- ■ MUMBAI, INDIA: Dharavi, India's biggest slum, isn't exactly known for being a place where you can mingle with the locals over a couple of cold ones. But I'm not one to shy away from a challenge. I therefore took it upon myself to find a watering hole in Mumbai's roughest neighborhood so I could meet some local residents and hear their stories. Did I succeed or was this one Indian adventure even beyond the scope of this intrepid Northman? Find out in this episode where I go exploring and meeting the people of Dharavi.

I went to India last year and went to many poor villages and never felt that I was in danger, in fact I found the most honest people ever and very helpful and curious. I felt safer than in Paris, London or Rome. There are many places you would not survive doing this in the US.

I went to this slum and it was an eye opening experience. Beautiful people working hard. A thriving place. Yes, it smelled and was dirty, but the people were gentle and kind. I also went to the Colaba slum. I was invited for dinner by a taxi driver. He opened the door to his place and said "welcome to my castle". It was a tiny room where his father was cooking up goat stew for me. Delicious! Later we went to the Hard Rock Cafe. The driver, Gufran, had never been inside. I insisted he come with me and paid his way. He was thrilled. The next day he came and got me at 5am to take me to the fish market and then the flower market. Love Mumbai!!!

To be honest: While I wouldn't say that the hygiene of south-east asian streetfood markets partly is not questionable, juxtaposed western hygiene standarts are just ridiculous. You won't get food poisoning that quickly just because it is not cleaned in an minute-interval as it is here in the western countries. Heat kills all the bacteria and a working immune system will do the rest most of the time.
