I have never ever commented on a video before but this deserved one. Thinking I had a fairly easy task of changing my tire despite 22 degree weather, I got frustrated quickly when the spare didn't drop. Having wasted hours and wondering what was going on I found this video and knew what to do. 15 mins later my spare was down. Thank you so much for taking the time to create and post the video to save complete strangers a headache.

What a horrible experience. Thank you so much. Wish me luck tomorrow. Barely made it hope with a huge screw/washer in the tire. 2.5 hours on side of the road in the dark and 1.5 hours nursing a tire with a screw in it at 1:00 am. 4 hours of nonsense and tire went flat just as I pulled into the yard. Will be working on it in the morning. Thank you for sharing knowledge, tips, and learnings.

I would like to add another Thank you! I ended up in a remote spot and had to hike to a hilltop top get reception. On a whim, I searched for help while I had 4g, and thankfully found your video.
    A few more tips:
    1) at first I tried prying with the screwdriver against the rim of the jacked up tire, but had to lower the tire and jack it up again centered better on the hanger. Then the screwdriver slid easily up through the retaining plate as you show.
    2) The tire still didn't lower all the way to the ground because I stripped the lowering mechanism, I should've maneuvered the plate up through the rim while it was still jacked up!
Good luck to anyone viewing this! And thanks again.

Super happy to have found this. I wasn't getting anywhere with the channel-lock method shown elsewhere, but the screwdriver trick worked first time. No need to work through the license plate hole, either - just put the screwdriver up the side of the mechanism that has the hinge pin higher on the yoke (see frame @ 1:42). This seems like something I could actually accomplish on the shoulder of the road if I had to. Thanks!

Thank you for your help. I took me 3 hours to get the spare down, and I took great pleasure in cutting that damn safety catch off. The cable is stainless steel and in perfect shape, I have no concerns of it breaking and the tire falling out.

I had to do a roadside flat tire change yesterday. Luckily, my spare came down okay. After installing the spare and putting the flat tire in my Tahoe, I winched the cable up tight. Today, the shop who repaired my flat tire could not get the winch to release. Glad I found this video. I'll get a screwdriver after it this evening.

I just used your instructions to drop the rusty spare from my 2004 Silverado. Took a bit more effort to pry the stiff latch/hook off the mount; it's cold out today (February 28th). Thank you and thank God for you for helping me with your video.

Thank you, we're stuck on the side of the road in the rain 38F out with a tire that only dropped 4". You saved a lot of time. I ended up tilting the tire enough to cut off the boot, which made he screwdriver step MUCH easier. You don't need to jack up the tire, just have someone crank it up, jam a screw driver in and then lower it. As soon as you can see it's free move out of the way and drop the tire the rest of the way. Thanks again for your help

  • @treesandbamboo

Mine was in even worse shape. It's a 2004. I've only owned it a couple years and have never dropped it down, who knows if the previous owners did either. But could not get it to unlatch, too seized up. Was able to take the 15mm bolt out of the cable reel body and finally pivot it enough to tilt and come loose (while some of tire weight was held by a strap), then I could drop it all down. Even out in the open, I had to slam on the latch section with a hammer and big screwdriver to get it to move. Way too far gone to try and re-use. I'll be looking into an aftermarket part like you suggested. Thanks again for the video. Oh, and the tire was totally flat; despite the hassle, I'm glad I'm fixing all this now on a nice day instead of having to call a tow truck on the highway somewhere.

I had the exact same problem. That hook prevented me from being able to lower my spare on my wife’s Yukon. Thank God she saw the screw in her tire and came home before she broke down on the side of the road and me unable to lower the spare. Took me 3 hours in my garage before I gave up and had to use a cutting wheel and cut the bracket off. The tire prevented me from getting to the hook. What a terrible design.

  • @TheMinnow101
    @TheMinnow101 10 лет назад +3

One thing you'll note on the new Dorman replacement, and you can easily see the comparison at about 3:46 on the video - the bracket is a lot smaller. On my 2004 2500HD, the bracket was just barely larger than the center hole of the spare tire rim. About 1/8" larger. A good bump and the tire would certainly of come off the too short bracket. I ended up attaching a 5" piece of flat metal stock to each side of the bracket so the bracket would be long enough to support the rim.

Your video helped alot. It came out just like you said. Instead of buying a new hoist, I broke off the secondary latch and put a 1" clevis from tractor supply between the spring and the plate. It worked great and only cost $6. I also soaked the cable and hoist with chain and cable grease.

Nice video. Any tire under vehicle should be removed & inspected to make sure its inflated and will drop down with no problem. Many people ignore spare and tire change equipment in trunk of car, and never check tire under vehicle. And your 100% correct on finding that at home instead of along the side of the road. GR8 video...Thanks.

I found myself in a bind yesterday evening, this video was my life saver. WD-40 sprayed it let it set in for 10 minutes. Jacked up the wheel to get that slack as you put it. Using the screw driver to pop it off didn’t work well for me. When the WD-40 lubed it up nice I was able to push in the secondary lock by hand with some dedication. Took me five hours haha I tried to beat your three hours, nope. But it was still a very helpful video thank you very much for making this video.

So... after realizing that my tire would not come down. I figured well...I will just call the tow truck if I need help or somebody will stop and help me. Then I start really re-thinking this when you say "out in the woods, on the side of the road when it's raining and muddy, or twenty degrees below zero?" "Twenty degrees below what?" (LIL Jon face) What? Nah...I better go get this fixed A.S.A.P. Thanks for posting video and you should definitely be in Dormans Marketing Team. You definitely painted a vivid picture in my mind of what could happen. Truthfully speaking, I got 3 kids and a Wife With an Attitude (WWA). I could possibly deal with the weather, but there is no way in hell I would be able to deal with both!! Her mouth and the weather. Nah...So what's that Dorman part #.

Hi, your info was helpful so I could understand the principal.I bought a new unit and the used a grinder to cut "carefully" the semi circle piece on both sides to free the tire from the holder. Once the tire was free, I took the old unit down and replaced it. Took me all of a half hour. Figured I'd share as you did for me.....Thanks

I’m relieved that a better replacement exists . For those that want the tire under the truck anyway. After hammering on mine with a 3lb sledge and punch I discovered that not only was the mechanism shot but so was the rim on the spare. I’m keeping mine mounted in the bed with a cover from now on. Far away from salt and mud.

After fighting this release for 2 hours, your video, using the screwdriver method, is the best - 5 minutes and it's done. You could use this method on the side of the road. If you're experiencing this problem and have watched the many videos on how to fix this, don't even bother with the channel locks through the license plate hole method.

At :20 seconds in, the round cylinder 'this gadget supposed to move in and out', on my GMC was very rusty and did not move in the release the safety latch, as you reported. I was able to work the stuck tire free on my 2006 after a few attempts and using a jack on the round cylinder. Normally the weight of the tire on the cable would release it. After getting the tire down, and working the mechanism free and spraying Fluid Film inside the mechanism, it is now freed up. It may need to be part of annual maintenance in salty areas.

Just had this problem on my 04 Silverado. I lowered the tire down the 4 “ it would let it, then I attached a ratchet strap to holes in each frame rail and used it to raise the tire back up and that gave me plenty of room to see which side the hook was on to pry on it and it came right out. I cut the rubber boot out to see even better.

I just bought a used Silverado, and someone had apparently cut the cable so the spare tire would come off. The dealer gave me a spare, which I keep in the bed of the truck.
Should I invest in a new hoist?
I would also need to buy the bar that winds the cable up and down.
They must have broken it, trying to get the tire to move, and wrenched the hell out of it, so I don't have that either.

Thank you - I fought this about 45 minutes yesterday before giving up. While I can appreciate the intention of the design....good grief.

I have the replacement hoist but am not sure what it is supposed to attached to. The hoist failed when my daughter had the truck away from the house a long distance and some friends "sawed off" some sort of bracket to get the tire. I bought the replacement hoist, can you tell me exactly what it is supposed to bolt to or attach a pic? I guess I can't attach pics showing of the underside of my truck showing how the new hoist appears to fit up and attached with only one bolt.

Yo Thanks good Sir! I was 5 miles from the house when this happened to me. Could not get it off no way no how. Was not even dropping the 4 inches. Had to put the flat back on and slowly drive back home. stopping every now and again so things didn't get hot. Pulling the tire tomorrow to see if the rim is bent at all and then having the garage mess with the stupid thing. My crank may be also stripped out. Man it was bad. Thanks for the video on what happened with this.

Thank you so much! Fantastic!!!!! However, I'm hoping to save my $100 on a new hoist, and just take a grinder and cut off that stupid hook. Should do the job: my hoist isn't stripped, so it's only the catch that is screwing me up. Anyway, thanks again.

It's 15 degrees here in Niagara Falls NY . In the driveway, blown rear brake line , ABS to axle. Have to remove spare tire to access fittings .. The hook mechanism is rusted together . I'm going into the cable block and fish my saws all in there and cut the cable . Spent over an hour just trying to get the hook to release All this to replace the rear brake line to the ABS . I can understand the need for the safety lock . I lost a spare tire on my 1995 Tahoe on the highway , thank god know one got injured ... But there has to be a better way ....

Why no just cut the hook part off once you have it down?

Thank you!!! After seeing the mechanism I was able to activate the latch by hand believe it or not.
Regarding the secondary safety, what is the factor of safety on the stainless steel aircraft cable holding a 50lbs tire, give me a break. Once again engineers being engineers, I should know Im a PE.

Best solution: Torch or sawzall the bracket holding the tire, remove mechanism, buy new mechanism, grind off safety latch, replace. Takes about 45 min.
