    I started watching these videos when I was thinking of joining the Air Force almost 2 years ago. I still watch just because it is still cool to me that you're willing to open up your life for the purpose of helping others. I guess what I'm trying to say is, keep doing what you're doing man. Even the people who watch this for entertainment purposes enjoy it!

      @@lateshiaford305 you can find this stuff on websites. It's depends on how long youve been in and location. But let's just say it's good. That base pay he talked about is pre-tax. Officer is the way to go these days. A Lt. Col with 20 years has a base salary of 7-8k a month. They sure didn't pay officers that way when my dad was in. I think in 1992 as a Lt. Col with 20 years his base salary was about 48k plus housing. I know he was always bothered when he found out some of his enlisted men were on food stamps and working second jobs- that was in the 80s

    • @vesuvyan
      @vesuvyan 6 лет назад +3

      It's about the same, in terms of raw buying power both amounts were worth. 48k in the early 90s is about the as 80k in today's money. It's just how inflation works my guy.

    • @stumpedII
      @stumpedII 6 лет назад

      officers get at least double what enlisted get.. for same time served.. with average promotion rate. and officers do not get dirty as much. and yes any new military family with children qualifies for food stamps.

    AFRH is a "donation" to the Armed Forces Retirement Home. Every enlisted person is eligible to live there (they have 2 locations) in their old age if they have no better options and they need assisted living. The combination of all pay deductions and the share of punitive fine monies they receive is enough to provide for all their residents free of charge. It is not run by the VA.

He never made any food and somehow always made a mess in the kitchen and always getting screwed with dorm inspections. I did receive BAS for 3 months while I did base Honor Guard, I was able to spend about 100-150ish, and eat a ton of food.

      moving u get orders.. you arrainge with the housing office for a date for mover sto come.. they pack everything.. EVERYTHING.. leave adirty cup they will pack it.. then.. it goes into storage somewhere wiating for your phone call at your new housing office to deliver it.. then they deliver it.. and unpack it.. they pack everything inclusing the mess on teh floor. toys etc... the hard part is finding a new house.. and having money to pay for it.. the military does NOT cover your actual expenses for livng off base.. they just give u an allowance that might cover half what actually comes out of your pocket. Soon as you get orders to a new place.. contact that new base's housing authority and get on a waiting list for housing. that date determines the first come first serve order.. so do it FIRST when you get orders.. dont delay a minute. they will then notify you when your on post housing is ready.. you contact housing office and they have the movers drup your stuff off on the day you desire. you don't have to move anything.. they do everything. if housing is not available all commands sponsor and designate a person to sponsor new members.. who should be able to help you out with contacting real estate people or the housing office.. etc.. contact your sponsor and give them your consernces.. they shoudl get back to you promptly. My sponsor found a house for me and had it waitnig for my arrival. There are usually waiting times.. if the time is less than 2 weeks or so you can move into or ask to move into temporary (less than 2 week stay) housing.. which is FULLY furnished. there are waiting lists for that too.. so inquire the second you have orders confirmed. for these new back organizations to take action (like getting your name on a waiting list) they need confirmation of your orders.

    It's really awesome that you guys get a housing and food allowance. We (Canadian Air Force) don't get any of that. One thing i do not understand, If you are single, do you have to live in the shacks (dorms)? or do you have to wait till you hit a certain rank to move out of shacks?

    My base pay is 770 × 2 (E-2 less than a year). BAH is 1515 for the area. BAS is 365. So monthly I get $3420 a month after taxes. Equals out to 41k a year and I haven't even been in a year. This time next year I'll be E-4 over 2. Roughly 1100 per paycheck in base pay. BAH 1515 a month and BAS 365 which will be 51k a year after taxes. It's not a bad paycheck at all. And if you can get your mortgage around 700 a month you'll be banking 800 a month is BAH.

    I know this video is old but you say here and in another video that it's free to eat on base. But they took out $357 a month for you to eat there (whether you ate there or not) so it wasn't free. The other guys who were not eating there were paying approx $357 a month for a service they were not using, so paying double if they were eating out all the time.

      yes your money for off base rations.. is a pittance.. I think i got 3 dollars a day.. try feeding yourself for 3 dollars a day in an industrialized nation. 3 days for a half pound of cheese.. 1.5 days for a stick of peperoni 1 day for pizza sauce.. half a day for a coke.. eat at burger king once a week for that kind of money.. the rest comes out of your pocket. and it's even worse if you live off base and get a housing allowance.. that covers less than your food bill.. and the worst one of all is the uniform allowance.. i probably spent 100x my uniform allownace on uniforms.. keep in mind if the military pays you.. what they are paying you for is probably worth 10x what you get paid.

    BAS is the same across the board for all enlisted that gets BAS. I worked at DFAC, so I never went hungry, ha ,ha. When I lived in the dorms, we had a meal card for DFAC and yes I too, at all 4 meals. Took advantage of that situation. My COLA was a little higher for me cause I was stationed at Ramstein AFB.

    Question would be more so for your wife, but: being in Japan what all types of jobs are available for a military spouse? there is obviously things like baby sitting ,but is there other jobs for civilians on base? or would she have to go off base for a different job?

    Now at some bases in the AF some jobs like security forces, my job, you’ll work hours that make it to where you won’t be able to eat free at the defac so you’ll actually keep your BAS, if you pay for the defac if you are free to go, it’s not that expensive. My job has crazy hours that doesn’t always work for the defac so that’s why I keep BAS. Just in case anyone wants to know

    Was it up to you to be stationed in Okinawa? and can you come back to the states whenever you want? Would be great if you answered this here or on a video.

    • @CulpFiction
      @CulpFiction 9 лет назад

      +Bernie Joa You don't get to choose where you're stationed (you do, however, fill out a "dream sheet" of where you'd like to be stationed, but of course the needs of the military > your personal wishes, so there's no guarantee you'll end up anywhere on your dream sheet). And you don't get to come back whenever you want, if you're talking about living stateside again. It depends on where you're stationed, but some bases you are there for a year or two and sometimes you can extend and opt to stay there longer if you choose. You can take leave whenever you're able to and come home on a vacation whenever you can, but you have to save up your leave, get that leave approved, and of course save up enough to travel home.

    in the mlitary you get pays.. and allowances.. pays are taxable (except in certain circumstances in designated combat zones) and allowances are not.. allowances are to offset specific costs that the members shoudl not have to bear. back in the old days.. circa 1960's .. your pay was made up almost entirely of base pay.. and when you retired.. you got between 50% and 75% of your base pay for life. well that is expensive.. so the military thought about how they could change all that.. so the mliitary came up with a bunch of otehr "pays".. which more and more replaced base pay.. (they couldnt just outright reduce base pay cus they cant have the active duty people starving and homeless) the net result is they got paid the same while active duty.. but the shocker comes when they go to retire.. now base pay only makes up 1/2 to 2/3 your actual pay.. so you retire on 1/2 to 2/3 of your actual pay.. 1/2 of that.. to save even more the navy said no more 50% at 20 years.. instead it would be 40%.. of the already half wrecked figure that survives as base pay from what your active duty net pay was. no fear tho.. they had plenty of mony for congressional pay raises.. and to bail out the banks..

    • @stumpedII
      @stumpedII 6 лет назад

      but that's not all .. back in the old days you got 100% medical for life when you retired.. now you get copays deductables and insurance premiums. and if you try to get healht care as a retiree.. first thing you have to do is get past the insurance army.. that protects all medical treatment facillities from patients. they turn away what they can.. but i hear a few still get thru. 1x in 20 years i go to a mlitary hospital to get an eye exam.. and the civilian insurance people turned me away. so much for any retirement benefits .. i wonder what your current benefits are going to be like in 20 more years.
