    How exactly does James Blunt qualify as a one-hit wonder? Must be a US thing, as he was massively successful here in Europe even if "You're beautiful" remains his only #1 hit in the UK and US. However he sold more than 6 million albums after Back to Bedlam and had #1 hits in other European countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The three following albums after "Back to Bedlam" were all #1 albums again in various constellations in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Canada and France.

      As an American I really liked "1973". It would have been a better "one-hit" than that sappy commercial love-ballad "You're Beautiful" (I think J Blunt himself hates the song, too)... Radio was saturated with corporate love ballads by that time and it was getting tiresome.

    • @brantdixon3258
      @brantdixon3258 Год назад +7

      Well I don’t think it’s an American thing, I think it’s a WatchMojo thing, because they also put Hoobastank on here that had pretty popular songs such as “Crawling in the Dark” “Out of Control” “Running Away” as well as putting Owl City on here and then even pointing out they had popular hits after “Fireflies”. I just think WatchMojo doesn’t know what “One Hit Wonder” means

    I've never really liked the title of "one-hit wonder" because a lot of artists tend to have some really good songs that still do well, but just were overshadowed by their major hit. Estelle had a song called "Thank You" that did really well on the r&b charts for months. Vanessa Carlton had the song "Ordinary Day" that was another really good song.

If you live within your means, play nice enough with your fans and the the industry in general, and can find that ubiquitous moment, you can stick for a long time. There is so much music between live events and streaming now days, that once you get famous, you can usually find a way to parlay it into a sustainable career.
    What would be ever more shocking to people is the large amount of artists and bands that have successful lucrative careers and would be considered no hit wonders, meaning most people have NEVER heard of them or their music.

    tATu was a one hit wonder in the US for their debut song "All The Things She Said" in 2002 where they were known for being the 2 Russian teens kissing in the rain in school girl outfits.
    After that they sort of faded away here. But they were still huge in Asia , South America, and Europe. They had 3 studio albums in English, 3 in Russian. Lena (the redhead) had 3 more studio albums solo. 1 in English, 1 in both English & Russian , & 1 in Spanish. She also had a live album. Julia (the brunette) had a lot of health issues so she stopped for a while after 2011, and then she did some singles in English and Russian and now does something in politics (idk). They both came back together to perform at the Sochi Olympics and I think they are doing something together again this year.
    They should be on this list.

      @@ajsgaming83 Not in the United States. Not Gonna Get Us attempted to make a hit in the US but it never did. They even tried by performing it at the MTV movie awards but it never made "hit" status. And All About Us , though recorded and filmed in California was never marketed towards an American audience. So for the United States they are considered a One Hit Wonder since that is their only hit here.

      Tatu hit #1 on the dance charts with Not Gonna Get Us. All the things she said peaked at 20 on hot 100. The title track off all about us didn't even break top 10 on the dance charts. But when talking about a pre streaming music environment (everyone was pirating it if they heard it on the radio or saw the music video) those genre charts tell a bigger picture. And it was trackable, unlike tiktok blink and you missed it trends now.
      I will say that All about Us was not a solid album, even as joke background noise.

    • @christina-m
      @christina-m Год назад +1

      @@reverendrevolver6341 All About Us wasn't an album. It was a song by the Veronicas that tATu did a cover of. It was the first song of their second album "Dangerous and Moving". The reason that album sounds awful is because one of the girls , Julia, had throat cancer and when they removed the tumor it damaged her vocal cords.
      All the things She Said was a cultural phenomenon at the time because everyone was freaking out about 2 Russian teen girls in catholic school girl outfits kissing in the rain. The song may not have peeked as high as Not Gonna Get Us but more people know ATTSS over NGGU due to the cultural impact at the time it was released.

    Strange that you didn't include Gary Numan, a one-hit wonder (outside of the UK) that single-handedly popularized New Wave music with his worldwide hit "Cars". He's now been recording and releasing albums for nearly 45 years and has 22 albums, and still tours all over North America and Western Europe.

    Hoobastank is absolutely NOT a one hit wonder. The Reason is their second album. You even mintion their self-titled first album that reached number 1 on the US Heatseekers Albums and 25 on the Billboard 200 and 8 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums. Their first single Crawling in the Dark was at the time just as popular and played as The Reason. It reached 7 on the US Mainstream Rock, 3 on US Alternative Airplay, and 4 on UK Rock & Metal. So take it from someone who lived through it and was into the genre at the time. The band is not a one hit wonder.

      I think they're referring to Billboard top 40, and if that's the parameter, then they didn't. Crawling In The Dark and Running Away did well on the Rock charts but both missed the top 40 over-all charts. Same Direction also only charted on the Rock charts so anyone who doesn't actively listen to rock won't know those songs, which is unfortunate. They're all better than The Reason.

      Here's some food for thought: if one goes by the "Billboard Top 40" hits alone, then that would technically make Jimi Hendrix a one-hit wonder, because the only song of his to hit the "Billboard Top 40" was "All Along the Watchtower."

    I think it's fair to say that the comments are a reflection of the fact that over time memories fade so that even very successful artists with lots of hits sometimes get their best remembered song played more often and so people who weren't around during their initial phase of success might think they only had the one hit. Soft Cell and James Blunt being prime examples. Also some people move on from one hit that they had with one outfit and have others MARRS being an example of that. So not really a one hit wonder in spite of the name changing.
