quick question sandy, i've been thinking about getting a snugpak ionosphere but these interest me because of the price, only thing i'm worried about is the waterproofedness. does this need a dose of the fabsil treatment or would you say it's good to go in heavy rain? thanks for any help Rory
Hi Rory, It was borderline waterproof. The hydrostatic head tests are low on this tent. Whenever I used it I did get a tiny amount of dampness inside but this could have been from condensation. The worrying thing is the poles snapped really easily and I no longer use this tent. I therefore cannot recommend it to you. Sandy
Wiltshire Man Thanks a lot for doing this review! Glad I read this, was about to order one. Was considering a highlander blackthorn 1 first but I read those poles break easily as well. It's so hard to find a good one man tent for stealthcamping. :(
Wiltshire Man nice advice! Thanks for that. It's just that I want it low profile and olive drab-ish, because in the Netherlands stealthcamping isn't exactly legal (€90 fine -ex fire of any kind which adds up hundreds) . Kind of sucks living in a country where you can legally buy marijuana in an actual shop, but aren't allowed to do minimal impact wild camping. When I go for nature hikes here I find empty plastic weed bags and stoner staple wrappings (mcdonalds, KFC, domino's, etc) everywhere. I've decided to do a bid on a second-hand but unused gelert solo for €20. It's got really bad 1500hh and is probably every bit as fragile. It's somewhat OD green but that can be fixed with a scrim of some kind. That alfieaesthetics guy said he's been using it for years without fail, for €20 i'll give it a go I and let you know how it holds up. I alwayd carry a ponchotarp in case my tent fails anyway.
I really like it when a product is actually shown being used and tested in the environment it may encounter. Great video, it truly shows the tent's capabilities.
Sandy, I am so glad that you're not like most people who just Copy and Paste their whole purchasing regime. In other words, buy what the advertising and what other people say you should buy. Today, people don't think for themselves nor do they garner real life experience. People are gullible - A tent with a famous name for 300 quid made in China is exactly the wrong kind of tent to buy. All that happens is that a company makes huge profit margins. Anything famous and high priced made in China is a rip off. I watched the whole video through. Thank you.
I tell you, Brits have grit. Whenever I want to see a real extreme test to any outdoor equipment I am considering I can always count on a good test if a Brit has a go at it. This tent is my next outdoor shelter purchase. Thanks.
John once the tent is put together it is rigid and strong, however the poles are fibreglass and they can bend and snap real easy. It's a great shelter just let down by fibreglass poles
@@WiltshireMan So an aluminium pole upgrade would be recommended? I just happen to have an extra set. Those fiberglass poles seemed to hold up pretty good for you in that wind though.
Thank you so much!! I've been eyeing this tent for the best part of a year and I've never been able to find a reliable review of it or a test of it's abilities in bloody awful weather. Delighted to see that it works well, especially given the low price.
Hya Sandy.... I've also got the laser comp... And strangely enough I had a wild weather night in Snowdonia... The central hoop was flexing almost down to my face as I lay in my bag... But it didn't break, and only a couple of Pegs came loose... The little pegs aren't the best, but I still have faith in the tent ... No rips or drips... I really like the look of this recon tent though... Money aside, it just looks well designed and well ventilated ... Best wishes.....J
Well the Miltec arrived and I tested it in the garden once and then up to High Willhays on Saturday 30th Jan for the overnighter. Result in strong winds rain and a bit of snow, great. No rips, seams going and it held out nicely although the door was very noisy. I noticed the same thing with some damp around the edges in the morning. Needs more testing but I'm really pleased with it. Cheers for sharing this.
+Allan Thompson Thanks Allen, I put mine up in the garden for a week during heavy rain. Only a few spots of water got in and nothing to worry about. WE had downpours that week too. So for the money I believe it to be a bargain tent. Sandy
I just ordered one of these and I'm going to use the miltec rip stop rain poncho as a footprint under the tent. Always use a footprint to protect your tent.
Lookin forward to ur adventures this year, more so coz u c it as a adventure as well as a camp.I love strong wind with the rain the sound is beautiful.I envy u on the sound an experince in ur new tent.Atb Lee.
Absolutely brilliant Sandy . Talk about dedication !!!!! Full of admiration at the way you have made this video. Amazing ! Thank you so much for posting.
A friend had one of these tents for years frequently doing bike shows and rallies in all weathers, he loved it, it never let him down, my Terra Nova Solo almost collapsed on me on a winter Dartmoor camp last year, the Recon is of Semi-Geodesic design, very stable in adverse conditions, a full Geodesic tent costs a lot but will never let one down, even on Everest, a good review of the Recon here Sandy, and a very windy one too, have a good New Year mate and stay safe, atb,.
+Neanderthal 62 Hi Paul, I was well impressed with the tents stability in the strong winds. Much better than my Terra Nove Laser. Infact I know the Laser would not have stood up to that. Not even for a minute. Hope it lasts a while. Build quality seems OK though not as good as a Laser. Sandy
Great review Sandy, out in the field. I think the moisture inside the tent could have been condensation but very minimal compared to most tents in extreme conditions with this gem. I tested it also on the West Highland Way,one night the temp dropped to the worst I`ve experienced, everything froze solid including the outer shell of the tent. With both air vents open there was nearly no condensation, with most other tents I have used this would not have been the case. Glad it`s working for you Sandy.I knew you`d give it an honest testing. Good stuff.
+HIKE RUN BIKE BUCK Thanks Kenny for putting me onto this tent. I will be using it a lot in the new year. I like also how stealthy it is especially when you throw over some netting. All the best Sandy
Hi Sandy, full marks for courage for testing a new tent in such horrendous conditions on your own. Here's wishing you and your a Happy and Healthy New year! I look forward to more videos in 2016.
Hi Sandy, What a bargin! I like the geometric dome design(as proven, very good in strong winds). I am walking the West Highland Way in July so I'll look forward to your video\s about the route. I will be making some to! Happy New Year atb Roger
Wow. that was a not windy Sandy, had the winds here as well but we also had really bad rain, so lots of places flooded. Decided to stay indoors instead :-) great vid, and as Eddie said, best to test close to home, also showed the importance of a good head torch
Hi Sandy, hope you enjoy the West Highland Way, im originally from Scotland and have walked the way several times, in each direction. some fantastic scenery if you get decent weather.
This video is one of my favourites of yours. Watch now and then , Think this was one of the first videos I watched of yours.. I have of course watched them all now, use to enjoy you and Ant camping .Liked the one where your tent was destroyed. Any way .Thank you for your content
Always a pleasure to join you on an adventure Sandy! Kenny is a good source of information for he gets out there and puts his gear to the test. I've learned a lot from both of you and are grateful for your videos. Happy New Year! Looking forward to more adventures in 2016. Sincerely, Ossie
+Ossie Weinert There are going to be some good adventures on my channel in the new year Ossie. Thanks for watching. ALl the best for the new year Sandy
Wiltshire man. Thanks to you I ordered a 30 litre dry back pack for 77 Canadian dollars for my kayak or over night pack in have a wonderful day my friend Ed🇨🇦
That tent sure was a long time coming through, geez it took them long enough. It really was blowing last nigh there too, half expected to see some fences down, but nope. Shame you didn't have an anemometer to get a reading on the wind speeds. Bloody impressed how well the new tent coped with the wind.
Happy new year sandy,I enjoy the vids. I lived in Swindon from 1966 till 1978 when we then migrated to Ohio USA. We used to go to many of the places aroung Wiltshire that you film while living there.I retired in 2004 but now do my camping in a trailer, I still have 2 tents though.
+George Lee Hi George. Thanks for the comment. I think Swindon has changed a lot since you lived here but no doubt the surrounding area will still be much the same. I was bought up in Watchfield and Shrivenham but when I got married I couldn't afford to buy a home there so moved to Swindon. Now live in Upper stratton. One day I hope to be able to move away to a more rural location. I feel like a man in exile when in the town.
I worked at the Vickers plant so used to drive through Statton every day.I played football against Watchfield and Shrivenham.I know Swindon has changed a lot as we have been back several times, last visit was 4 years ago.I was talking to an American friend about all the strange ancient ruins around Wilts a couple of nights ago and he said he recently watched a TV show about it.
+George Lee Hi George, As a child I can remember an old Spitfire on display outside one of the Vickers factories just Easy of Sevenhampton. Maybe that is the place at which you once worked? That factory is still there but is now used for storage of agricultural products. There is another old Vickers plant near South Marston and also a sports club called The Vickers Supermarine Club.
Sandy that Spit was made in Sth Marsden It did,nt have the engine in only a wooden mock up.It was taken to head office Millbank tower in London then some of the guys who made it in the 40s complained and it came back to Sth Marsden.
Great review for the miltec, plan taking my little boy camping in summer somewhere in the welsh mountains hopefully in not such extreme weather, been a camper since a kid but it'll be my boys first time.....Great vid.....73
good drills testing new kit in ideal conditions to familiarise your self and to check all parts are present. also pitching pegs at head wind end first if windy - well done sandy, mice pie too lol :) listening to it when quiet windy you might need to tape up some of the zippers as they can be heard dinging all the time. practising first is also an excellent idea - in the reserves we always done the "dry run" mission before the real thing (s.o.p. standard operating procedure) - if you don't and come un-stuck in the real wilderness with no mobile signal etc, it could be disastrous. right again, 2 people died on brecon this year being struck by lightning. very good video - would be interested to see the tent set up in nice weather to go over some points of interest regarding this experience. well done mate - looking forward to doing an overnighter next with you sandy take care
+funkyprepper Hi Darren, Any time you want a camp will be great just let me know. Maybe we could rope Neaderthal in also as he lives close by. Yes I think it is of utmost importance to test resolve, and kit and gain experience close to home. If all goes wrong you can pack up and no one has been hurt but if it goes pear shaped when your in the middle of nowhere you could be in great danger. It really is good practice I believe to go out like this and setup when conditions are far from ideal. All the best for 2016 Sandy
Great practical practice review in the most extreme conditions, it looked like the ultimate test. Happy new year to you & your family. Thanks for taking the time to produce this video top job. ATB Spenny
The weather looked really strong. Maybe the seams weren't sealed properly. Good thing you could get home and not stay wet all night!! Have a wonderful New Year Sandy!!! Hope all are well and safe with your flooding. Our flooding isn't hampering me much since we are on higher ground in our area but the rest of Missouri is getting hammered with flooding. TC ATB Louise
+Louise Florida /Missouri Hi Louise, I have had lots of stormy camps this year and enjoyed it all but there are some folk up country a bit who have really suffered wit homes flooded etc. My heart goes out to them. Here hoping that 2016 will be a good year for us all. TC Sandy
Acquired the 'Recom' tent in multitarn pattern camo. After replacing the fiberglass poles with aluminum poles, and the steel pegs with aluminum pegs, the weight was reduced by just over 1 pound.
I looked at one of these a while ago, the low HH was the reason i finally went with a Robens Starlight 2. Still in saying that i was impressed with how it stood up to that lovely weather you had.
+Archie Young (pagan) I must admit Archie the low HH is a concern, but for the money it was worth the gamble. Everyone who has one is sying good things about it though.
Well would you believe it. I have had this tent for getting towards two years now. Mine is the same but I have a German flak tarven patten to mine. Sort of a blocky green and Browns and blacks. Sure you may have seen it? I've had the tent as I say for a while now and have to confess I've only used it around 7 or 8 times. There was one occasion when I was out by myself and I caught in a very nasty rain storm, started to belt it down. I was some miles from my car and decided to sit out the storm. I found a sheltered spot and pitched up. I have to say my tent didn't let in a drop of rain which I was great full for. Just like you I got a real tree camo net, can't remember the full name of the camo netting but it has like leaf shapes on it. I found this useful as it takes a little bit of the shine of the fabric and hides the tent really well. I used it for some wildlife spotting and it did the trick well. Think I got mine second hand for about £40 on eBay. It's been amazing though.
I was about to buy it once, but I got my polish tee-pee, which I don´t regret. But I will get me one of those, as well. Solid little tent, Sandy! Happy New Year!
Thank you Sir! You went the extra mile to show us this tent and I appreciate it! Very informative video and I see Jess gave it a two paws up! :-) atb Mark in Texas!
Sandy, I've met Kenny (Hike Run Bike Buck) a few times and I know he speaks highly of the Miltec Recon One Tent. I was tempted into buying this tent before, but after watching your video of you using it in a storm, I do think I will buy one now as I need another tent to take my nephew out camping. Good video Sandy. Atb Glenn.
Hi mate thanks for the review :-). One thing though if it had let water in youde of had a mare with a wet doss bag, the answer to this is always take a good bivibag with you then youll never have the situation where your hyperthermic due to sleeping in a soaking wet dossbag mate. Just a pearl of wisdom from my experience mate as you only need to be drenched and spend a while in a constantly wet sleeping bag to know how to suffer. Happy new year mate and thank you again :-)
+garethbkw That is great info Gareth and I will include this sound advice in an upcoming video. Thanks for your input and best wishes for the new year. Sandy
+Noel Adams Happy New Year Noel and Good health to you and yours. Health and happiness comes first and second. Prosperity comes third. The tent seems a bargain and if it lasts a year or two then for 49 quid thats got to be a winner.. My Laser comp would not have stood up to this wind. Sandy
Hi sandy great vid. Looked very cold.i once was wild camping on high ground in a thunder storm. It scared the life out of me I had my eyes closed tightly but could see the flashes of light off the bolts. Lesson learned for me to check the weather . Atb Gordon
+goonluv Haa, That was a close call Gordon. I have also been n high ground and had close calls. Lightening can strike anywhere and has been known to hit objects upto ten miles away from the apparent storm. Also it can strike in the same place multiple times and being in lower ground is not guaranteed to be safe. I guess it's just down to luck. Sandy
Fantastic to hear you are doing the WHW Sandy. I've been considering doing this walk as well, unsupported and wild camping all the way! I've not done anything like it before but it's on my bucket list and I can't get it out of my head! - currently planning to do it in August (along with the midgies). I'll be really interested on how you get on in March and the kit you decide to take - look forward to all your videos, keep them coming!
That is a great review, thanks. I spend a lot of time stealth camping on long distance motorcycle rides and I used a Phoenix Phreerunner EB for many years. A few years ago I replaced it with a Hilleberg Jannu, which cost a fortune. It's a very good tent and has never let me down, but you seem to have found a little gem for about 1/10 of what I paid for the Hilleberg.
+Moto Phoenix Thanks for your comment. Someone else mentioned the Phoenix EB. Hilleberg do make good tents for sure but they are a little expensive for my pockets. ALl the best for 2016 Sandy
different television stations have started naming our winter storms. The national station called this last one Goliath . A local or regional station called the same storm Amber or something. Big system stretched from the Gulf of Mexico to into Canada and all of the way across the continent. They claim that it is effecting weather at the North Pole right now. Hurricanes get named of course but I didnt know other storms were. I'll have to pay more attention to things like that. Maybe they are naming summer storms here too.
I am watching this in Nov, 2022. Your decision to offer constructive criticism where necessary is, IMHO, the right one for the manufacturer and the camper. British Weather can be unpredictable and hazardous even under canvas. Great video, Thank You.
They are still selling this tent with the heavy and weak fibreglass poles which is a shame because it's a great little design let down by poor materials.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, always good to buy something on the back of a recommendation rather than the blurb you get from the maker. As you say don't think you ca beat that price. Thanks again.
The weather when packing your tent down looked brutal, interesting hearing you say that even the expensive tents struggle to hold up as come the new year i'm going to be investing in some ultra light backpacking gear ~Peace~
+Zed Outdoors Buying expensive isn't always buying the best, it can just mean someone is getting fat off the back of a name that was making quality but isn't anymore. A revue like this is worth a million dollars, and can save a million more. :)
+Zed Outdoors Zed, This is a good tent if you are going to experience or there is the risk of severe weather. However it would not be my choice of shelter if I were long distance backpacking and could find a sheltered spot to pitch. Before you spend your money we must talk:)
+Zed Outdoors Hi Zed have a great 2016 , you pay a lot of money to save weight and get apparently stronger gear , cheap materials are heavier and usually more durable. If your hiking a few miles through the woods to camp i don't think you need expensive gear , backpacking 3/4 days over /through hills is a different proposition. Your be glad of any weight saving you can make , it'll be interesting to see what you get , atb Eddie.
Interesting video Sandy as always - the only thing I don't like about that tent (and this is common with lots of tents) - is the fact you have to pitch the inner first - if it is really tipping it down that is far from ideal.now I would always now look for outer first.
Another great video, thank you for this years entertainment. By coincidence somebody has bought me the very same tent for Christmas I am taking it to Snowdonia in February Looking forward to seeing your videos 2016.
+Lance Balzaretti Lance, before you go to Snowdonia make sure you are practiced at putting your tent up in adverse conditions. Be warned Snowdonia can be very wet and windy. A tent can be smashed easily during erection in strong winds
VERY helpful Sandy. I'm looking at get a small tent for a few activities planned in the new year( pack size important to me) and I'm also on a budget so this might just be the ticket. Thank you. Happy New Year to you. Matt.
nice review. thanks. I love my snugpak ionosphere for windy conditions. it doesnt flap in the wind so i can get some sleep but this miltek might be good for cheap tent when I dont want to take my snugpack
the design is great indeed , originally this is an expensive German storm bunker for globetrotters made by Wechsel tents Berlin. The problem is that this is just the chinese made Stum copy, about 200 quids is the difference, they had to save somewhere^^ If you get a set of aluminium poles for 40 and a groundsheet it will be a very good tent, more lightweight and almost as good as the original. due to its shape and size condensation is pretty much the only issue, and it could be worse, as other tents in this range show.
Happy New Year.. Great vid... you made me chuckle saying "You can never have to many tents!!" I keep telling my wife that but shes yet to be convinced lol...
Hard to find fault at that price...And pitching it in such an exposed spot which you probably wouldn't normally do. Nice drop of whisky for such a bleak night too. I'll be having a look at that tent.. Perfect for throwing on a motorbike for a short break. All the best for the New Year... Mark
I have had this tent for about a year now. It let me down on Dartmoor with rain coming in (from a seam at the foot end) during a stormy summer night and one of the poles has broken (the short one). It looks like the fibreglass has delaminated under tension. I have attempted to fix the water ingress by removing the the clip fasteners from the split rings attached to the tent, By doing this i am able to stretch the fly sheet further away from the inner tent. I have not been camping in bad weather since so cannot report if this has been successful or not. Shame because i was very happy with it at first.
+Julian Buckley Hi Julian, Thanks for your info. I am aware of the problems with fibreglass poles. Sorry to hear about water ingress. So far so good with my tent. If anything really negative happens I will video it for all to see:)
+Wiltshire Man Hi Sandy, Yes can happen with any fibreglass poles. Will be replacing it and hope my mod will solve the other problem as i will stick with it as it's a good little tent for the money. Love your youtube stuff btw, the two-parter with zed outdoors on your knife making process was fascinating.
Nice video Sandy. Over the years I have always carried small two man tents and not one man tents. I like the extra room. However I have found the lighter designs to be far from suitable for proper camping in bad conditions. I now have a Bergans 2 man which comes in at 2.5 kilo and I have tested it in 70mph winds in Scotland on a very exposed pitch. I feel once anyone has got over the hype/marketing of weight, then the whole choice is wide open as you are proving.
A proper review, I’m very impressed! You are a very brave man - thank you for the advice about a local overnight test. I am inspired and now thinking about where I can go. ;-D Rachel
Great tent for the money Sandy. Lots of nice features. I must admit I do prefer inner pitch first as you can change it, if you don't like the position. If doing the WHWay in March you might want to give it a top up of waterproof spray, might stop any ingress. I did the WHW along time ago ( 20 years) and the Loch Lomond stretch never ends! left on 1st April and had heavy rain all the way until it changed to snow at Bridge of Orchy and waist deep over the devils staircase! There is no camping bans in Loch Lomond in March ( one of the few areas in Scotland now due to numpties) so you can pick your spots.Think there is now 2 paths at Loch Lomond the lower one is up and down over big tree roots, which is hard work carrying a pack. If I can be of any help with info etc drop me an email. Also did the Caledonian way ( Fort William to Inverness)which is now called Great Glen Way as the Caledonian Way opens this year from Campbellton to Inverness 237 miles. Next one?? Cheers Mary.
recon one . is a great little tent . I've had it outside in rain which we get a lot . wind an sad ta say not snow yet . it went down to -five one night I needed too test myself an my kit. the tent had frost on it but I was ok cold morning that was I tell ya . the one I have is dpm . great for the woods. I'm looking for an other one . I like em thatmuch . if u no of anyone selling one . great video . nice one buddy .
Hi Sandy ! Very interesting Review ant test on the Mil-tec Recon..this tent seems to be very similar to the Eureka TCOP( or ICS) used by the US Forces. The Recon is maybe a good option for small money. Please let me know if u are happy with it (long Therm Test) Greetings and all the best for the new year Harry
+Wiltshire Man yr ecpierences would be very interesting for me..i do a lot of wildlife and bird watching...so a camo tent is essential for me and all the very good camo tents and shelters are horrible expensive...thanks Harry
I ordered one of these tents from Amazon yesterday , in large part due to your recommendation and other video footage on you-tube. I had to pay a bit more to get the camo pattern I wanted.
well sandy it dont get much more testing than that, those tents are a great design, taken i believe from the us army/marine corp one man tent tcop, by diamond brand and eureka, which cost a lot more than your 49 quid, i use the 2 man version usmc tent, which i use most of the time, great tents and really robust, good test, your moisture may well have bee either condensation since it was under the mat or a pin hole in the bathtu material, i think if it had come through the tent itself you would have seen evidence above the mat, but like you say considering the weather thats nothing to worry about! haha, nice one, cheers,
+Colonelchimp, Bushcraft, Survival and Prepping Thanks Colonel. I can live with a little bit of moisteure. If it becomes a problem I will try and sort it but for now I am not too concerned. All the best Sandy
yeah sandy i have had more condensation than that on a nice nice lt alone a gale force storm, and a spray with some fabsil will sort that out in no time im sure, i am glad you did the test as i always wondered about the quality of those tents, as i quite like them, but am always wary of copies, the ua army one is £120 used so you got a bargain there, i may even follow your lead haha
Hi Sandy, great video and interesting little tent that I've been looking at for a little while now. Such an important message about practising skills in a safe environment. I've been known to pitch a new tent in my living room to be able to take time in a comfortable environment to make sure I could put it up and take it down/pack it away properly! Happy New Year to you and your family. ATB Muddy.
+Muddy Paws Thanks Muddy. It is a good idea to practice setup for sure. Just through into the equation though a howling north westerly and it can be a different ball game. My expensive terra nova laser failed to stay up in Snowdonia recently but yet this cheap Recon tent has no problem at all:) Sandy
I saw your Snowdonia vid. Having spent my honeymoon there earlier this year I can see why it failed! I have a wonderful Mountain Hardwear Vipirine 2 tent which is super light and needs testing in some more extreme weather so may be time for me to go somewhere exciting! ATB Muddy.
wow what a video sandy, great stuff, have been looking at them tents for awhile now, they did look good now I know there good ,I have had a few things off camoutdoors , they are good, yes you do wait awhile but then you don't pay p&p so bargain I think, happy new year to you and your family, cheers craig
+Craig Twiner Thanks Craig, I am doing some more testing with this tent now and will post an update video soon. Thanks for watching. Sofar the tent is looking like a really good bargain. Sandy
Amazing video and a very good tent to have withstood that battering. I wonder how well the Polish lavvu would have fared in such weather? Hope your Highland journey goes well.
a nice Little tent there. but tough weather as Always with you haha. i'm looking for a 3 person tent that dont cost both my arms and legs :) me and the wife and our youngest daughter are planing some trips in the spring/ summer. but most tents here in sweden costs 400-800 Pounds it is crazy. have a happy new year my friend!
perfect conditions for a true test Sandy and a bargain at that price regardless of it being a little heavy. Nice job and way to take one for the team. Now hot bath and a glass of brandy me thinks.... Happy NY from Moose down under.
Have a great 2016 Sandy , looks a good tent a bit heavy but doable. Yes exactly right i've been saying that for a few years ( pity no one watches lol ) to practice in safer areas , i used my local hills to camp in winter conditions before heading to the highlands and Cairngorms , wise words again , take care , Eddie. p.s. you can't beat a wee dram
+Scots Wildcamper Eddie, I think it's really important to not only have the right kit but to gain as much experience as you can in a safe environment before venturing out. Glad you picked up on that in the video. So far your the only person to mention it and it perhaps is the most important part of this video too:) Proceed to "Go" and collect £200. Welldone Sandy
Very nice. I hope the new shelter serves you well. Hopefully, by purchasing a new durable tent you'll be assured lots of fair weather outings, haha. Take care Sandy. Hope 2016 is a great year for you.
quick question sandy, i've been thinking about getting a snugpak ionosphere but these interest me because of the price, only thing i'm worried about is the waterproofedness. does this need a dose of the fabsil treatment or would you say it's good to go in heavy rain?
thanks for any help
Rory
Hi Rory,
It was borderline waterproof. The hydrostatic head tests are low on this tent. Whenever I used it I did get a tiny amount of dampness inside but this could have been from condensation. The worrying thing is the poles snapped really easily and I no longer use this tent. I therefore cannot recommend it to you.
Sandy
good man. i'll decide against. think its best to save a bit more for a much better tent really. thanks a lot for that sandy
Wiltshire Man Thanks a lot for doing this review! Glad I read this, was about to order one. Was considering a highlander blackthorn 1 first but I read those poles break easily as well. It's so hard to find a good one man tent for stealthcamping. :(
I know what you mean. Coleman do a tent called the Tatra. It is a two man tent so may be a big big for you but is semi geodesic and affordable.

Anything famous and high priced made in China is a rip off.
I watched the whole video through. Thank you.
+Ade Larsen Thanks Ade. I am gad you enjoyed the video. I think this new tent will be a winner.
Happy new year
Sandy
+Allan Thompson Thanks Allen,
I put mine up in the garden for a week during heavy rain.
+Lee Wood Thanks Lee, you are right. I love the adventure. I love to hear the sound of wind and rain.
+Neanderthal 62 Hi Paul,
I was well impressed with the tents stability in the strong winds. Much better than my Terra Nove Laser. Infact I know the Laser would not have stood up to that. Not even for a minute.
Hope it lasts a while. Build quality seems OK though not as good as a Laser.
Sandy
+Wiltshire Man A good reproofing should sort out the slight ingress, hope it serves you well mate, atb.
That's the tent you need for your open spaces during storms.
All the best

Hi Sandy, full marks for courage for testing a new tent in such horrendous conditions on your own.
Here's wishing you and your a Happy and Healthy New year! I look forward to more videos in 2016.
Hi Sandy,
What a bargin! I like the geometric dome design(as proven, very good in strong winds).
I am walking the West Highland Way in July so I'll look forward to your video\s about the route.
I will be making some to!
Happy New Year
atb Roger
Wow. that was a not windy Sandy, had the winds here as well but we also had really bad rain, so lots of places flooded. Decided to stay indoors instead :-) great vid, and as Eddie said, best to test close to home, also showed the importance of a good head torch
+Yorkie263 Thankyou. Yes a good head torch is one of the most useful tools for these long dark nights
Now that's putting gear to the test -- well done. And great advice you give at the end about danger and responsibility.
Thanks, appreciate you watching and glad you are enjoying the channel :) I remember well my tent being destroyed!
ALl the best for the new year

Wiltshire man. Thanks to you I ordered a 30 litre dry back pack for 77 Canadian dollars for my kayak or over night pack in have a wonderful day my friend Ed🇨🇦
Welldone Ed. I hope to get out myself soon for a camp. There's no camping in the UK currently due to lockdown restrictions
That tent sure was a long time coming through, geez it took them long enough. It really was blowing last nigh there too, half expected to see some fences down, but nope. Shame you didn't have an anemometer to get a reading on the wind speeds. Bloody impressed how well the new tent coped with the wind.
Hi Sandy, I love watching this video. ! Crazy mate, but excellent consumer advice , it dose make me laugh every time I watch it . Top notch.
+George Lee Hi George,
As a child I can remember an old Spitfire on display outside one of the Vickers factories just Easy of Sevenhampton.
BTW When I worked there, I played Cricket and football for Vickers in Sth Marsdon.Great sports and social club.
Sandy, you're an amazing man. Great review. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and ATB for the New Year.
AZP
Now that is a serious tent test. Glad you had the foresight to take some whiskey along. Cheers mate!
Great review for the miltec, plan taking my little boy camping in summer somewhere in the welsh mountains hopefully in not such extreme weather, been a camper since a kid but it'll be my boys first time.....Great vid.....73
good drills testing new kit in ideal conditions to familiarise your self and to check all parts are present.
also pitching pegs at head wind end first if windy - well done sandy, mice pie too lol :)
listening to it when quiet windy you might need to tape up some of the zippers as they can be heard dinging all the time.
practising first is also an excellent idea - in the reserves we always done the "dry run" mission before the real thing (s.o.p. standard operating procedure) - if you don't and come un-stuck in the real wilderness with no mobile signal etc, it could be disastrous.
right again, 2 people died on brecon this year being struck by lightning.
very good video - would be interested to see the tent set up in nice weather to go over some points of interest regarding this experience.
well done mate - looking forward to doing an overnighter next with you sandy
take care
+funkyprepper Hi Darren,
Any time you want a camp will be great just let me know.
All the best for 2016
Sandy
Funny you mention the zips jangling. I'm just thinking of replacing the pulls in mine too.
Great practical practice review in the most extreme conditions, it looked like the ultimate test.
Happy new year to you & your family.
Thanks for taking the time to produce this video top job.

The weather looked really strong. Maybe the seams weren't sealed properly. Good thing you could get home and not stay wet all night!! Have a wonderful New Year Sandy!!! Acquired the 'Recom' tent in multitarn pattern camo. After replacing the fiberglass poles with aluminum poles, and the steel pegs with aluminum pegs, the weight was reduced by just over 1 pound.
Can I please ask where you bought the poles?
Awesome test, shows that not all inexpensive gear is cheap quality. Look forward to seeing the tent in further action. Atb Sandy .
I was about to buy it once, but I got my polish tee-pee, which I don´t regret. But I will get me one of those, as well. Solid little tent, Sandy! Happy New Year!
Great conditions to test out the tent, fantastic job mate, all the best Jimmy
Fantastic video Sandy. Well done for braving the storm , it really is a terrific tent for its price. Happy new year to you.
Thank you Sir! You went the extra mile to show us this tent and I appreciate it! Very informative video and I see Jess gave it a two paws up! :-) atb

"I've come to the conclusion, that you can't have enough tents...I'm sold.
Now that was a GOOD video proper hard core camping thanks for going through that.Happy new year again.
+Rick Green Thanks for watching Rick and happy new year again
Sandy, I've met Kenny (Hike Run Bike Buck) a few times and I know he speaks highly of the Miltec Recon One Tent. I was tempted into buying this tent before, but after watching your video of you using it in a storm, I do think I will buy one now as I need another tent to take my nephew out camping. Good video Sandy. Atb Glenn.
+South-West-Wilderness Thanks Glenn.
For the money it does seem to be unbeatable value. Time will tell, but sofar very happy with my purchase
Sandy

Another Wiltshire Man epic production! What a bargain.
Well done Sandy.
Happy New Year
Noel
+NetWisdom Yes, I will do a kit rundown before I set off and vids along the way. It should be good. We are going to climb Ben Nevis at the end too.
That is what you call a baptism of fire for a new tent, if it has your approval then it must be good.
Yes I used to have one of these. It failed dramatically in Wales for me. Brecon beacons made short work.
ALl the best for 2016
Sandy
+Wiltshire Man Thank you Sandy. Happy new year to you too. Maybe I'll have a go at making a camping video sometime next year.......
Guy
different television stations have started naming our winter storms.
@@WiltshireMan Yes, they could make this a great product quite easily. Thanks Again.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, always good to buy something on the back of a recommendation rather than the blurb you get from the maker. As you say don't think you ca beat that price. Thanks again.
+LFH02 Thats right Oz. Recommendations always win. I was surprised at how well it stood up.

Happy New Year to you and your family Sandy. Thanks for sharing and taking the time weathering the Storm PEACE :-)
+Capt'n Aidy Hi Ade, It was a reall howling gale up there too. All good fun though.
Sandy
Its true what they say Sandy , "practice makes perfect " always best to know your equipment
+Sam “Old Allens” Knight I totally agree with you, I'll not buy an inner pitch one first for that very reason.
The problem is that this is just the chinese made Stum copy, about 200 quids is the difference, they had to save somewhere^^
If you get a set of aluminium poles for 40 and a groundsheet it will be a very good tent, more lightweight and almost as good as the original. due to its shape and size condensation is pretty much the only issue, and it could be worse, as other tents in this range show.
oh youtube, I thought this was a recent video, now I see it's from2015 and you got rid of the bugger^^
Happy New Year.. Great vid... you made me chuckle saying "You can never have to many tents!!" I keep telling my wife that but shes yet to be convinced lol...
Great video and advice! Quite Inspirational - and I just purchased this tent. Thank you for uploading.
Thank you sandy for the wonderful videos and giving me hope again
No worries Raymond. I hope it goes well for you.
Hard to find fault at that price...And pitching it in such an exposed spot which you probably wouldn't normally do.
Nice drop of whisky for such a bleak night too.
I'll be having a look at that tent.. Perfect for throwing on a motorbike for a short break.
All the best for the New Year...
Mark
+stoneman886 Thanks for watching Mark. This tent may well be a good idea for the Brecons.
Sandy
Yes you may be right there...
Yay I have a miltec recon in Flectarn love these tents :)
Yep I use one of these, a great tent! Thanks for a great video ! Keep em coming Sir.
Nice weather you got there :) Good to see that the tent was up for the task.
Thanks for sharing - Martin
+NorwegianWoods Thanks Martin. Yes it was well up to the task. I think it could have weathered even heavier winds.
All the best Sandy

Hi! Sandy.Nice video and also lots of your experience passed on.Thankyou Be Blessed
A proper review, I’m very impressed! You are a very brave man - thank you for the advice about a local overnight test. I am inspired and now thinking about where I can go. ;-D Rachel
Great video & thanks for ensuring that to make this video ! Have a very Happy New Year!
Well done Sandy!
recon one . is a great little tent . I've had it outside in rain which we get a lot . wind an sad ta say not snow yet . it went down to -five one night I needed too test myself an my kit. the tent had frost on it but I was ok

Hi Sandy ! Very interesting Review ant test on the Mil-tec Recon..this tent seems to be very similar to the Eureka TCOP( or ICS) used by the US Forces. The Recon is maybe a good option for small money. Please let me know if u are happy with it (long Therm Test) Greetings and all the best for the new year

+Highland Wanderer Hi Harry. I have only heard good things so far. I will do a longer term revue in the future. Thanks for watching
Becareful with the poles. One of mine has since broke, but for the money it is a good tent.
Sandy
I will , and thanks for the tip :-)
Good vid sandy all the best for the new year Scott
well sandy it dont get much more testing than that, those tents are a great design, taken i believe from the us army/marine corp one man tent tcop, by diamond brand and eureka, which cost a lot more than your 49 quid, i use the 2 man version usmc tent, which i use most of the time, great tents and really robust, good test, your moisture may well have bee either condensation since it was under the mat or a pin hole in the bathtu material, i think if it had come through the tent itself you would have seen evidence above the mat, but like you say considering the weather thats nothing to worry about! haha, nice one, cheers,
+Colonelchimp, Bushcraft, Survival and Prepping Thanks Colonel. I can live with a little bit of moisteure. If it becomes a problem I will try and sort it but for now I am not too concerned.
All the best
Sandy
yeah sandy i have had more condensation than that on a nice nice lt alone a gale force storm, and a spray with some fabsil will sort that out in no time im sure, i am glad you did the test as i always wondered about the quality of those tents, as i quite like them, but am always wary of copies, the ua army one is £120 used so you got a bargain there, i may even follow your lead haha
Great Review Sandy. Interesting. I'll look into this further for my High Willhays overnighter at the end of January.
Great review once again Sandy. I'm looking at one of these to supplement my Dutch Hooped Bivi.
i have thought about buying this tent before, i have seen reviews of it, but i have never seen anyone show it in use in such bad weather.
My expensive terra nova laser failed to stay up in Snowdonia recently but yet this cheap Recon tent has no problem at all:)
Sandy

What a brilliant review. Wish the Pro Action ones were still around
Great video sandy, tent looks fantastic,

Great Vid and Demo of the tent. I have one in flecktarn camo and i love it. I recommend it too. A Great wild Campers Tent
That's a great review, proper road test in savage weather. Thank you.
I got one of these tents too, from the same amazon seller. Worth the wait grait for the money. Comes from Ireland thats why it takes so long to arive.
perfect conditions for a true test Sandy and a bargain at that price regardless of it being a little heavy. Nice job and way to take one for the team. Now hot bath and a glass of brandy me thinks.... Happy NY from Moose down under.
Have a great 2016 Sandy , looks a good tent a bit heavy but doable. Yes exactly right i've been saying that for a few years
( pity no one watches lol ) to practice in safer areas , i used my local hills to camp in winter conditions before heading to the highlands and Cairngorms , wise words again , take care , Eddie.
p.s. you can't beat a wee dram
+Scots Wildcamper Eddie, I think it's really important to not only have the right kit but to gain as much experience as you can in a safe environment before venturing out.
Glad you picked up on that in the video. So far your the only person to mention it and it perhaps is the most important part of this video too:)
Proceed to "Go" and collect £200.

Very nice. I hope the new shelter serves you well. Hopefully, by purchasing a new durable tent you'll be assured lots of fair weather outings, haha. Take care Sandy. Hope 2016 is a great year for you.
