    When you start buffing the first spoon, I thought: "meh..." and the second one:"what kind of sorcery is this???"
    This really pushing me to try airbrushing.

    GunPla Fixation any chance you have a video of applying the water based clear as to see how it looks? Does it really do it any better appearance or just extra protection for the chrome? Thanks

    Velmi slušný výsledek! Pro mne až překvapivý. Musím se ale zeptat: Jak se povrch chová, když se ho dotknete prstem? Vytvoří se otisk, který se dá setřít, nebo se tím povrch znehodnotí? Děkuji.

    Alclad shine is quite nice, however, if you look at both close, or under magnification, little tiny black spots can be seen through the chrome with Alclad. Spaz looks more uniform every single time without the black base shining through. I was very impressed as how well Spaz takes to buffing too. I would like to see how a car bumper would actually look with Spaz Stix.

      Thanks Christopher. I generally do not seal metallic paints, since you lose some of the natural metal sheen when you do. Unless you are handling the piece constantly, you can probably get away with not sealing it.

    I just tried the spazstix chrome as you did here, but could not replicate the finish you achieved here post buffing? Spoon test , I used nil primer, spazstix ultimate black backer then the chrome. I could not achieve the finish you managed? Applied the chrome in light covering coats on one test about 3 coats, 2nd test I applied 2 light covering coats then one heavy wet coat at the end and still couldn't achieve the mirror quality you managed to obtain here? Just wondering what I missed, did you prime the spoons prior to the backer & chrome coats perhaps this is why ?

    • @Fluxburner
      @Fluxburner 5 лет назад

      Yeah ok, I didn't realise that, but makes sense. I will run a lacquer gloss black and re-test.I did try it through a clear canopy to create the mirror effect in reverse since it is designed for reverse application with the black backer , still didn't look mirror chrome to me, as some trade examples, perhaps the clear gloss needs to go down first in reverse application ie a RC shell body?

    Hi. Thank you for your very informative video. I bought the aerosol Spaz Stix Ultimate Mirror Chrome bottles for a project I am working on. Perhaps (since you have expertise on this) you can give me advise. I am "chroming" a wooden table.
    I sanded the table, painted it shiny black and now I am waiting for it to dry.
    My question is: how long do you recommend me to wait before I paint it with Spaz Stix?
    Also, after I paint it, then I buff it (like you show) should I THEN paint it with the Spaz Stix Clear Coat?
    Thank you

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  9 лет назад

      A wooden table? wow... ok. I specialize in model kits and small plastic parts, but here it goes... The duration of wait depends on the type of black paint you used. If its an enamel (oil based) paint, I would wait a few days until it is completely dried. Lacquer-type paints dry and cure much faster. Try to keep it in a dust free environment. I've never used the aerosol cans, so I'm not sure if the application or type is the same as airbrush type. If you buff, do it lightly otherwise it will come off and the black will show through. If you don't clear coat it, the finish will be vulnerable to scratches and pealing, however, clear-coating will make you loose some of the natural sheen of the metal coat, so it's give and take situation. Good luck!

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  3 года назад

      I use cheap regular hardware store lacquer thinner to clean any type of paint. Don’t soak your airbrush in it, just use it to wipe the inside of the cup and, backflow and flush out to change colors. Don’t use Mr Leveling to clean your airbrush, that’s just wasting money.

    Hi there. Did you need to prime before hitting the plastic with your alclad chrome? Also would you recommend black enamel as the base?

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  9 лет назад

      Alclad metallics need a primer before applying. High shine metallics like chrome need a gloss black base. Enamel black gloss tends to be really shiny and ideal for Alclad chrome. Cheers!

    After applying the black gloss, how long you wait before applying the chrome?? I usually wait 10 to 15 minutes and when I apply the chrome I get like a blue burn effect instead of chrome. Note that I'm using aclad black gloss as well.

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  9 лет назад

      Delmi Casia I stopped using Alclad Gloss black because I felt it was too runny. My recommendation is to wait until the black base is fully cured. I think 15 minutes is way too short. For enamels, I typically wait at least a day before I apply the chrome.

    and most of the tutorial i found it says to use low psi and thin coat but i saw you spray it pretty heavily (correct me if i wrong) ?

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  7 лет назад

      qwert54965 For best glossiness, you need to apply a "wet" coat, which is why I went a bit heavy on the spray. Also, enamel Gloss paints are glossier than any other type of paint, they level out the best.

    Thank you for doing this comparison. I'm looking for a chrome like spray paint for the restoration of the inside area of a cars front turn signals. They were painted chrome from the factory, but no idea what type/brand they used. However, after watching your video, I'm sure either one of these two products will suit my needs. I'll probably use the Spaz Stix, since it is less expensive and will do exactly what I need it to do. You mentioned both give the best results over gloss black base. Can you tell me what type paint you used for this? Will any gloss black work, i.e. enamel, lacquer, etc.?

    • @jiminboo

      Hey, I don’t think either of these paints will suit your needs. These are hobby grade paints made to go on scale models and such. They are not meant to be handled much or withstand the elements etc...

    • @ButchNackley
      @ButchNackley 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the advice. However, I've already ordered a can of the Spaz Stik. I hope it will hold up okay. But it won't get wet or anything, as they will be sealed once the lens are glued back on. What I'm needing to do is recoat the reflector area behind the lens. They are 30 years old and the sun faded out the lower portion of them.

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  7 лет назад

      I personally do not recommend Alclad Gloss base because I find it too thin and "runny" and not as glossy as enamel paint. I've gotten better results with enamel gloss black paint, like Tamiya, Testors, Model Master, etc. Good luck!

  • @jiminboo

    Airbrush machine? you mean a compressor? My compressor is an Iwata Power Jet Pro. My recommendation is any oil-less piston compressor that is at least 1/8 horse power motor and can push 30-35 psi or more. Anything less then that I wouldn't even bother. Smaller compressors tend to overheat easy. If the compressor has an auto-off feature, even better. Also, a reservoir tank is nice, but not required. I also recommend a pressure regulator, moisture trap and gauge. Thanks for watching (^-^)/

  • @htdtr

    I love P.Silver, its awesome, but its so hard to come by for most. P.Silver is more expensive and smaller. Alclad has a wider variety of metallics of different shades. Now, if its not Plate Silver you are talking about, you are not comparing apples to apples. Most folks prefer pre-thinned, takes the guess work out, you won't want to accidentally lower the particle concentration too much ;) thanks for watching! (2/2)

    Sorry if this has all ready been asked, but what do you use to buff the paints in this video? I'm not new to painting kits by any stretch, but i mostly paint by hand, and have never really had to buff anything haha. But, I want to try my hand at painting some xbox one controller shells, and I for sure want to try the spaz chrome, and maybe try some clear colours over top for coloured chrome, and I for sure want to have that nice buffed finish. Just a very soft, clean cloth. By "my car", you mean your actual 1/1 car? If so, I doubt it will withstand the elements. These are model paints we are talking about here, don't think they are designed for real life abuse, but you can try! Good luck!

    Hello what psi are you spraying at? I`m struggling to get a mirror finish with alclad, it just comes out grainy. I notice you seem to spray all in one coat, not building up in multiple coats and letting them dry between.

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  9 лет назад

      I spray at the recommended pressure that's on the bottle, at about 15 psi. Make sure your base coat is super slick and shiny. Any bumpiness, orange peel, scratches, dust, etc will be amplified ten fold once you lay your chrome down. I do spray in multiple coats, not shown in video for brevity. Good luck!

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  9 лет назад

      Yes you can clear coat, but you will lose some of the natural metal sheen. If coating is absolutely necessary, use water based clear gloss like Alclad Aqua Gloss. I've not masked or decaled on top of these paints, but I would say these paints are quite delicate, they aren't as resilient as regular paints. Test on spoons first, good luck.

    I appreciate your comparison of Spaz Stix vs. Alclad II Chrome. I had no vested interest in either paint solution, but from what I've seen from your own video the Alclad painted spoon had a much better initial reflection, and even when buffed the reflection was sharper and more precise that of the Spaz Stix (BTW, who came up with such a lame name for a paint product?) From what I've seen a light coat of Alclad on top of a glossy black primer is all that is needed and from what research I've done it doesn't seem to me that Alclad was ever designed to be buffed as heavily as you do, nor as heavily sprayed onto the object. Just a light wiping or brushing to remove the dried paint powder between layers is all that is necessary. However, for the money spent and the amount you get, depending on what project you are working on the Spaz Stix looks like it could be a viable alternative to Alclad II. I just don't think the Spaz Stix reflection looks as sharp as the Alclad II; it looks like it could be "shinier" but that's because it's actually more diffuse.
    P.S. Really enjoyed your video though, nice work!

    • @mrwolf31
      @mrwolf31 8 лет назад

      +S Coff You are right. I noticed that Alclad is more shiny and metal-like. Spaz is a cheaper alternative, but for someone who wants to use a spray can and not too keen about details, spaz is better..

      I don't recommend hand brushing metallic paints. Alclad and Spaz Stix are for spray painting only. Your method for metallic blue is correct. I would add you need a black gloss base before the chrome to make it shine, and a gloss clear coat after the blue to protect the paint.

    Thanks man! any idea on how to do this but make it look gold? I really want to work up a Red Frame Astray, but the MG has that ugly plastic gold. The best think I can think of is using a very diluted clear yellow on top of chrome.

    • @jiminboo

      From experience, a light coat or two of clear orange over chrome yields a very nice gold. The problem with this is its difficult to achieve an even gold color on larger pieces. My recommendation would be to use Alclad Gold, or Mr Super Metallics Gold, which is lighter in tone. Those two a very nice gold colors, fine metal pigments that are very convincing gold. Good luck!

      GunPla Fixation Thanks! I'll just be using it on small details of the scabbard, pommel,and hand guard. I'll definitely keep that in mind though for something like the MG V2 Ver.Ka I want to do a custom paint job on. Also what are your opinions on the Spaz Stix Color Change Holographic paint? I'm planning of doing some custom work on a Crossbone Maoh, but I'm also looking into using some light diffraction film over a silver painted area to create the glowing shimmer/moonlight effect in the anime. I'm asking you because I can tell you know your stuff, and while I built kits out of the box every year or so for the past 4 years, I'm really looking into making high quality kits.

      +ZylethX I'm not sure about holographic paint, never used it before, but seen videos of it and it looks nice. Alclad makes a holographic paint too. Best way to learn about a paint is to test it out on a spoon ;) Cheers! 😉 ✌

      GunPla Fixation Gotcha. Thanks. Is there any Chrome Gold paint you would recommend? Or one that gives the same sheen/shiny type results as this one?

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  9 лет назад +1

      servantofthe99 for a really shiny gold, apply a couple of light coats of clear orange with the airbrush on top of chrome, then seal it with Aqua Gloss (check out my LBX final video to see the results of this). The results are very shiny & stunning, however, it's a bit difficult to pull off since if you spray too much it will look too orange and not gold at all. Or if you spray unevenly it will not look right, so if the piece is large I don't recommend this technique unless you're experienced. Other golds that look nice are Alclad Gold and Mr. Color Super Metallic Super Gold. Test on some spoons first is what I always recommend, good luck!

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  8 лет назад +1

      Do not use the Spaz Stix backer. You cannot use the backer as a base coat, since it is not the slick gloss black base needed for modeling. The backer I think is uses in clear RC bodies and you apply it on top to the Spaz Stix so that the other clear side is reflective. I use enamel gloss black from Model masters as a base coat, but you can use any gloss black. I recommend enamel paint as it levels nicely and it's typically very glossy.

    Hi again. Three questions please.
    1.Just wonder after how much time you should start to buff the surface with cloth after you have chrome painted the item?
    2. There are some videos where they dry the item with a blow dryer/hair dryer instead of wiping/buffing. What is best - wiping with cloth or blow drying?
    3. If I would choose a blow dryer, should I blow warm, hot or cold air?
    Thank you.

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  8 лет назад

      I waited maybe 10 minutes to buff lightly, the paint dries relatively fast. Follow the label instructions, I wouldn't recommend blow drying...

      +GunPla Fixation Ok, the cloth is just usual cloth, it is not treated with some medium right? The other question I have is: you used airbrush, but if I buy Spaz Stix which they sell in cans like deodorant - will it function? Is it the same Spaz Stix?

      You can chrome anything really, as long as the surface is prepped properly. That being said, these paints are not designed for rough or constant handling, and will peel, scratch or fade if not properly coated and protected.

      Alclad comes pre-thinned, you load it up and shoot, no thinning required (please read label for more info). I don't recommend top coating metallics, but if you must, use a water based gloss coat. Alclad has their own called Aqua Gloss which is excellent. Good luck!

    Hey - one of the problems with these kinds of paints and metal powders is when you try to put on a clear finish - like Testers clear lacquer, etc., it destroys the chrome look. How would you apply a clear finish?

    • @jiminboo
      @jiminboo  6 лет назад

      GalaxyStranger01 Alclad Aqua Gloss is water based and specially formulated to go over metal finishes. However, applying clear top coat over these finishes will take down some of the natural metal sheen of the paint. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation and instruction on how to apply. Test on a spoon first always to see how your paint and application will react.

    • @GalaxyStranger01
      @GalaxyStranger01 6 лет назад

      Ok, so you're stuck with water based clear finishes and can't apply lacquers/urethanes on top of that.

      I wouldn't recommend it, since these paints aren't meant for anything other than models. Over time the paint holds very well, but chrome paint is delicate to handling and scratching, unless you top coat it. If you do apply top coat, you'll lose some of the natural metal sheen.

      PEDRO Romero Pintado desaforadamente esa es una de las fallas de la pintura cromada. Si aplicas barniz, pierde algo de su resplandor. Yo recomiendo no aplicar barniz ni tocar la pintura después de aplicar. Si absolutamente vez necesario aplicar barniz, recomiendo uno a base de agua como el Aqua Gloss. Aun así, no se verá igual.
