We're finally hearing Unleash the Archers today for the first time! Here is their performance of Awakening from the Live at Alcatraz Festival in 2021.

OMG! You gotta listen to the studio/music video version of this song 🎶 so good! You will find out WHO sang that part 😃
Yeah, its definitely a must-watch.
Yes, the official music video shows them playing in studio setting. The sound quality is pristine, and the camera work is exceptional. They focus a lot on the musicians, as well as the lead singer, so you can see exactly who is doing what. You really will have a greater appreciation for their incredible talent and ability, from the guitarists and bassist, to the drummer. You hear the vocals much more clearly - and you get to see who's doing the growling / screaming. 😊
It's definitely worth a watch.
ruclips.net/video/gqUPGa15Oto/видео.html
And the better bass player😈
@@nikkihayes5411 I wouldn't say better. More interesting style for sure. But Nick Miller kills it not matter how many strings he's playing
Yes studio! I haven't heard a good live recording of any show they've done.
Yes! You’re reacting to unleash the archers! I wish it was the music video, but I understand why you want to hear them live. You need to hear “tonight we ride“.
Brittany is simply the nicest, most down-to-Earth & humble person in the music industry. She is a beast on kareoke night as well! 😄
The scream at 10:47 is Grant Truesdell, the guitarist with the black guitar. He does all of UTA's screams and is a very cool guy in general (which just bears mentioning). To add, Brittney has said that she was a choral performer in college and was usually given alto parts to sing. That said, she's known for her range as a metal performer and the best information I can find on her published range in the Unleash The Archers discography is C#3 to D6.
When a vocalist sounds the same live as they do in a recording... they have true talent. Brittany Slays.... slays!!!
Shout out to Brittney Slayes who just had a baby last month!
I love the band, and I love the song, but that festival audio was muddy as hell. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it anyway. And they almost never looked at Grant Truesdell when he growled, except that last time. The Full Band Playthrough Video is the one all the other reactors have started with. Britney Slayes' range and endurance are legendary, and she often gets compared to Bruce Dickinson.
yeah she sounds good but the strings are low and the drums just sound terrible.
Definitely sound issues. My family run sound at events here. I hope she watches the video.
It's sad that there aren't really any live recordings with good audio for UtA. That karaoke may be the best one 😅
Brit' just had a baby!
They've quickly become my favorite band, supplanting one of their big influences, Iron Maiden
I was at this show and the sound was bad in general. There was a strong wind though, so that probably was why they had trouble getting it right.
As female vocalists in heavy metal go you've done brittney slayes and Floor Jansen now you need to do Noora Louhimo of the band BattleBeast, she has so much power she shakes the earth when she sings.
Great reaction Bethany! I had not seen this live performance before but I was (am) really impressed by the studio video version of the song. This live version is equally enjoyable. Thank you.
You should also react to "Tonight We Ride"! That will give you an idea of Britney's range for sure.
Well, I'm going to dissent here. I think it's cool that you did a different version than the one everybody else reacts to. You still get a really good impression of how talented Brittney is here.
I agree that it’s nice to have something different, just not that.
First, thanks for the mic upgrade - the hissing issue is resolved. Second, thanks for the reaction/analysis. Unleash the Archers aren't my normal cup of tea despite their obvious talent, but this analysis helped me appreciate them more.
One more suggestion here to listen to the full playthrough. It doesn't have the same energy as a live performance, of course, but the sound quality is so very much better, and the filming shows close ups of all the members, which is fascinating. Plus, it utilizes the "Brittney Choir". When writing, she sometimes can't decide exactly which way she wants it to be, so she records it several times and picks one...or sometimes likes them all, so she uses them and harmonizes with herself :) Great reaction, hope to see more UtA on your channel!
You got the reference to the 80s right.
She is a fan of singer Geoffrey Wayne Tate (January 14, 1959) an American singer, born in Germany. He is best known for his work as a vocalist in the progressive metal band that started in 1982, Queensrÿche.
Geoff Tate is a high baritone who was alongside Queensrÿche who released albums such as the Queen of the Reich EP, The Warning, Rage for Order, Operation: Mindcrime and Empire albums.
I've never seen her mention women as a reference in singing.
He is currently touring with his band Operation Mindcrime.
Agreed! Tonight We Ride!
Welcome to the family.
For better understanding her range, you have to look:
Northwest Passage
Faster than light
Tonight we ride
Highly Highly recommend you check out the studio version. and then if you want to see her voice on further display, check out the Tonight We Ride video, or for a completely different side of them, Northwest Passage.
A phenomenal power metal band from Canada and a new favorite of mine; a COVID discovery. Guitarist Grant Truesdell is providing the harsh vocals. Their last two albums are linked conceptually and tell a great story. Awakening is the opening track on one of them. FYI they're high fantasy nerds.
Grant Truesdell is the guitarist that was doing the growl. You can hear and see it better on the full band playthrough video.
I love their cover of Northwest Passage.
When I first heard Unleash The Archers, they were performing their song Tonight We Ride. It didn't resonate with me and I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. Then I heard the studio version of this song. Brittany's introductory belt instantly grabbed me, and the incredible chord progression in the chorus and screamin' guitars kept me mesmerized. Great insights, Bethany! I think you might like to hear Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox. If Brittany is a vocal extrovert, Courtney is more of an introvert; very controlled, very intimate. I'd suggest you start with Courtney's one-take performance of Circle With Me. Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/zMnfkW9UZc4/видео.html
Reminds me of a young Lee Aaron back in the 80's or even now. She worth the listen. She's Canada Metal Queen.
You should have a lisen to 'Tonight we ride' or 'Test your metal' with Unleash the archers. :)
Lots of people recommend and react to Tonight We Ride but I would also highly recommend Time Stands Still. One of my favorite by them.
Time Stands Still and Test Your Metal are a couple of my favourite Brittney "intense" tracks. It would be awesome if they released a remastered version of that album, to bring the production quality up to the same level as the Apex and Abyss albums.
She also does something that I have only seen Damian Wilson do, sing to the side of the microphone (not directly into it) on power parts.
You have to watch the official video, then you will have an immersive experience in this song, the video is very well done in that sense.
IMMORTAL IS MORE THAN A NAME!
AWAKENING
To look up into the night's sky, to see the stars they are changed
To know a thousand years or more have passed, and I am the same
This mountain hollow that keeps me in a suffocating embrace
A prison and a safe haven, it's always been this way
Lo, a new master calls me to awakening, I know this one brings the end
Far out beyond the darkness I've been living in it's true, a whole new world awaits
Stellar constellations rise, lighting my way in the night
Once again revitalized, to roam; to never die
My path begins with the new dawn; a voice is calling my name
It always starts as whispering then manifests to a scream
I'm drawn to the creature that wakes me, bound to them by the curse
My soul exists only to serve, a covenant of birth
Fear not the task ahead there's no escaping it, there's no good nor evil here
Stellar constellations rise, lighting my way in the night
Once again revitalized, to roam; to never die
Come to me, awakening
Follow my voice, come to me
Fear not the task ahead there's no escaping it, there's no good nor evil here
Stellar constellations rise, lighting my way in the night
Once again revitalized, to roam; to never
Lighting my way in the night
To roam; to never die
my fave metal band of all time, and also from my home province of BC in canada.
Thanks for the external microphone and for the video, perfect as always
There's a very nice, very clear song they sang live in 2018 (UNLEASH THE ARCHERS - Apex (Live Acoustic Version) on CTV News). You should check it out. The drummer performance was just amazing :)
putting the 10min solos TWICE in the video is a powermove!
Also, don´t be worried about the "right" names for things, cuz there r none, people mostly do what they think sounds good and that they can do it again in studio or live.
And it was really cool to see you doing some small headbanging, thats how a new metalhead is born
if you want to hear the singers range listen to Tonight We Ride from the same concert.
I like the studio version of this song much better. Everything's much clearer.
Nice to see you analyzing Unleash the Archers. Brittney Slayes is a great vocalist. Her style is inspired by male power metal singers of the 80's and that's reflected in the heavier, darker style with the wide vibrato and the amount of compression she uses in her singing. Unfortunately, there are little to no good quality live recordings of them available on RUclips, so in many cases it's better to do their music videos to not have recording quality and live audio production issues get in the way of their performance. If you want to hear a song that really shows off what Brittney can do, I'd recommend Tonight We Ride. If you really want to do a live version of it, the only one I found on RUclips that does her vocals any justice is this recording: one: ruclips.net/video/3Kzs5kxHLSI/видео.html
Awesome reaction, good reactor liked and Subbed,
This is a nice suggestion... "Bridge Over Troubled Water (So Hyang Version)" by a Filipino girl group 4TH IMPACT I wish you have many more subscribers.
HERE IS THE LINK : ruclips.net/video/sfdyk8Sa_Ys/видео.html
Britney is hands-down my favorite female vocalist, and one of my favorite vocalist period of all time! If you really want your mind blown by a singer who has power and range listen to one of her major influences. Brittany and the guitar player both site Daniel Heiman (and, Lost, Horizon )as a major influence, and he has only gotten better with time the new stuff he did with a Sacred Outcry is otherworldly
The band's Full Run Through video had been recommended by others. It will give you a perfect picture of who is doing what.
Also, Brittany Slays sings Opera Battle video, would be a great video for you to react to. It's 2 Metal singers singing opera and having a drink together over Skype I believe.
That was with Ty Christian from Lords of the Trident. ruclips.net/video/Txb0GV9PGl4/видео.html
The guitarist on stage left, Grant Truesdell, does the growling. Whoever decided not to cut to him during any of that verse ought to be fired.
The other guitarist, Andy Kingsley, does really nice clean vocals in a few of their songs, like “Earth and Ashes” and “Carry the Flame.”
This is a festival, and since it is daylight out it looks like UTA are playing fairly early in the day. As much as they want the crowd to get crazy and jump around, as a fan you probably end up seeing 6-10 bands over a 10-12 hours period, and the festival can sometimes go up to four days, so you have to conserve energy when you can. Festivals usually have a wide range of bands, so I'm sure there were diehard UTA fan up near the front going crazy because that's who they came to see, but the majority of the crowd is there for the headliners at night (Metallica, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, et al). Jinjer still plays pretty early at festivals (if you check out Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air 2019 they were the first band at 11am and their set was cut short due to audio issues), but they are slowly moving up the ranks to play later in the day/night.
Tonight we Ride....of course. And Time Stands Still are 2 that you'd really enjoy. If you think she showed range and control here....listen to those two songs.
Check out her video where she sings opera to hear her best classical upper range. She is a classically trained singer that heard Iron Maiden and decided to become a metal vocalist, also a history student in college and a gamer geek. Not important but pretty cool facts that I can relate to.
Awesome!!! Do a double reaction and do the studio version. I don't remember anyone else ever doing that ever before. Great band and great reaction. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦🤘🤘🤘🤘🥂
If you want more live performance The Wind That Shapes The Land from the same show is good. Or the karaoke bar performance she did of Queensryche - Queen Of The Reich. Honestly absolutely amazing 😁👍
It is a great group with great music that does not get any radio play here in the Philly area.
If you want to hear her belt an A5, listen to Tonight We Ride
The growl was by Grant, the guitarist with the black Ibanez. For this one you should really have gone with the studio playthrough, it's exceptionally well filmed...
Next Abyss from the latest album, please.
Please check out the studio version, you will get so much from it. Live stuff can be a bit confusing sometimes.
I believe Brittney is a mezzo soprano, so her voice is lower than most of the singers you might’ve listen to on this channel, but she can well really really high if you listen to “tonight we ride“.
The best female vocalist ever
B Slayes is one of the most skilled singer of metal circus.
You have to listen to the studio version of their debut hit song: UNLEASH THE ARCHERS - Tonight We Ride (Official Video) | Napalm Records.
It's like sitting on a booster rocket. So much power!
If you want a good idea of her range check out Tonight We Ride. She gets low and high and it's glorious.
Tonight We Ride shows off her range, power and stamina but then there's her composition skills and singing styles across the song Apex, Despair, City of Iron, Dreamcrusher and Wind That Shapes the Land. Shadow Guide is insanely underrated for range and skill imo. False walls is one of my favorites as a whole song, but not the most technically impressive. She really drops down for The Path Unsought. General of the Dark Army is insanely popular from their early work, also a great video, 4 in the Hand and Tied to a Stag are amazing songs from their first album, raw but potent as hell. Of course, my absolute favorite song is Abyss, anyone who read fantasy as a child will get swept away in that one, brought me to tears the first time I heard it.
Check out Queen of the Reich by Queensryche, live in Tokyo 1984 or 1985. The intro held note in this song is an homage to the intro of QOTR. The lead singer of Queensryche's aunt was in the Cincinnati Opera.
After that check out Brittany doing Queen of the Reich in a karaoke bar after a show.
Esse mulher canta demais, e tem um timbre sensacional além de tudo
This song is frequently recommended as the first one for reactions, which makes sense for reactors in general, but to me for vocal coaches there are better ones to really see what Brittney can do vocally, like Tonight We Ride, Test Your Metal, General of the Dark Army, Cleanse the Bloodlines and from this same Festival, The Wind That Shapes The Land in which Brittney has some insane vocals with better audio. And lastly just for kicks I would suggest a RUclips video of her singing Karaoke in Edinburgh, while being tipsy after a full show and still slaying it, pun intended.
As you heard, Brittney has an amazing voice. This doesn't even reach the top of her range. Listen to the song Tonight We Ride for some incredible singing. Unfortunately, the mix at this concert doesn't do the band justice.
If you want to see an audience that gets into the music, watch Epica performing Beyond the Matrix. The best version is probably live at the Zenith. (and Simone Simons of Epica is one of my favorite singers).
You should also try out 'Tonight we ride' from them ! She's a beast on vocals, hence her name : Brittney Slayes
Studio version is the one you should have listened to considering most live recordings are some contractors way in the back of the crowd with their 3.5mm microphone lol
Their music is in big lines the same way as of Iron Maiden. Except for the grunt-like parts, never heard Bruce Dickinson do that.🤣
But the way Brittney and Bruce sing is quite the same.
Btw She also sings on 'Fate of Man' of the last 'Star One' album, 'Revel' In Time by Arjen Lucassen. Very, very good stuff! ruclips.net/video/vn7P3oVMnys/видео.html
amazing...
Spawnette of Ronnie James DIO.... The master of a rock vocal
Yaaaassssss!!!! I was so happy when you found nightwish, and I love this for you too! Please go down the rabbit hole and listen to a bunch of their stuff!
she is also an opera vocolist
I miss spelled that lol
Can't do UTA without watching tonight we ride
Check out Star One - Fate of Man... there she just shines!! :)
Definitely recommend the music video. It's much better.
Brittney can also sing opera, btw.
Great reaction!! I recommend you checkout the official video of this song. Alot of your questions are answered there. Britney has often been referred to as a "female Bruce Dickinson." (The lead vocalist for Iron Maiden.)
should of done official video but still good
thinking she had a baby recently
Great reaction! PLEASE watch 'Awakening - full band playthrough' you will see more of the finger work that you wanted to see and the back up screams... plus also check out 'Britney Slays - Queen of The Reich' (queensryche/geoff tate cover) she slays it karaoke - after a full set performance! she'll blow you away!!!
D5 F5. A5. Britney. is an Metallic Mix Belt 😁😁🤘🤘🤘🤘
Bella Taylor Smith - How great thou art
Thanks for the great reaction!! One of my most favorite songs by them is "The Wind That Shapes The Land". If you take requests from the comment section that would be my song! 😁
Here's the link from the same show...I personally think the video picks up the vocals better on this song.
ruclips.net/video/9VoHzwvOO3o/видео.html
Thanks again!!
Ps, maybe you can cover how wind (like at this show) affects vocals during an outdoor performance, and maybe ways to compensate for that (vocal technique or mic positioning, etc). 😊
You said "There wasn't so much movement on the crowd" yes it's true and i think the reason is that I saw a lot of bald man in the crowd, they all were hypnotised while watching those long hairs continously spinning around. 🤣😂😈
If no one has recommended you see Britney do a tipsy opera battle yet you absolutely should seek that out.
Great reaction and analysis. Love me some UTA. Unfortunately the audio from this festival is pretty muddy IMO and doesn't really reflect how good the sound live. Heard them live in a small club in Boston last December and it was a fantastic show. As others have mentioned there aren't alot of good live videos of them on YT. I highly recommend the live band playthrough of the song to really hear how clean their sound is. For me they are modern version of an 80's power metal band and Brittney sounds like the daughter of Ronnie James Dio or Bruce Dickerson. She was a member of the award winning University of Victoria Chamber singers group.
This song is the first one on their album Apex. Apex and Abyss are concept albums that tell the story of the Immortal and the Matriarch. Brittney has done videos on Napalm Records explaining the backstory for each track on both albums. This one is the first 4 tracks of which Awakening is the first. ruclips.net/video/ofm9RneJ1bs/видео.html.
One of my favorite Brittney performances is her singing the Queen of the Reich in a karaoke bar in Scotland after doing a full show. ruclips.net/video/280DRqoGyLw/видео.html. As others have mentioned her singing Brindisi in the Power Metal Opera battles is awesome. Some of my other favorite UTA songs are Time Stands Still, Cleanse the Bloodlines, Apex, Abyss, Soulbound, and my current top song, The Wind that Shapes the Land.
Wait till your hear Brittney Slayes (lead singer) Does Opera... or react
Fun fact: She just had a wee one recently.
I think one of the guitarists does the growlings but I suppose is too hard to do when you are soloing live XD (unless you are Alexi Laiho or Chuck Schuldiner XD).
Let’s also give a thank you to French and German publicly funded television. (Even though perhaps the sound could have been a bit better.) Kulturauftrag ftw :)
You've done it again! First time I watched one of your reactions, you had reacted to the wrong version of Nightwish's Ghost Love Score, and I pointed you towards the correct video which you watched and responded to my comment saying it was much better.
Well, this was the wrong version to react to :P Don't get me wrong, it's awesome, but the live band playthrough video is much, much better. If you wanted a live performance, there are also much better ones than this available, where she actually uses her whole range. She didn't even come close in this one.
To get a hint of her range, check out Tonight We Ride.
Oh, oh, oh! And they just released a new one that is a classical composition, not a metal one; ruclips.net/video/aGzu5QTbz1U/видео.html where the drummer plays all kinds of instruments and the vocal performance is very good as well. Though she's faaaar from using her whole range here she does use a lot of other good vocal techniques.
The guy with the very red hair does some deep grunting and the wolf sound, usually, with Britney.. The Lord of the Rings schmeagle sound comes from the other guitar player with the darker guitar and darker hair... yes.. on the right, But not the tall base player.
If you liked this song, you have to react to a song called tonight we ride is great and there they also show their vocal quality, the guttural voice you heard is not her it is the second guitar that makes the gutturals in fact the band has undergone several changes, the only 3 originals of the band are the vocalist, the second guitarist and the drummer, the bassist the others are relatively new
So happy to see you finally react to UTA. Brittney is a powerhouse! Now, everyone will be telling you to check out the studio live version of this song and then "Tonight We Ride", which you should. But then...you need to react to Brittney singing opera! Both of these metal singers just kill it!
ruclips.net/video/Txb0GV9PGl4/видео.html
80s metal is definitely a big inspiration on her singing, apart from the high level choir she used to perform with. She mentions Geoff Tate of Queensryche as her main vocal inspiration but clearly in the same vein as others like Bruce Dickinson as well
Do Tonight We Ride next.
Hey, I enjoyed this one very much :)
You should check out NE OBLIVISCARIS - Intra Venus (live in Montreal), there's a couple of voices there that are well worth your time. Oh, and the live recording is great, even better than the studio version.
Cheers!
Now we talking
I would be super grateful if you would react to Marc Martel performing Nessun Dorma as both Pavarotti AND Freddie Mercury (search for Marc Martel Mercurotti). It is one of the most magnificent things you will ever hear! Thank you!
audio much cleaner .. nice
As others have mentioned, the sound quality in this recording is a little . . . less than ideal. UtA have some great music videos, and these - obviously - have far better sound. I'd recommend Tonight We Ride, Faster Than Light or Abyss. For starters.
The gruff vocals are provided by guitarist Grant Truesdell. Brittney can add grit to her tone when she needs to, but I've never known her to growl.
This is cool in that it shows what they can do live, but the studio playthrough video sounds better in the recording process. This is their signature song. Vocal goddess Brittany and drummer Scott recently became parents. Great reaction! (The crackles growl is often referred to as a goblin scream. As the others stated that's Grant, who provides a dark contrast, to Brittany 's vocals)
FRED!!!!
@@HistoryBuff long time!
I'm used to the studio OMV and this version sounds muddy and indistinct in comparison - recording and balancing in a live concert must be a nightmare. Still an impressive song. Britney's vocals come through better than the guitars here I think. Grant's growls kind of appear from nowhere, the camera work isn't catching him (he plays the black guitar).
You mentioned an 80's vocal influence - Britney's delivery is often compared to that of Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden.
I know it´s hard to sing live, especially this high, but I think Brittney was a little bit flat a few times. Was she fully healthy at that time?
please react on the humble family band from the Philippines called Franz Rhythm on their cover of Always Remember Us This Way or What's Up. thank you ❤️❤️❤️
The Female Benedict Cumberbatch a.k.a. Sherly Holmes
I have been to Festivals where the sound was just bad very bad, this Festival was not that bad, but it was not good either.
Still, you take the bad with the good that's why you always go to festivals with friend even if the sound sucks you can have a great time being together.
Agreeing with others who've mentioned the incredibly poor audio/PA quality that was afforded the bands at that stage/festival.... the sound quality is abysmal, or worse. Jinjer had a horrific time on that stage, and they are the consummate pros at adapting to a problematic sound setup.
For this song, I'd stronger suggest you listen to the studio whole band playthrouigh version; there is some overdubbing (er, 'layering' in today parlance) but the impeccable quality makes up for a bit of multi-track shenanigans.
Also, if you like to watch musicians at their craft, that is the version to see.
imo.
EDIT : one more thing about Jinjer's 'experience' on that same stage this year: I can't remember which song, but you can see Tatianna struggling SEVERELY with pitch, and Tati NEVER struggles with pitch...
At least 15-20 cents off.
Repeatedly, she pulls the in-ear monitor to hear the actual pitch on the stage, and the anger in her face is truly frightening.
I don't want to cast aspersions, but the ONLY thing I can think of is someone had manipulated the pitch in the in-ears and messed it up, either on purpose or perhaps someone took a feed from a mixing-board-to-audio-storage line where everything is being snapped (autotuned) to concert pitch fr the puropse of making a festival wide mix where all the band-specific partial down-tunings are "rectified" ... (yes, some bands due down tuning outside the regular/traditional pitch structure).
Interestingly enough, a smaller 'traditional rock stage' not far from this one had GREAT sound quality and no issues at all.
The sound quality at that festival was highly 'variable'... and that is puttin it nicely.
Said this to EVERY reactor for over 5 years...do NOT listen to a band live as your first reaction. Why would you not listen to a band putting out their music at their highest quality...which is what the studio recording usually provides?
You have to give credit to the drummer!
