How To Remove Cheverolet Silverado Spare Tire That Is Stuck & Won't Come Down
Chevrolet Silverado spare tire won't come down? GMC Sierra spare tire won't come down? Here's the reason for your problem - on a Chevy Silverado spare tire hoist and GMC Sierra spare tire hoist there is a secondary safety latch that easily rusts and corrodes to leave you with a spare tire that won't come down and your truck stranded on the side of the road.
Don't get stuck on the side of the road again - there are multiple aftermarket manufacturers who make the replacement 924-510 Sierra - Silverado Replacement Spare Tire Hoist on Amazon (Affiliate Link):

Unfortunately, individuals probably won't see this until they're in the same predicament, but if they do - change it now before you're on the side of the road.

My thing is every video you watch shows you how to do it with the tire already removed from the truck how do I get the tire off of the truck while it's still stuck under the truck can't get a screwdriver to the secondary latch because there's a tire there

Thanks for the video! I had this trouble years ago and forgotten how the mechanism worked. This time, after using a screwdriver to release the catch, I saturated the whole assembly with PB B'laster. Hopefully that'll help in the future.

MIne wouldn't even come down at all and had to use grinder cut cable base; what a nightmare and hope engineer designed this had to change his tire on roadside!

Yup they seize up from lack of maintenance and poor design to begin with. The secondary latch that allways seizes up is put there for a reason to prevent tire from falling down from under the truck. Safety reasons I guess . The new para don’t come with this secondary safety device so if your surviving down the highway and cable breaks so much for the dude behind you 😂I would rig up some kind of device to prevent this . Piece of chain or rat checker strap but something easily accessible. Poor design for sure who wants to crawl under there truck in the mud or snow to change a tire.At least in my old truck it’s in the box 👍🏽

I'm not sure it's rusted, it's really just a design flaw. You don't usually need a spare when a truck is new with new tires on it. My guys were having trouble with it and a screw driver unhooks it in a second as you showed.

Just had this problem on my 04 Silverado. I lowered the tire down the 4 “ it would let it, then I attached a ratchet strap to holes in each frame rail and used it to raise the tire back up and that gave me plenty of room to see which side the hook was on to pry on it and it came right out. I cut the rubber boot out to see even better.

GM should be fired from existence. Shouldn’t have been bailed out. Their engineers are retards. It’s probably a very low on the totem pole school of engineering graduates who went to GM or it’s an fresh from graduation engineers “for experience” job.

Screwdriver trick doesn't work on all secondary hooks. Does not work on 2003 Suburban. There is nothing across from the hook catch. Sawzall worked great, down in 15 sec. after spending 2 hours with a Screwdriver.

What a horrible experience. Thank you so much. Wish me luck tomorrow. Barely made it hope with a huge screw/washer in the tire. 2.5 hours on side of the road in the dark and 1.5 hours nursing a tire with a screw in it at 1:00 am. 4 hours of nonsense and tire went flat just as I pulled into the yard. Will be working on it in the morning. Thank you for sharing knowledge, tips, and learnings.

I had the exact same problem. That hook prevented me from being able to lower my spare on my wife’s Yukon. Thank God she saw the screw in her tire and came home before she broke down on the side of the road and me unable to lower the spare. Took me 3 hours in my garage before I gave up and had to use a cutting wheel and cut the bracket off. The tire prevented me from getting to the hook. What a terrible design.

Thanks for a video that actually shows how the mechanism is supposed to work and what you have to do to get it to come down.. other videos show you how to put a screwdriver up in there but I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do to get it to release. The engineers who designed these things never have to work on them or use them I've always had Chevrolet's but GM design some pretty stupid stuff.

I’m relieved that a better replacement exists . For those that want the tire under the truck anyway. After hammering on mine with a 3lb sledge and punch I discovered that not only was the mechanism shot but so was the rim on the spare. I’m keeping mine mounted in the bed with a cover from now on. Far away from salt and mud.

Was watching this vid at 11pm at the side of lonely I-80 yesterday, while almost panicking after some time trying to remove the spare tire from stowage. Didn't know what I was gonna do, the owner's manual and instructions on the jack rod sleeve totally useless. Add this to the fact I was struggling with totally rusted crap had me wishing for cutting torches or a battery sawzall. Even having a four-way and floor jack with me on the trip didn't save me, that stupid latch tang which by the way, really doesn't work as intended as you see brand new spare tires on the roadway which have dropped from stowed position. +1 for kicking the ass of the designer and engineering people who approved such total junk, and for truckers not moving over as they blow by you at 85mph with their convoy loads of compacted garbage from NYC. My old cars, one wing nut and the tire is on the ground ready to install in a minute or less. I have cycled the cable and tire up and down from time to time thinking it was ready for use should the need arise, what little I knew. 2004 Silverado with trailer and car in tow, so the damn thing was flat on the ground with very little room to work underneath. Thanks again ~
