Just bought my step son a Chinese 110 atv. Ran when I bought it. Got it home and can’t get it to start. Hoping I can get it with valve adjustment but might be checking compression first!
Hey mate nice job found the problem & solved this will help me a lot, great video & even better you left in the parts of the video you dropped tools just makes it a more realistic haha , we all have our moments👍 Great work
Hard to find any specs on these. When you buy a head they come with the valves already in them. Best thought as this is a Honda clone would be to get a spec for a Honda version and work from there. Other option I’d consider would be to pose the question to some Tao Tao Facebook groups and see what you get for feedback. Sometimes there’s some really talented people in those groups just watch for the scammers.
Great video, helps to understand some troubleshooting. On another note, I am surprised with all the property you don't build a nice shop with all that you do there
Are you sure you don’t have a bad crank bearing giving some extra resistance? Try turning over by hand and feeling through the compression resistance. You’re looking to see if there are any other resistance ‘spots’. Not sure if I think valves would do that unless your valves are stuck. Good luck.
@@VermontLifeyeah me, my dad and my brother having a similar issue with our 125cc, we couldn't get spark from our spark plug so we had to replace the stator which finally gave us spark but now we encountered a new issue where the atv wouldn't start when we put the spark plug into the atv, but when we take it out of the atv, the engine moves, and causing a bit of smoke with the red wire from the battery? Any tips?
Huh, the way you describe it… there is too much compression for the starter to turn the motor over when the plug is in. When you take the plug out you then have no compression and the starter can turn the motor over… sounds like a bad starter. Then you have the smoking red wire. Sounds like you are really overloading the circuit. Feels like you have resistance somewhere and/or bad starter.
I have a prs 110cc kids atv, i recently had the starter burn up and melt the battery wires , i added new starter , new wiring harness and all new electrical components, and new battery The issue is when i go to start it the starter only turns the motor over about half way before hitting the compression stroke and then the starter want turn the engine any further but when i remove the spark plug it turns over free with the starter , so i out the spark plug back in and same issue to much compression for the starter so i just removed the far rocker cover and ban it turns over free when that is removed , installed the rocker cover back , and it does the same thing again , timing is correct im stumped on y the starter want get past the compression stroke of the engine , please help trying to get this atv going for my daughters
Hmm, my first thought would have been weak starter as it turns fine without the plug in. If you take the little circular cover off on the stator side and put a socket on the nut to turn the motor over by hand does it still feel like a compression stroke or does it feel like it is binding up like a shot crankshaft bearing for example? It seems something is giving you resistance that the starter can overcome without compression but the added force needed to overcome compression plus ‘perhaps’ a crank bearing is too much. I have a video where I find that I have a bad crank from low oil/no oil and repair it if that helps but overall I had a very similar issue and it was my crank bearing. Good luck and let me know what you find.
@@VermontLife well i noticed when i had the clutch cover removed and put the spark plug back in and the rocker cover back on and tried to start it as the starter gets to that compression stroke i can actually take my hand and it seems to spin pas that point very easy but anyway as i spin the clutch a little to get past that compression point and make the motor turn past the compression stroke allowing the starter to still but in motion but when it makes the full revolution it stops again every time at the compression stroke , so either the new starter is just cheap and weak or that bearing is bad like ur saying i cant think of anything else unless the valves are not accurately adjusted properly but idk if that would cause that
@@chrisfordham7582 The valves wouldn't cause resistance that keeps you from cranking unless one is rusted up tight which I doubt. It's not a weak battery either I assume?
Measuring valve clearance is not a valve job unless you meant this is a job that will involve the valves. Valve job is removal, cleaning, lapping, etc.
Having trouble with my lads atv 110cc chinese quad at the moment, so its been laid up for around 6-8 months but with ethanol free fuel, it WAS starting absolutely fine, iv charged the battery full and also got a jump pack on it incase it gets low - i pulled the spark plug and ground it an turned it over, its sparking maybe not PERFECT but its sparking, there appears to be fuel getting through to the carb at least - would my next port of call be firing some starter fluid down the neck of the carb with the air filter removed to see if it fires?
A little starter fluid into the air filter should be enough. Sounds like you have fuel and spark. Unless you’ve sheared the timing key (unlikely as it had only been sitting and was running when you parked it) you have mechanical timing as well. Perhaps your compression is low but overall I’d hit it with a little starting fluid, get it warmed up and running and see how it does after that. Good luck.
On my 125cc atv I checked it for spark and it did than replaced the head with a brand new one and it still won’t run or sputter when cranking over and I checked the timing and it seems fine and I did put fuel down the carb and it still won’t run have any ideas?
Electrical timing, sounds like you checked the mechanical timing by inspecting the timing gear and chain etc. a bad stator, bad stator wiring or bad CDI could cause that. I had to diagnose that on the yfm350er videos I did. In the end it was a bad cdi for me.
No, should be on the intake stroke. Make sure the intake and exhaust valves are opening and closing properly. Might just need to have the valves adjusted at that point. If they are way out of spec it will have low compression and not start.
Do you have a good spark and compression. Start with those three things, gas, spark and compression. If you have all those and still nothing then I'd check timing and CDI but gas, spark and compression first.
Would you have any idea what would be the problem with my atv ? It’s just like the one in the video. So after a day of riding it suddenly stopped and wouldn’t crank anymore. My guess was that it overheated so I let it cool down but ever since that it hasn’t started again. Where do you think I can start by looking ?
Does the motor crank by hand? IE pull the plastic cover off the stator bolt hole by the left foot well and put a socket wrench in there to see if the motor is seized. If it is seized then there's a motor issue to go after. (no oil burned it up, part broke internally etc.) If you can turn it by hand then I'd check the basics. (Did your battery short out and is dead? Did a ground wire come loose. Do you get a click when you press the start button to make you believe you should check the solenoid etc.) I'd start with the above.
@@VermontLife thanks for the reply! I followed your advice and came to the conclusion that it’s an internal problem. The smaller chain that’s inside the heads snapped. I believe it’s the chain to the cam ? So I have quite a project on my hands! Only thing is that there’s not much info on the parts for these atv’s online so I’m not sure which chain I need
@@JoseDiaz-zv3wp It would be the timing chain. It's not too bad a project. You should be able to remove it and replace it without taking the motor or head off. You'll access it by taking the stator cover off and a side cover on the head. With luck only the chain snapped and there's no or little other damage.
My son's apollo 125cc sport Trax lost nearly all power. It'll still crank just fine and quick, but once in gear, you have to give it full throttle to get moving. PLEASE HELP!
Sounds like carb issues. Does it start and idle? What happens as you slowly give it throttle? (Ie spit and sputter, backfire, just bog out and die.) If fuel isn't leaking out of the carb I wouldn't worry about it. I only turn them off when I have trouble, like a leaking carb. Or if I'm working on a carb it means I can shut off the flow rather than drain the tank.
Hey I’m having an issue with my dirt bike we’re I try to start it just spins the flywheel but doesn’t engage the engine do you think I might need a new starter
No, a woodruff key is a half moon shaped ‘key’ that’s sits in a channel in the crankshaft. It ensures that when the flywheel spins the crankshaft does as well. You would need to pull the flywheel to check which implies you would need a flywheel pulled tool.
I've got a 2020 Tao Tao 110 bike it was running fine for a while and now when I go to kick it over the motor spins but wont start, doesnt even sputter a little bit, I know it's not seized cause it turns by hand, when I tightened the clutch to a certain point it would sputter on 1 kick but then not do it again, I'm just lost
Have you confirmed you have spark? I would pull the plug out, keep it attached to the coil and ground it to the chassis. You should be able to kick it and see blue spark. It might be helpful to have someone else kick it over while you watch. If you have spark then put a little starter fluid down the spark plug hole and try to start it again, if it starts then dies you likely have a fuel issue. If that’s the case you may need a carb cleaning. There could be a number of things but confirming spark is a good first step.
