Hey, Michael. I've looked into it, from what I've gathered from manufacturers, wool pile is a wool terrycloth. It looks distinct from toweling terrycloth because the wool fibers fuzz up in a way cotton doesn't. It's essentially a wool sherpa fabric. Max mara uses the same type of fabric in their Teddy coats as opposed to using polyester. Their blend is a mix of merino lambswool, alpaca and mulberry silk for good handfeel, sheen and depth of tone. A max mara coat looks more like real sheepskin than any poly version. Also, it doesn't compress as easily.
Just found this video, and then found my jacket my dad bought me years ago. Pretty much mint as I didn't like the style back then. Just cleaned and conditioned it, and took it out for a spin. Nice to discovered something that I forgot I had. Thank you!
I ordered this jacket from LL Bean in 2014. Dark Brown, wool lining & fur collar. It's a great heavy winter jacket. It doesn't seem LL Bean is making them anymore...what a shame. It kept me warm during brutally cold winters in Kiev & Odessa Ukraine.
You got a real deal on that jacket. The fit is spot on. LLB made some outstanding leather jackets back in the day. The jacket seems to have had quite a bit of wear as evidanced by the creases in the back but was clearly well cared for. Wear it in good health...
Can you do a video of what your wardrobe is now? Jackets, jeans n stuff. Maybe your favorite pieces. I think you've acquired and sold stuff and it would be pretty cool to see what the current status is. Also if you're on the hunt for a specific garment or planning to get something else.
The B roll footage for this video was excellent. I'm not sure if it was intentional but the colour palette of the apartment is a great contrast to the jacket while also looking very at home there. Not sure what you'll do with the information but great video!
I have two of these jackets. I have the same wool lined one that you have there and a quilted lined one with a plain leather collar. The quilted lined one has the distressed finish and I payed $30 for it at Goodwill. The wool lined one was a gift from my friend who worked at LL Bean as a return favor for me letting him use my garage and tools to change a piston in his motorcycle. Best jackets I have. I grew up in Maine and I can wear the wool lined one over a tee shirt in 0 degree weather.
Absolutely love this video and the jacket is amazing. This video actually helped me changed my mind as before I preferred the Type-A2 style and this made me prefer the Type-G1. Shortly after watching this video, I picked up a G1 Jacket US Navy Jacket, circa 1968
this video made me research leather jackets, which lead me to find etsy, which led me to buy a bunch of vintage jackets that i didn't want or need......including the one in your video. awesome vid btw.
Fantastic jacket. I actually picked up a similar one on eBay a few months back, from the 80s and missing a brand name but rock solid condition. Timeless style.
Why did you think LL Bean wouldn't be good quality? They make some genuinely great stuff in my experience. Sure it's not top of the line but it's certainly a cut or two above most other products.
I really liked the way this jacket looked, so I went looking for it online. I couldn’t find the same jacket in as good condition as the one shown in this video, but after some looking I found another very similar style of jacket online by Schott. It’s the Schott 174S, and fortunately it was on sale too. Generally speaking, I don’t like leather jackets, because I feel like they don’t go well with the shape of my body/skin tone, and because I feel like they give off a bad boy appearance. The jacket I got completely changed what I thought of leather jackets before. The jacket was relatively more expensive than the one in the video, even though it had a discount and it wasn’t lined with wool either, but I found that as a plus, because I live in a place with a Mediterranean style climate. Compared to the jacket in the video, I felt like the one I found was better quality, but the one I got has a slightly slimmer more modern looking fit and it’s made out of Full grain cowhide not goatskin. The jacket I got also has very little room for layering, but that might be because it’s still new and hasn’t broken in yet and I have mesomorph athletic build, which might’ve also been why there isn’t much room for me to layer. Anyways, I recommend anyone interested in this jacket to check out the one I got, especially people who are looking for a slimmer style, or people who have a slimmer build.
You should have gone with the goatskin.......I live in a Mediterranean climate and anything denser than goat tends to breathe badly in the heat and humidity
Great Video. I just found a mint one just like yours on eBay today in my XXL size. Thank You for posting this video it was very helpful. What Conditioner would you use?
I found one of these as a teen in my local Salvos store........waaaay too hot and furry for the climate down here in Australia 😂 Thankfully it led me to the original A2 flight jacket that this is based off! Ive got a small collection of Eastman and Aero jackets with a Goodwear on the way
I'm not sure if LL Bean uses the same methodology, but on temperature ratings for sleeping bags the temperature given doesn't mean you'll be warm at that temperature (in this case 5º) just that you won't free to death at that temperature. I said temperature four times in that sentence! Stay toasty my friend!

I like leather jackets like this but Im weary of wearing them in situations where the leather is at risk of getting really wet. I always keep my leather jackets outside of snowy conditions though just because i hate wet leather so i use wool mostly! Also i don’t believe so! Sadly it was a gift so i don’t know too much about it
There's no problem at all with getting them wet. Just take care of the leather and the wool will take care of itself. I owned mine since it was new... probably around fifty years.

Old LL Bean stuff is coveted because almost all of it was bulletproof. There was such demand for it at one point that their flagship store in Freeport would stay open 24/7 in the 70s-80s. That jacket is a great find! I’ve come around to Sherpa over down this winter after my sainted mother bought me a Carhartt jacket with actual Sherpa in it, not Sherpa fleece.
