This is my reaction to The Crazy American 1866 Proposal to Annex Canada
In this video I react to Canadian history by looking at a moment from 1866 where an American politician raised the idea of annexing Canada.

Not a damned chance !! WE were the UEL, remember - we went north because we chose NOT to secede from the Commonwealth. Highly unlikely we'd have acquiesced to annexation by the US - who've ALWATS had their greedy eyes on our water and other natural resources.

The illustration @2:30 is less than a mile from my house, the Battle of Ridgeway. A friend wrote the definitive book on the Fenian raids. Civil War hardened Irish American troops wanted to seize Canada as a bargaining chip for a free Ireland and the US just assumed Canada would jump at the chance for FREEDOM, LOL, but we already considered ourselves free and happy campers. The Americans thought all of North America should be theirs. The belief was called "Manifest Destiny". I call it arrogance.
The video failed to mention that the US had a policy 54/40 or fight. When they purchased Alaska from Russia they wanted Canada to GIVE them the entire west coast to join Alaska with the NW US. Like that was going to happen. Even the NW US was surveyed and claimed by "Canada" but the UK basically gave away Oregon and Washington. Thank you UK.
British explorers working as fur traders and for the Hudson Bay Company crossed North America by land way before Lewis and Clark but American history books of course inaccurately say otherwise. David Thompson went to a school for the poor and orphaned in London and at 14 was sent to work with the HBC in what became Churchill. He became a surveyor covering @80,000 km on foot or by canoe. He later settled in Montreal, was ripped off by publishers when he tried to write a book and publish his maps and died penniless, even selling his surveying tools. Alexander MacKenzie, a Scottish fur trader, was considered the first man to cross North America in 1793.
Thank goddess this never happened although the Orange Ego likely still harbours dreams of being Czar of North America including Mexico. PULEEEZE! 🙄

    • @flyingbeaver57
      @flyingbeaver57 3 месяца назад

David Thompson is likewise a personal hero, and over many years I have - when possible - walked many of the exploration routes documented in his accounts. His contribution is enormous and almost incalcuable, and his navigation astonishing.
But as to the modern day: Perhaps as a first step, send the U.S. Congress a group of "sample representatives" with one-way tickets and 'exceptional' Visas, allowing participation in House proceedings. Begin with, say, Trudeau & Freeland, Singh, Blanchet, Boissenault and Guilibault (although with a criminal conviction and jail time, the latter may be ineligible). If the Congressional bun fights over the last decade are any indication, the "new representatives" would add views & dimensions to the existing overall jollification. The long-term view of all this overall would depend on which Member of Congress was asked. However, one might expect 'vigorous debate to occur' about matters like a Congressional Carbon Tax or Capital Gains Tax.
I have not been following U.S. politics in close detail recently, but what trickles through suggests this might bring some fresh discussion' for all concerned. For instance, Czar Jagmeet of the American Democratic Party would bring new ideas and foster much debate on matters both domestic and international.

As most others have said, after the American Revolution, most of the loyalists actually moved north to remain under the King. If anything today, Canadians struggle with our own cultural identity because of the overwhelming American influence in arts, entertainment, literature, media and politics. Even in the late 1800`s and early 1900`s there were races for spur rail lines in southern British Columbia as many mines discovered various minerals, ores. The American`s were in competition for their rail lines taking the ore out of Seattle or Portland instead of Vancouver. The Canadian Pacific Railway beat the US to the mining riches and the ores were shipped east and west through Canada. The Kettle Valley Railway ran till 1964. Many other smaller lines connected mines to the KVR.

The same goes with BC Alberta and Saskatchewan. Those three provinces have been wanting more representation in Ontario or alternatly become their own country. That debat is still ongoing. Who knows how it will turn out.

Canada had a lot of policies early on to encourage people to move into the western part of the country. I don't think that would have been a priority if this territory were part of the US. After all the policy was aimed at ensuring Canadian sovereignty. Americans were encroaching into parts of Canada. Look up fort Whoop-Up. 'Fort Whoop-Up was the earliest and most notorious of the "whisky forts" built by Americans on Canadian soil.'

Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Montreal and Ottawa would have remained small cities, since they basically duplicate functions already carried out by U.S. cities. The Transcanada Railway and Transcanada Pipeline would never have been built. Nova Scotia and Canada west of Ontario would be much more similar to the states to the south. Only Ontario, Quebec and French New Brunswick would be recognizable.

In addition, our sovereignty is not up for debate, whether serious or frivolous. When you live in nearly paradise why would you opt for hell? As a constitutional, democratic monarchy, we enjoy rights and privileges US citizens are not even aware they are lacking.

Just a little history lesson for you. USA tends to lose wars they fight on their own, especially when it comes to fighting places that are spread out across the land. I mean, they couldn't even get the job done in Canada the first two times they tried. It doesn't matter when it was, America had greater numbers of troops, and couldn't handle the small amount of "Canadians."
Americans also couldn't successfully create a ceasefire in Vietnam, and they had to run away from that 19-year war, with their tails tucked between their legs. They literally ran for their lives, getting plucked up by helicopters off the roof of a building at the end. That was less than 50 years ago. They ran from that war. Don't you know these well-known facts?
A very similar thing happened in Afghanistan with that 10-year war. The Taliban owned that war, and the Americans ran away tails tucked once again, leaving behind many Americans to fend for themselves for a second time. Do you forget this? These last two examples are recent wars, against smaller sized countries, that didn't have nearly as much backing as Canada would in a war against the un-United States of Dumberica. The world would rally behind peaceful Canada and not have anything to do with bullshit American bullying.
You might want to watch out. If the rest of the world starts realising the pattern, Americans might soon be in trouble. I wouldn't want to be known as the military force who runs away from conflicts they are trying to solve by force. That would be embarrassing as all hell to live with! Especially if I was part of a country that portrays itself as the powerhouse that America thinks it is.
If you want to do something productive as a country, stop trying to police the world. You want to actually police the world, stop running away from every conflict you get involved with. It makes the country look as weak and unqualified for the job, as it is for the job. Seriously, look up American conflicts and see how many they've lost. Because I guarantee you think Americans have never lost a war, which is ridiculous even when you're looking at American history books.

A story passed down in my family talks about Americans as evil. During the 1776 insurrection, an event happened where a woman was burnt at the stake, and her children tied to a barrel of gun powder and detonated. Members of my family helped with the aftermath. The story was so repugnant it has been recorded and told over and over. The woman was the child of a US general. She and her husband chose to side with the Britsh. The dad did not like this and chose to terminate that whole family. The husband only survived because he was fighting for the British and not home. This story has been passed down so no one in the family would let their guard down when it came to Americans. This event by the by is documented, and the reports by the witnesses and townspeople are recorded at the Canada War Museum. Side note, my father cut my sister out of his life when she moved to the US. They never spoke for 22 years before he died. The story and its cautionary tale hold huge sway in my family. Besides all this, we are monarchist and support our crown and country.

Can you imagine how insane things would be if all of North America were all American? Population would be near a billion, for sure. Those Great lakes would be all in bottles.

Currently there's a strong movement in the province of Alberta to secede from Canada and join with the USA. In your dreams Alberta. One wonders if there's serious coin coming from the USA to help in the process. Be vigilant Canada.

This is an idea that many, many American politicians were obsessed with right into the 20th century, contrary to what the author of this video concludes, and what many Canadians actually believe. There were, in fact, Canadian federal politicians and business people who wanted to be annexed by the US at the time of confederation. The entire idea behind the Northern Pacific railroad in the US was predicated upon it being a useful industrial project for annexing western Canada, and with the West in the American union the East would then have no choice but to join the US, as well. Moreover, Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister, was nothing more than a British imperial style politician and opportunist, and literally wrote that he wanted to turn the West into colonies to be administered from Ottawa. That is all Macdonald and every other Conservative party politician saw the country as being; an imperial project for the dominance of Ontario and Quebec industrialists. Liberal party politicians were little different. Ninety nine percent of Canadians don't know this and have never even heard of this, so they think that Canada was always supposed to be some sort of perfect alternative to the US, but it was never envisioned that way and has not turned out to be that way even in 2024. Sorry my fellow Canadians but you are pretty clueless about the history of your own country or how it really works to this day. 👀🤷😯😠

@@billfarley9167 Which part was that Bill? I think I was perfectly fair in everything I said. Most people think Macdonald was a wonderful, far-sighted patriot when he was anything but. There is an easily made case that he was guilty of treason when he did not concede that the Northern Pacific investors had outmanoeuvred him and inform Parliament that he had been dishonest in not doing so. Canada is run to this day almost solely for the benefit of Ontario and Quebec, something anyone who is not stupid or wilfully blind can easily see.
