It's normal for people's taste to change as we age. My fave series now are Nana by Ai Yazawa (Shojo romance & rock n roll) ; Wandance by Coffee (shonen hip hop dancing), Blue Box by Kouji Miura (sports & romance), Yakuza Fiance by Asuka Konishi (romantic crime drama), and Oshi no Ko by Aka Akasaka & Mengo Yokoyari (no idea what genre). Variety is the spice of life.
Oshi no Koi is a Seinen drama (similar to Nana on the idol/entertainment industry, but different demographic)
This reminds me of when I was back in school I introduced my friend to manga. Started him off on Opm and Naruto and he swore up and down he only wanted to read more “punchy punchy and no kissy kissy” basically he only wanted the action then he got interested when he saw me reading Nisekoi and next thing you know as long as it’s a manga he’s fine with it. Diversity is definitely the key when it comes to reading manga and it’s part of the reason why I haven’t fallen out of love collecting it and reading it there’s just so much to explore.
I've noticed that my taste in manga has changed slightly. I feel like that just tends to happen as you read a lot and you find new genres or stories that interest you!
Absolutely and you’ve been a big help for me, with me following you on IG and seeing your posts has definitely helped me notice series I might not have seen otherwise, So I just wanted to say Thank You! 😊
@@DanielPeppers That makes me so happy!! I’m always glad to help! 🫶🏼💕
ladies go through the same thing when they realise they don't want to read Young Adult fiction forever, they still love the shlock of twilight, but reading their 37th twilight style story in a row you see every single trope imaginable.
manga boys get the same thing when they finally read a real book or something like Watchmen
This was one of my favorite videos I have seen from you. It was SO relatable for me. I grew up on action Shonen series (Yu-Gi-Oh, Dragon Ball Z, etc…). That is what made me love anime, but now that I have gotten older, I have found myself gravitating more towards other genres, like romance, slice of life, and drama. (Ex- Domestic Girlfriend, Citrus, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Dangers In My Heart, etc…..).
If I could go back in time and tell my younger self what books/anime I enjoy now, my younger self probably wouldn’t believe me. But, in my experience, as I have gotten older and had to handle more stress (like having a job, paying bills, etc…. You know - adult things), I have gravitated more towards slice of life, romance, etc. It just makes it easy for me to de-stress, and I enjoy seeing plot points/types of character development/progression that I never really saw in Battle Shonen series.
Yes, from time to time, I still enjoy battle Shonen series (example - I am currently watching through Jujutsu Kaisen, and I am LOVING IT. It has been such a fun watch), but it isn’t what I immediately feel drawn to anymore… and that’s okay. As we grow older, we have more experiences, and we change. I think it is okay to branch out to different genres if the genres you have been used to aren’t really doing it for you anymore :)
Absolutely! This is exactly how I’ve been feeling lately! It’s so awesome to read that this video connected with someone, I was really nervous it might come off as negative which is not what I intended.
I'm glad that we have creators like you helping to encourage people to read outside of the most popular and trendy series. There are so many good stories out there that people just don't know about maybe because it's shoujo, or it's niche, or it's not their typical genre. I'm also glad more people like you are encouraging people to try more seinen and josei cause apparently a lot of people don't know about those???
I am also a Silver Spoon lover!
I feel you on the action shonen. I was originally drawn into Manga and Anime by stuff like JoJo, Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer and Dragon Ball. I feel like those stories kind of lose their appeal a little bit when the stories all feel so similar.
Recently, I've been reading some other things like josei, slice of life and alternative manga and it has made me feel refreshed. Some of the releases from Drawn and Quarterly of older, more niche series are great and more people should give them a chance
Do you have any recommendations for lesser known stuff that you have really been liking lately?
@@DanielPeppers for Drawn and Quarterly I really liked the collections by Yoshiharu Tsuge. They were very strange but very interesting and were like nothing I've ever read before. Also, Talk to my Back is a very good story of a woman explaining her frustrations as a house wife.
The Music Of Marie which is by the same mangaka who wrote No Longer Human and Genkaku Picasso was pretty good and it is printed in and all in one Omnibus by One Peace Books. I have also read through Hinamatsuri which was really great!
@Stevechiefs I’ll definitely have to look into a few of those collections because I don’t know much about them and give them a read, Thanks for the recommendations
What an introspective video, i totally agree.
Battle royale and gantz were the first 2 manga I read. And monster and hikaru no go were the first 2 anime I watched. So I never changed I had great taste from the start.
This was azumanga daioh for me. It was the anime and not the manga but a friend gave it to me in the early 2000s after we got out of high school and I thought it was incredibly stupid after watching the first episode. I didn't understand why he gave me a series about a bunch of high school girls. The following day I ended up putting the DVD back in and started watching it again because I was oddly intrigued by watching it. I ended up binging the entire series. It made me reflect on Old series that I had loved and I realized I liked the non combat parts of series like yu yu hakusho, cowboy bebop, outlaw star. Azumanga daioh was my awakening series. I now own nearly every anime and manga printing in existence. It's a very special series for me
I definitely think that our tastes change over time and sometimes we go through phases like a cycle. I used to read nothing but YA fantasy books but now the majority of my reading is made up of horror and manga. But there will be times where I still crave a fantasy. With manga shonen makes up the vast majority of my reading but recently, since I started watching yourself and more manga content creators, I've been branching out in what I'm adding to my list. It's definitely important to have variety because that helps keep things fresh!!
This videos relatable when reading so much of a genra change is necissarry. I went from dbz, My Hero to burning out takeing a break for a few weeks. Then read Way of the house husband or sports series even more mature manga. Life and taste change.
Just found a new love for a couple shonen series myself. Mission Yozakura Family and Akane Banashi
I myself discovered Yumi Tamura's work and haven't looked back. Basara, Chicago, Don't Call it Mystery, all great stuff!
Personally for me instead falling out of love it's more of expanding preferences
I've been making a conscientious effort to explore more chicken alfredo with my steak and lobster. Great to see you are too
I fell out of love with the superhero genre in highschool when I collected American comics. I also think Shonen Jump manga is for kids as it works like Saturday morning cartoons by the way it’s made.
It's more for early teens/middle schoolers; but yes, generally speaking, with few notable exceptions, it's not something that an adult will find super stimulating.
Shounen Jump is totally aimed at teens, though I wouldn't go as far as calling it for kids, but anyway, still a very large majority of adults up to their 30's are enjoying them. And I would imagine, you can find some a bit more well written and mature series, even in Shounen Jump.
@@BlekDimon No because Shonen Jump is based purely on surveys as to what does well and what continues to be in print. And the majority of those people are kids. Adults who may read Shonen Jump don't send in surveys.
@@Rorschachqp Yeah, I know, but still, you saying kids is a bit weird, I have a hard time imagining 8 year olds reading some of the brutal shounen jump series, if anything, I would say it's mostly teens in the range of 12-18.
@@BlekDimon Don't judge Japanese by the standards of other cultures.
Love your channel Daniel to be fully honest for me it’s a lot me complicated I have what’s called an “executive disorder” apparently I push back doing things I enjoy but once I end up doing those things I have an absolute blast and remember my love for example for manga for example beginning of this year I randomly finally started Witch Hat Atelier and I absolutely loved it and I wanted to read it but now that I want to read it I keep putting it off? Despite knowing when I start that I will enjoy it
Feel like this was Tonkotsu Ramen for the Soul vibes. What a poignant video topic with such a kind approach to the growing pangs of evolving preferences towards a hobby.
I believe there’s nothing with change in reading habits 📚
Slice of life and romance you can't binge read, those are just reading a volume per week or something
But shonen adventure stuff you can mostly binge, now the aspects of most action adventure manga i enjoy is the world building and characters, especially with long term shonen you get so many twists and turns, not true for every titles, but yes even some lesser known ones lile blue exorcist,d gray man, psyren, twin star exorcists,itsuwaributo-those arw great binge reads
But the ones i like most are sports genre
I agree with you and I definitely agree I think the sweet spot for me with Shonen Titles are the Sports genre, That's why I've been saving up Slam Dunk for a binge read some day because I think I'm really going to love it
Such a great video!!! (Also I was hungry by the end of this video! LOL!) It's interesting because I'm doing the opposite that for so long I've read only shoujo that I'm rediscovering my love for shonen and with that that its not ALL battle shonen. I don't mind watching it, but for some reading it is a big struggle, but I came across a few gems and I'm like I MUST have this. I think the variety in my reading has made me happier with my manga reading, so thanks for sharing how you felt!
Thank You!!! And sorry for making you hungry 😂…That’s awesome, yeah I think people for some reason have this idea that it has to be one side or the other or stick to one genre but I’ve been enjoying this Hobby Soooo much more when I am just picking up series that interests me and not thinking about what genre it falls into
I recommend the following manga.
Nodame Cantabile (music)
Piano Forest (piano)
Hikaru no Go (Go)
Cooking Papa (cooking)
Yotsubato! (Daily life)
Barakamon (Daiky life)
Read enough Shojo and you will soon get tired of the seeing the same tropes over and over as well.. Variety is key
I obviously started reading/watching with a lot of simple action series and shounens. Not like I didn't watch anything else, I watched romance, slice of life and psychological series from time to time, but it was maybe only like 20% of what I consumed. Now, recently, I started to branch out a little more, I have been getting a lot into Seinens, mostly psychological stuff and I try Shoujo and Josei. A lot of those made it into my favourites animanga, hell, I once thought out about my top4 anime and 3 of them are Seinens and one is a Shounen (One Piece).
Anyway, some of the stuff I recently watched/read and loved, and would totally recommend are:
-Girls Last Tour - Seinen, Slice of Life. I would personally advise starting with anime since the atmosphere is amazing and continuing later with the manga, but do as you prefer, it's amazing no matter how you consume it.
-Chihayafuru - Josei, Sports, Slice of Life. I'm not vibing as much with the manga as I did with the anime, but the characters in this series, are still incredibly well written.
-Frieren - Shounen (though I would consider it a Seinen), Adventure. You are probably aware of this series, but it's a great philosophical journey.
-Three Days of Happiness - Shounen? (it's totally a Seinen, characters are literally in their 20's, no idea what happend), Light Novel. Well, this one has a manga adaptation, but I decided to read the LN and ohhh boy, it's something indeed.
There's many more to mention, obviously, but I also wanted to point out any of Shuuzou Oshimi works. Altough most of them are tagged as shounens, they cover a lot of weird and sensitive topics. So far I have only read The Flowers of Evil and Welcome Back, Alice, but both of them were really good I want to check out more.
As for works that are anime only, that I would recommend because I love them:
-OddTaxi
-Sonny Boy
-Princess Tutu
and maybe even something like Revue Starlight or Ojamajo Doremi (which I'm still going thru, as it has 200 episodes)
It happens 🎉
My problem comes in when i start looking at my collection and start questioning myself on how much longer am i gonna keep this up. My mind start going places, but then I read a new series vol one or a vol to a series i already own, and my passion gets reignited. Like tomahawk angle or UnOrdinary manwha, just make me fall right back into the whole😂😂😂
You don't need to constrain yourself to just one manga genre, that's what makes manga fun, the fact that there's so many flavors from sports to slice-of-life, seinen and everything in between. I hope you find more manga to pass your time, and if you get tired of manga as a whole you can always take a break anytime. I'm surprised you managed to have fun off of just Shonen for so long, and I'm glad you enjoyed them a lot in that time.
Burnout? As a reader of non-graphic novels as well as manga I make sure that, for the most part, I don’t read the same genre at the same time/one after the other. I may binge a shorter manga series like Alice in Borderland but then read Silverspoon followed by Zom 100
I thought of this after leaving my first comment, but I have a suggestion for your future videos - there are times in this video (example - 36 seconds in) where you show manga panels on screen, without stating what series that they are from. In instances like that, maybe you could leave a small note on screen, letting us know what the title of the series is, or maybe you can leave timestamps in the description, which let us know when you showed panels for series that you didn’t specifically name in the video.
That way, if we see panels that get us interested in a series, we would know what series the panels are from :)
Oh that’s a GREAT IDEA! I will definitely try my best to do that for Future Videos Thank You
@@DanielPeppers You’re welcome!! :)
Totally get this! Shonen is strange though because while I can be like "I don't really want to follow the new Naruto or Fairy Tail" I find myself seeking out the ones that aren't afraid to be different like Black Butler or To Your Eternity. That's why I've always kind of hated/completely ignored genre labels and just jump into things blindly.
Series that are more on the slice of life side are what got me into anime and I think it's such a shame so many people dismiss it, ESPECIALLY if you're someone from the west. Of course they'll have different tropes and they'll feel different, but you can still find a ton of big action, adventures, or dramatic stories in western media. But something that's like slice of life? Good luck finding anything lol. It's just so unique and specific to anime and manga.
On a side note, did you end up eating steak and lobster or chicken pasta after recording this video? 🤣
No I ended up getting a burger and let me tell you after talking about Steak and Lobster...a bit of a disappointment hahaha
This is actually impressive
There are dozen of thousands of shounen manga series out there including the mature ones and you're feeling this way
I mean i can understand if what you meant is Battle Shonen Manga
Sumire 16 sai is peak slice of life
Did you end up reading Fruits Basket? It was one of my early faves ☺️
Wouldnt catch me. I like all genres and denographics though,
Fell out of love with battle shonen a long time ago. These days I prefer romance or romcom. Still love yuri tho
While I share what other commenters have said here that people grow and tastes change, I would have to add that trends are moving certain genres in some directions they didn't use to go into and maybe not giving people the experiences they used to. I loved shounen because the first half was all about introducing characters and the way they related to each other and why they acted the way they did but then a certain Ninja themed shounen became a hit and now a fight that might have lasted a month to three can last for ten years with some plot in the middle that goes nowhere and that is starting to become a trend, and since I like interpersonal relationships and not the punching, I'm leaving shounen behind. Same happened to shoujo, I can't say who started the trend but now the lead having friends (like characters who are friends and not just background characters) and not just romantic interests is optional and it is quite disconcerting considering manga of the past. So I'm avoiding shoujo as well. I could say that maybe being older makes it easier for us to not tolerate the new trends because they are not fullfilling the parts that made the genre as enjoyable as it used to, while in the past we could cling to a series in hopes it got "better" not realizing it's not "better" it's a different niche?
I think it's only natural to grow tired of one genre when you're hyper-focused on it for so long. These last few years I've hardly picked up any action/battle shounen because of the mainstream being filled with it most of the time, and it's mostly focused on young boys/teenagers, so... I kinda want to read stuff that relates more to my age.
Shoujo is sadly underlooked for not being commonly known for its action/battle mangas within the demographic too, even though it's just as diverse as shounen/seinen, and god forbid if you like the same stuff girls like, i guess. I always liked shoujo without realizing it, but for a good chunk of my life I tried to exclusively lean into shounen/seinen because of perceived popularity and diversity, even though it was only wishful thinking. These last few years I've been reading more shoujo and have found some of my new favorites because of that.
My thing is 2000s rock, my favorite were sum 41 and blink 182. Then was introduced to Nirvana..and never looked we back.
I recently went back to Nirvana......THEY SUCK😂😂😂 but blink 182 and sum 41 are GREAT.
With drums or guitar you just have to give some space and then come back
Once I got really into seinen manga it was almost impossible for me to get into any shonen anime or manga anymore because they all felt so dumb, unsatisfying and shallow in comparison. There are exceptions though, of course. I really like Attack on Titan, Claymore, Fist of the North Star, Death Note, Chainsaw Man, Hell's Paradise, etc.
Dude have you read 100 kanojo
It is actually very good just try it
First off Shonen is not a genre. Action , as you referenced, is still too general I think specifically you're talking battle-action/shonen battle manga. There are plenty of SoL, adventure, sports, etc shonen. I don't want to sound harsh by my next statement but you look to be late 20s early 30s while the shonen target demographic is boys to young adult male. Growing out of mostly just shonen target demo is just a fact of life.
Shonen isn't really a genre. It's a demographic aimed towards teenage boys and male young adults. It's a label used mainly by magazines to collect series that have similar themes and tropes for the intended demographic to enjoy. Basically, it's a marketing thing. As guys in Japan age, it's normal for avid manga fans to fall out of love for shonen and move to more mature seinen magazines.
I dropped CoroCoro comics at about 10 in favor of Shonen Jump, then dropped the magazine at around 20 for seinen (except for One Piece). Memory is hazy, but Bokurano, Gunslinger Girls, or Blame! were the ones that really popped the seinen cherry for me.
Nowadays, I like stuff by Umezz Kazuo (My Name is Shingo), Yamamoto Kenji (trash.), Tsukushi Akihito (Made in Abyss), Matsumoto Jiro (Joshi Kouhei), Ohnishi Koichi (Dvici Valka), Hayashida Q (Dai Dark), Nishijima Daisuke (Dien Bien Phu), Asano Inio (Mujina into the Deep), Atsushi Kaneko (Deathco), Maruo Suehiro (The Caterpillar).
I've grown out of shonen manga for a few years now. I can't handle the constant screaming, characters making stupid decisions so the plot can move... and i've read hundreds of shonen manga by now
I'm currently rewatching One Piece with my sister and man... that think is painful, and one piece is my favorite manga for like, 15 years lmao
I hated mystery stuff. All I'm reading now is mystery
If you've seen 3-4 shonen you've seen them all, the people who started on Dragon Ball tournament arcs fell off by the end of Yu Yu Hakusho's and never made it to the chunin exams in naruto, the people who started on Yugioh/Beyblades didn't stick around to see Card Fight, the people who watched Naruto were doing double takes when they saw Jutsu Kaisen.
As with all J-pop culture it comes and goes with the breeze and is incredibly itterative on itself, idk how these 'hype beast' youtube channels dedicated soley to watching every single shonen anime and talking about how hype every single one is manage to make it out of the first year
If you are talking about battle shounens, then yes, they tend to be quite similar, though I wouldn't go as far as saying something that seeing 3-4 is enough and you can't find anything else that's different. Just an example, One Piece, Beelzebub, Hunter x Hunter and most of JoJo parts, all of them are battle shounens, but... They still are different enough from each other and unique in it's own way.
@@BlekDimon idk man, they're all different enough but throughout my life my jojo fan friends basically only read jojo, my hxh friends basically watched nothing the whole way through between old HxH and the new HxH coming out
One Piece is basically like Yotsuba/Detective Conan at this point, checking in every few weeks or months to see what they're up to
I'm sure there are manga die hards the same way there are 'young adult' book reader die hard girlies who literally only read YA fiction in their 30s while complaining about every trope under the sun, I just don't think its the standard experience, the group of teens going to a comicon or anime convention at 13-15 aren't going there at 30 with the same fervor with the same group of friends because everyone moves on "whats attack on titan, is it like dragon ball?"
My gym is filled to the brim with men in their 30s-40s in Goku-Vegeta gym clothes who haven't seen an anime since they were 10 and couldn't point naruto out in a lineup
@@ChichiNaka Animanga, like everything, can be boring after years and years of watching, that's kinda obvious, not exactly sure what that has to do with anything I said. And obviously there is many different types of people, some might have only watched anime for a year, seen like 5 of them and never picked it again anything new, but they still love what they have seen and there are people who will just watch/read anything for many many years, no matter the genre, as long it can be enjoyable, but even for them burnout comes along. I have a friend that binged a lot of anime and manga in 10 years, even some of the most obscure shit and nowadays she just dosen't stick with animanga, though she binges now a lot of korean and chinese things.
