  • Black Noir died at the end of the Boys Season 3, and was replaced in Season 4 by a new character taking the same moniker... played by the same actor, Nathan Mitchell. But how does this new Noir fare? Should the character have stayed dead?

Isnt the entire point of Black Noir 2 is to keep the facade of the Seven?
Like its pretty much the same for Translucent, they were pretending like he was on mission until they finally decided to say he was dead. They wanted to keep the appearance of an unstoppable and connected group to the public.

I think its pretty clear the show is making the new noir into the old noir. With the Deep pushing his darker side I think it's pretty likely they go much further with this in season 5 maybe even giving him brain damage from Soldier Boy again or something to a similar effect. • @Braddicusfinch

I think the current Black Noir is fine. The thing is, The Boys Season 4 had a LOT of plot lines to work through, and The Seven needed more members (I mean, there wasn't even seven of them at any point in S4). Having a replacement Noir makes the most sense, as most of the context for him can easily be displayed by him being a direction contradiction to the original, plus it provides a few gags of a type they've not yet had.
I think it was a good use or cinematic shorthand, as the only alternative would've been a completely new Supe, brand and all, that likely would have fit in the same role, but needed more explanation, in a season where they are already juggling a lot of balls. You say they needed to justify the character, but I would argue that a different character would require MORE justification. With this, they have all the same issues, but with more benefits.

This in no way ruins noirs legacy
There are so many problems with this season and the “new” noir isn’t one of them.

      What problems for example

    • @Nephentine
      @Nephentine 2 месяца назад +16

A lot of people didn't like Frenchie's plot with Colin or Kimiko's plot with Shining Light, and some people even had problems with Butcher constantly going back and forth on how to handle Ryan. There are also people mad with how Starlight reacted to finding out Hughie had sex with the shape shifter.
Personally I'm just too in love with this show to see its flaws. I like learning about Frenchie and Kimiko's past, I liked seeing Frenchie be gay since it was "teased" in season 2, and I found Butcher's internal struggle to be enticing. I also feel like Starlight's reaction, while totally unfair to Hughie, makes sense given her entire arc this season was about her insecurities.
Oh one more problem, and this one is the only one that really bugs me, is when Deep kills his octopus lover. Earlier in the exact same episode he's cuddling and reading a book to her and later she proceeds to die from being out of the water in what is shot like a few minutes. They should have just done some better editing so we know the octopus died over a long period of time, not near instantly.

@heinshaaine8153 I think the main problem with his season was the lack of plot progression in the 5 - 6 episodes. The characters basically have the same struggles they've always had (Frenchie & Kamiko are dealing with their troubled past, MM needs to balance his work with the boys with his family life, Butcher needs to decide how far ges willing to go etc.) or don't do much at all like Starlight. In addition some of the new story beats like Hughie reconciling with his mom and his fight with Starlight over sleeping with the shape-shifter are kinda rushed, which makes them feel as irrelevant inclusion. Lastly, I'd say that the shock of the gratuitous sex scenes and violence has worn of a bit, which makes those scenes a lot less impactful than in previous seasons (save for some e.g. when Homelander goes back to the lab he was raised in).
I think the story does pick up in the last few episodes, which makes me excited for season 5, but perhaps they could've worked both seasons into one slightly extended final season to keep up the pace.

Also I don't think this new noir is really supposed to be a real new character, the vought gang is getting less and less competent and more unreliable caused by homelander's terrible decisionmaking. It feels like a good in universe explanation for vought not wanting to introduce another new supe or leaving the spot empty, that team also needs some muscle with Sage and Firecracker being more manipulators and A-Train leaving.

The Boys is satirizing superheroes as a product. It takes the politics of celebrity culture and capitalism and imposes it on a landscape of, what are in comics usually, unaccountable violent vigilantes or agents of the government and then asks why people think this would be a good thing.
So when he says Superman in practice is a white supremacist execution, he's not saying Superman himself is white supremacist or was created to reflect white supremacy. He's saying the idolization of Superman's civility politics, American-ness, economic security, white image, Midwest rural background, and unchallenged might is given an outsized moral weight and reflects the desire for an unquestioned patriarchal force in service of The American Way, which is all thematically white supremacist in function.
Batman isn't an actual fascist. But Batman's wealth in service of attacking criminals through violence is fascist in execution.
The Boys is doing a good job of making people who love the thing it hates tear their hair out by never letting them think it loves the things it hates. It wants you to learn not to trust the thing you love because it doesn't trust the things you love.
It's a show about how problematic superheroes are as a concept and it wants to make you uncomfortable with the ease with which we let narratives of justice and law enforcement lead us into fascist world views.
The panic now is just people seeing the payoff and realizing it's targeted at them.

@@MrBazBakeThis take just seems bizarre to me. Superman was created by two Jews, his average enemies were domestic abusers, racists, and greedy business men.
Ignoring all of that background to say "Superman is representative of white supremacy because he's white and believes in the *ideals* America was founded on." is really short sighted.
The character was based on Moses, and was a refugee who found refuge on Earth. He has many parallels with immigrants.
It's just really superficial to ignore all of that and say the character is representative of white supremacy.

5:28, I get why they would have a new supe impersonate Irving, wanting to cover up his death to not attract suspicion with yet another Seven member being killed if they could afford it, unlike Maeve, who's "death" was more public and who couldn't be "recast" as easily as Irving, as his suit concealed his entire body.
Still, it's unfortunate then that Noir 2 wasn't given much to do other than being comic relief, though there are some dramatic elements that could arise if he were to be exposed after his crimes without his mask to shield him, which would perhaps force him to grapple with the fact that his "role" has gone too far and is taking over his entire identity, or even that he himself has no identity to begin with beyond these roles he obsesses over portraying.

Tbh, the Black Noir recast was one of my favourite parts of the season, it is a perfect demonstration of corporate capitalism and mirrors all the MCU recasts and replacements. In universe it makes sense, Black Noir is a popular IP and there's no way they're going to let it just go away, not when there are so many Supes to stick in the suit and act like nothing's changed.

I thought the Noir death scene was brilliant. Sad, but brilliant. The juxtaposition of the innocent cartoon characters with Noir's visible persona as the ruthless, faceless combat monster was fantastic IMO, and the way Buster Beaver retreats and slowly fades... New Noir pokes fun at the way superheroes never really die, they just respawn somehow. Noir not getting closure with Soldier Boy just adds to the tragedy of his character, and it's also a major theme of The Boys that things don't happen the way they "should," particularly in a superhero universe.
I'm kinda expecting a scene in S5 where Soldier Boy goes after Noir, and Noir is all, "Bro! What's your problem?!" [Flies to try to get away]. Soldier Boy has a WTF Moment and resolves to never ever get put down again because weird shit always happens while he's out.

@@FullFatVideos Within the 3 minutes of the video you talk about the new noir you mention:
Him being 1 dimensional, which is a good criticism.
Him getting used to killing too fast, which while sadly not shown on screen, happens in the span of almost half a year which is enough time to get him comfy with it, seeing he didn't object to the 3 chuds murder at the start until after he killed the guy.
You focus on the name black noir being important enough to warrant not being continued, which doesn't make sense since they aren't the same person and the show isn't acting like he's a replacment for the audience, but only for the people in the universe.
You say the only intresting thing is he can fly, and that he isn't intimidating anymore, like yeah, he isn't the same person, and he's not meant to be a replacement.
You say he shouldn't be there because there's already so many characters, but then by episode 7 there'd literally be 3 members in the 7, which doesn't really matter, but it doesn't make sense in the universe why vought wouldnt replace an easily replacable hero to make sure the team doesn't fall apart even more than it already had after seoson 3.
that's the only criticisms i found after rewatching the vid, you're way too attatched to the name and legacy for some strange reason.
You lost the last cake and ate it, this a new cake that's not been eaten, not the old one over again.

Giving him the powers of Homelander. this would allow you to have black noir to be closer to the comics in strength.
