I am a beginners beginner so I have been watching many RUclipss several by Tony but this was a lightbulb moment and solved many of my problem. I had been trying to get a decent resolution with NO good results and when Tony said to use the Laser Mode of M4 and I couldn't as mine was set to M3. I finally got it changed to allow for an M4 and the result have been amazing!! Thanks!!!
Jerry, the commands M3 M4 come from CNC machining commands. for a LATHE. and they refer to Spinning the CHUCK Clockwise or Counter-Clockwise. M5 is sthe Command to STOP. (see: M Commands in G-Code) Here, M4 refers to FULL POWER for cutting. and M3 is used for PWM(pulse width modulation) or "VARIABLE power" which gives you the "light to dark" burn. or GRAYSCALE. the range of steps is 256 from BLACK to WHITE. (256 decimal is the MAX you can count with 8bit binary resolution) Look up Binary to DECIMAL conversion if your want to learn more........ Anthony Baltazar: Eres Chingon! Cabron!! I would like to have a second indicator for the actual laser power - just like the buffer "VU meter". This would help to utilize the full dynamic range of the laser power (instead of reading the actual Sxxx values while running).

Thanks. Very insightful video. As a newbie I clearly understand what a difference the speed and line settings could do for a project. I'm yet to run my first trial. Any idea what sort of setting could get me to engrave granite? Not sure what I want to engrave on it yet but I have loads of it laying around.
Great video series Tony. A few months late comment, but did you consider dropping the Smax from 255 to a lower value so that it did not burn the wood as much? I guess if your machine goes faster and that solves the issue, then it's better. But just wondering.
I have tried dozens of various configurations and have yet to get anything to work remotely well.... vectorizing the image is the only works is for 10% of the lines anyway... Its like the laser chooses arbitrary times to fire... The inconsistency lets me do multiple passes and have different lines etched each pass with some gone over again. Anyone know what this could be?
Bro, great video! I have a question. I want to engrave airplane parts , such as wing ribs. I usually take a pic of my piece, then sent it to my gmail, where i send it to Grbl. My question is how do i get the actual size?
Hello, on my laser grbl the M4 does nothing, no lasering... works only with M3... i have grbl 1.1 and all.. could it be that my laptop is too old (32bit).. because it cant do the vectoring thing becuase the old laptop, it warns me that this wont work without a 64bit win
It's a part of the image where it is so light that the laser doesn't even fire and it skips over that part as fast as possible to get to a part of the image where it will fire the laser.
Loving watching and learning - I have an Atomstack X7 on order and downloaded LaserGRBL to sit and learn. Confirm you are using a veneer timber here on this video? Is it a good cheap option for testing with and giving fairly similar to solid woods?
Hello. I have two questions. Where can I buy lasers(diods) from please in the uk if possible. Then have you done a video that enables you to do a greyscale picture and then cut out the outline on it. PS I have looked at a few videos and yours are by far the best. thank you
Aliexpress.com is where I get most of my lasers. If you set up a greyscale engraving,, click file:append file. Then re-open the same image. Select vectorize,, select BW and move the slider until the red line is just on the outside of the image.
would like to engrave on wooden teaspoons, made of bamboo, the names are 90mm x 10mm and its taking about 25min per spoon, I am lasering the names "Louis & Bianca" in the font Edwardian Script ITC I have 60 spoons to do, what a nightmare. Some suggestion or help would be great.
with your two lasers mounted side by side, what is the distance from the project where you don't have to reset focal point when switching from one to the other and still be set right. how did you attach them.
use borax to make it darker. Mix 1 part borax to 10 parts water by volume and let it settle. brush the water on top of the mixture on to the wood then let it dry. It will turn out much darker.
If I want to add a second laser to my setup with a 15W laser, do I need a second Control board to run it, or can I just move over the connections for the laser I want to use. I’m talking about the board directly connected to the laser, not the Arduino I upload code to.
What I did: I hooked up both lasers to the control board,, almost. I hooked up ground (black) and signal (Blue or yellow). I then hooked up power to a two way switch so I can choose which laser to power. I will have a series on building a laser machine coming soon that will include more details.
Hi, with the most powerful laser, you should lower your S Max setting (try 127 instead of 255, for example) - Your laser will only output half of its power for black parts, and the lighter parts of the image will also be more ... light - And you'll get a greyscale ;-)
That can help. One issue is that you're not running your laser at half power,, you're running it at half duty (it's switching off and on at high speed) and it can still remove the surface (leaving it a little darker) instead of leaving the surface blackened.
Nope. Most lasers are 1000 max. The board is 8 bit though in most of these lasers,, so digitally,, the max is 255 and the board converts 0-1000 to 0-255 output.
@@theman-pc2ej you can usually increase those to 4500. Try: $110=3500 $111=3500 $120=250 $121=150 Type these individually in the console and hit enter. I don't know why they set the speeds so slow on these machines.

The reason there is no gray scale is because you had the white clip, contrast, and brightness settings up too high. P.s. you should also use a small fan to blow away the smoke, it can fog the lens on your laser with soot.
