. 4 yrs. Spare is flat so figured to drop and seal bead. Watched this vid., used WD40, used pry bars, hammered and didn't cuss, read owners manual but couldn't get that wheel off hook. After 90 min. decided to rewatch vid to know which side hook is on,,,that's important. Then I thought maybe I can slide my big 1/2 wide, 7" steel shaft, double fisted screwdriver through the lug nut hole and push that hook in. Working by myself I raised hoist up for hook to clear lip and lowered it easy peasy. Pretty ticked G.M. came up with that system leaving people stranded, possible dangerous situations and big wrecker bills. Glad I was home with tools and not on expressway. Not sure what I will do but remove hook as shown and tire chained to frame might work for me. Thanks to this vid. I also know this spare is original, never been on the ground and made 10th week 2004. Totally no good to even use on my farm wagons, pure junk. Again THANK YOU for this excellent video. Greetings from the farm near Battle Creek, Mi.

      The cable snapping is all due to a lack of maintenance. Lower the spare at least once every 6 months and then clean and regrease the cable and hoist internals. Interesting video I have 2 questions.. Number one: if you can't get it to come down at all from turning the Jack through the bumper, what is the next natural step.. I have an 02 Silverado. It has 105 K on it. I have never dropped a spare tire as I have never had a flat nor thought about changing the spare tire.. Now I'm older and wiser lol, and I wanna rotate to a new spare tire.. Number 2. I don't quite follow the hook issue.. On all the RUclips videos it just says put the bar in the hole and turn counter clockwise. it doesn't say to push the Spring and release the hook. so what am I missing? thanks for your time

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  2 года назад

      If you have the owners manual, it shows that to release the spare you have to use the jack to push the spring, then use the bars to let some cable out, then lower the jack. This keeps pressure on the spring which keeps the hook disengaged as the spare tire is lowered down enough to let the hook clear the mechanism. If it won’t lower down at all using this method, it means the hook is seized in place and you’re in for a real fun time (not really).
      You’ll need to spray some rust inhibitor (wd40, kroil, pb blaster, etc) on the mechanism and spring while the spare is still in place. Let it sit for 30 minutes and then try to lower the spare using the factory manual method. Repeat this process until it works. It’s a pain in the butt really.
      A lot of people have commented on how this video is removing a safety feature and I’m risking my spare falling out while driving down the road. If that’s the case, tell me why every replacement mechanism, even those from GM dealers, do NOT have the hook on them.
      Proper maintenance on the mechanism will mean you have no worries of it falling out.

      @@takeroadslesstraveled6505 I appreciate that. So the way the manual describes it that is the standard way to remove a spare tire to bear tire to raise the bottle Jack into the Spring to take off the pressure or just if you think it's stuck

    • @takeroadslesstraveled6505
      @takeroadslesstraveled6505  4 года назад +4

      it's really not critical. It's a secondary safety that has been an issue for years on these trucks. A replacement part does NOT have the safety hook on it. IF your spare fully fell out, it's probably due to the cable snapping, which means that hook wouldn't have done a thing to help.
      The best thing you can do, and this is what people fail to do, is to check your equipment regularly (every 3 months is a good practice). I be sure to fully extend the cable, clean it, lube it, and check the psi in the spare tire. The mechanisms fail and the tire gets stuck due to people not doing this, which is what happened with mine. The previous owner didn't do the regular maintenance he should have, so I developed a fix for it.

A cable in good condition will not simply snap. I may be wrong, but I’d bet that a rusty cable played a big role in your circumstance. Regular maintenance on these things is OFTEN overlooked, just like most people don’t regularly check the air pressure in their spare like they should, or even replace the spare due to its age. Not trying to insult you at all, just saying that I’m confident other factors played a role outside of, “my cable snapped”.
