When someone tries to deadlift me I’ve been working on a k-guard type sweep. Or, I sometimes manage to maintain distance so they aren’t able to fully extend on me. Any other ideas? Of course, knowing when to transition to a different guard is important.
Yes because, as he said, there are guards to control the upper body and guards to control the lower body. Spider guard controls the upper body and you no longer have control of the upper body.

What do you do if the stand and disengage backwards but then crouch so it's very hard to sweep or get under them?
Go to a different guard. Playing guard isn’t about doing what you want. It’s about using what’s there.

But what guard is effective in that scenario? Definitely not lasso or spider, not closed, all guard is nullified.
