I love this tune and really love playing it. I know pipers are supposed to add their own stylistic touches to make it reflect ones own style, but I found that it is great the way Ennis plays, so I enjoy playing that way as well. I have only heard it on the Uilleann Pipes. Looking forward to checking out "Miles and Miles of Music."
I remember this one song I used to have on his album , it went "the Praties are dug and the frost is all over...Katy lay over close to the wall." The song was "the Praties are dug." it really was a pipe tune with a minimalist lyric about katy.
@upkilt Sorry, but yer man @JMelvil has it right. Ennis is NOT playing a reel in this clip. He's playing "Pat Ward's Jig" which does indeed have the same melody as The Doon Reel, but it's a single jig.
@pantsmatants Aye - it's as though he had an extra joint to each of his fingers! I play a modern 'Concert D' set and would dearly love to play a 'flat' set like this - but my fingers simply aren't long enough to cover the span of the chanter.
He was, and he did ...as well as being a piper he was a wonderful storyteller and had a great speaking voice....he also sang .
He was a sweet beautiful soul!!!
This is the opening of a wonderful documentary all about hte man himself. Pure gold!
Ennis was said to be an elegant gentleman and probably wore a suit when no one else would bother.
I swear that man had the fingers of a bat. He couldn't help it but pick up the pipes.
There's a bunch of geese in my backyard, I wonder if they would enjoy this as much as i do.
Nice sweet pipering Seamus passed away in 1982 RIP

"The Frost is All Over" is the name of the tune.

For you to be drunk and me to be sober Kitty lay over close to the wall...
Where did you get or find or obtain this clip? ( rhetorical ) and that is great. And his fingers are as long as my whole hand.

@PDarcy
what is this documentary, and where can i find it...
@JMelvil It's played in reel time, 4/4. Do you know how to count music? Then there is no question.
@JMelvil It's the Doon REEL.
Does anyone know the name of the air he plays?
Do you have a link or soundfile? Airs are abundant in his repertoire.
What? I'm referring to the name of the one he's playing in this video.
Ask my father.... that's the name of the tune
