Love love love The Cementery of Forgotten book series, finished it this year. Zafón is an amazing writer. His YA novels are worth reading too but this series in particular just made Zafón one of my favorite writers of all time.

I am so happy you finally read 'The Shadow of the Wind'! I always had a feeling you would love it as much as I did. I would say it has a few elements of magical realism and I wouldn't really call it a thriller. However it is indeed an incredible book. There are 3 more books in this series, in case you don't know. I am yet to read them but I know they work as companions in some way. I don't know if you are aware of this so I thought I would let you know. The next one is 'The Angel's Game'. My best friend told me it is even better than the first book.

I feel exactly the same about Our Dark Duet. I sobbed while listening to it, driving on the highway. I was devastated, but I agree that what happened is exactly what needed to happen. And I absolutely adored A Gentleman's Guide. I definitely didn't expect to love it but it was utterly delightful!

Carlos Ruiz Zafón is such a great writer!! You should read the whole series. The Angel's Game is the second installment to the Cemetery of forgotten book series!
Also, I just got Strange the Dreamer, so happy to see it on your top 5 now I'm even more excited to read it!

I've read The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon last week and it is my favourite book of the year. It's a kind of Faust-retelling. It's the part of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, too. His writing is incredible, I'm so happy I've picked this book up. 😀 The Shadow of the Wind is definitely at the top of my TBR.

OMG Anne of Green Gables is my all time favourite series! The first book doesn't seem like much and it's kind of childish, I know; but if you progress through the series, the books mature along with Anne and you come to care so much about the characters. The last book, Rilla of Ingleside, in particular, gave me all the feels. Like, it's probably the most I've cried for a book ever! I LOVE ANNEEEEEEE (I'm really passionate about it lol)!!!! Also, thank you for the book recs, I think I'll check out Eliza and Her Monsters and Strange the Dreamer. They sound interesting. Have a nice day Hannah!

I was so happy that you read "The Shadow Of The Wind"! It truly is a very popular book here in Spain, and how it describes war times and the setting in the city of Barcelona is very true.
I don't know if you know that there are 3 more books in the series! "The Angel's Game", "The Prisoner of Heaven" and the last one hasn't been translated into English yet, I believe (it was released just a few months ago). He also has some very interesting YA stand-alones, so if you liked his style of writing I definitely recommend them too!

Carlos Ruiz Zafón is one of my favorite authors, and if you liked this book there are another 3 books in the saga and he has also written some youth novels (although I'm not sure which of them are translated).
I haven't read the other 4 books in the top five, but I'l give it a try to the Victoria Schwab saga 😇

OMG! I finished reading Our Dark Duet yesterday and I feel exactly the same as you! That is exactly it. I woke up this morning and I kept repeating "I still can't believe it!" I concluded it is because I didn't expect what happened to happen and you said it just right: I was so angry (still am) about the ending, but she made me believe that it's the perfect ending, that it could not have ended any differently. I wanted a different ending, but I get why it had to happen that way. I hope this makes sense.

Hannah, a book I think you'd enjoy based on what you've said you've liked...The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman. Basically a "librarian" in an trans-dimentional library goes to a steampunk Victorian era London where magic is a science and she has to retrieve a special book before someone else steals it first. Mystery, adventure, drama and magic all take place in this book.

The magical realism in The Shadow of the Wind is the element of the parallel between the lives of Daniel and Julian, in the sense that Danielès life starts to follow the same course.

sunshinerays yes, absolutely!!! That's what I did and I absolutely loved six of crows and crooked kingdom. There are some characters from the Grisha trilogy in the crooked kingdom, but you can live without knowing what their stories are.
I wasn't even finished with the six of crows when I purchased the Grisha trilogy because the writing and the world are miraculous.
So you can do it either way, all of the books are beatifully written.

I just found your channel, and as I need some new books to read, I've been watching your videos. I really appreciate how detailed you are about what you like and dislike about books, as that really helps me decide if I sounds like something I would be interested in. (Plus, after watching the video about popular books you didn't like, it helped me put my finger on why I didn't like a couple of them myself, lol.) As for what I've been reading, I've been kicking it old school recently and rereading the "Dragonriders of Pern" series by Anne McCaffrey.

Super random comment but I love that you pronounced the names from The Shadow of the Wind in spanish, like people usually say DAniel, not daniEL (sounds girly like Danielle so it puts people off lol), or soft J for Julian, etc, and it's so cool to hear them pronounced in the original language (I'm from Spain, btw) haha this was such a random thought but totally caught my attention that you did that

I loved This Savage Song so much more than Our Dark Duet to me the 2nd book left a few unanswered questions. But they were both excellent reads and I appreciated the way ODD ended. HP & the Prisoner of Azkaban and Daughter of the Pirate King were a few I really enjoyed! Great reads there are a few you mentioned that I want to read.

Not sure if you know this because you didn't mention it, but Shadow of the Wind is the first of a four book series, so there's plenty more to read and enjoy :) thank you for all the recommendations!

My favourite this summer was probably 'Sabriel' by Garth Nix- the world-building is amazing, original without being weird, and I absolutely love Sabriel as a heroine.

Some people like to do wrap ups every 5 or 10 books they read, IDK if this would work for you but it doesn't matter cause I love your videos no matter what lol

I always struggle in the summer to find books I want to read because I basically only read fantasy and I think it goes better with the fall/winter (yep I'm a seasonal reader haha), but I can always count on you for awesome recommendations !

I read the Shades of Magic trilogy (based off of your recommendation) and absolutely loved it! I tore right through those three books. I also just finished The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner which I also really enjoyed. Since you liked Dante and Aristotle so much, you might want to check this one out as well.
Glad to hear that you finally read and loved Shadow of the Wind. It's one of my all time favorite books. The 3rd sequel will be coming out next year so I'm very excited for that. (Angel's Game wasn't as good, but I did also really enjoy Prisoner of Heaven).
