It gets worse. Because his Black Noir persona was designed to both cover up all of his disabilities and to preserve element of his old face, per his wish. He wanted not to wear his helmet and for the public to see his face. In Voth's understanding of the world, his face is black so it would work if they make his costume black.
This way they can pair his wants with the fact that they actually want to hide him away.
So his current persona is just a prison that disables him from doing anything about his issues.

I always interpreted Noir seeing Buster Beaver as a child being him having imaginary friends, like a lot of kids do. Like the brief look at him we saw in Nicaragua showed him to be very lucid and rational, it's hard to believe he was seeing cartoon animals at the time. But a combination of emotional trauma and brain damage caused him to bring back his childhood imaginary friends as a coping mechanism.

Black Noir is easily one of the most interesting characters in this series.
At first he's made to be this threatening killer, but towards the end its shown he has the mind of a child...in what he sees, in how he writes, in how he reacts to Homelander...I'd love to see more of his backstop and I'm hoping he's really not dead. He's survived MUCH worse tbh...

This is a very interesting analysis, Georgia. The way I see it, Black Noir's fatal flaw is his submissiveness, and inability to make major decisions without the input of Homelander or Stan Edgar. As soon as Homelander realises that Black Noir knew about Soldier Boy being his father, he kills him for his apparent disloyalty.

    • @GeorgiaDow

Yes I think that is accurate. Really felt for him this season, more so after I got to see his inner world

    • @VortexThePrime

He has brain damage and is mentally reverted back to himself at an earlier age. Therefore he is looking for his own father figure. So it makes sense that he wishes to take orders as kids look to parental figures to help guide them.
It adds to one of the themes this season of parental longing.

    • @juniorlsdmusic
      @juniorlsdmusic 2 года назад +19

He was made submissive by Stan forcing him to wear the helmet, by SB, so I guess with Homelander being more powerful and a bully too, it would be safer to go with him than against him.

I think it’s also significant that when he returns to Homelander and gets a hug from him, Black Noir sees red hearts bubbling up which is a fascinating look into how he perceives the relationship between himself and Homelander, someone he knows is a violent psychopath. Whether it’s because of experience or being able to relate to another powerful supe or because he feels responsible for him after being the reason for him being raised without a father, Noir clearly has a close bond with Homelander as even he regretted “needing” to kill Noir but he couldn’t suffer what he saw as that great a betrayal.

I also love the deeper perception Noir got by how he imagines each animal to be cast in the play:
Soldier boy's the bald eagle, fine and dandy because USA USA, but it's also a vicious animal has no mercy.
Noir himself is obviously the black sheep, both because of his skin color and subsequent mistreatment he received.
TNTwins are horses because they are independent and instead of associating that with elegance etc it means arrogant pricks that they are. Also possible a carriage metaphor that is their title they have to carry together and why not any other animal.
That agent lady with no powers (shoot forgot her name) is an old goat too stubborn die or get things in her way
Lastly my favorite, his boss was a literal weasel meaning everything he does is a scheme and certainly even abusing Noir at that moment.

Yesterday a thought came into my mind and here I am to suggest it. You should definitely do a video on Azula from Avatar The Last Airbender. It's an old show but it's a well known one loved by everyone and has some of the best characters in animation. The things she does, the way she sees herself as a monster (like her mother does) but how she's still pretty stable for most of the time really blows my mind. One has to have calm mind to bend lightning, which is why her brother zuko fails doing it because he has anger issues. But she has perfect control over her element, in fact way too perfect. Not even talking about the literal mental breakdown at the end, which was very surprising to see in a lighthearted show like that, it felt very realistic. Or the time she tried to flirt with a guy but failed in the most absurd way. Not something you would see every day, lol. She's definitely not your typical villain, unlike her father. I think it would be interesting to see your take on Azula's psychology, as I've seen many other videos about it in the past. And also, great vid as always!

When I first saw that scene where Buster Beaver etc began talking to Black Noir, I (a grown-ass man) almost broke down crying like a little child. Before I began therapy (three months in a psychiatric clinic, was very lucky to have a good therapist) one of my major coping mechanisms with my self-hatred and lack of being able to deal with the outside world (was diagnosed with ADHD at the clinic, am currently pretty sure I have low-support needs autism but have not been diagnosed yet, so may be completely off, was suggested that it might be Fetal Alcohol Syndrome I do not know) was to mentally "converse" with characters I liked. I never believed them to be real, and never thought that they were actually talking to me, but when discussing that with my therapist we came to a sort of conclusion that they could be sides of my personality that I wanted to be more prevalent within myself, having been given archetypal characteristics based off of fictional characters or historical figures who I admired. Seeing Buster Beaver tell Black Noir what bravery was reminded me of the times I would force myself to interact with my abusive alchoholic mother and was only able to do so if I conjured this mental idea of an entire company of doughboys (nickname for United States infantrymen known predominantly for it's usage during the First World War) propping me up and telling me that I could "do this", as silly as that sounds. (If you are interested in discussing escapism as a coping mechanism in further detail I highly recommend Jack Stauber's "Opal" as I showed it to my then therapist and it really helped her understand what I was going through)

You may have covered this in another video I didn't see, but my take on the conversation between Black Noir and Homelander before Homelander kills Noir was that Homelander was initially trying to talk Noir out of wanting to kill Soldier Boy. When he realized he couldn't do that, he came up with Noir "betraying him" by not telling him that Soldier Boy was his dad as his justification to kill Noir. I think that if Homelander could have convinced Noir to back down on wanting to kill Soldier Boy then he would have let him live. It was important for Homelander to come up with an excuse to make having to kill Noir be Noir's fault and not his own. I just wanted to know if you think that's accurate or if Homelander was always going to kill Noir.

  • @tylerhughes9090
    @tylerhughes9090 2 года назад +11

I actually think it is Black Noir's sub consciousness as the characters explained how he dealt with a bully at school and how he dealt with that traumatic event and what happened in the past with Solider Boy's team and how to cope with his PTSD also what he had to do in the next.

  • @shadowskill111

The Buster Beaver line about bravery is ripped straight out of Green Lantern. A green lanterns power comes from will power and they are weakened by fear. When a ring finds a new Green Lantern it isn't looking for someone who can't fear. They are looking for people with the ability to overcome great fear.

Soldier Boy might have something similar, he hears voices that aren’t there and assumes the person behind (like Hughie) said something.

I am still disapointed black noir didn't get a rematch against solider boy, I was so excited for that fight and now I feel they rian johnsoned us
I just hope his story is not done yet and maybe we will see that fight in future seasons, probably not

Like others have said, he leaves real food out for his imaginary friends and doesn't notice that the previous meals are rotting in the bowl. That alone is a sign that something is wrong upstairs. Though is there any reason why it can't be both? That he has a vivid imagination that gets fired up by his psychosis?

OMGosh you're doing "The Boys"! F***ing awesome, Loved your analysis on Arcane. helped crystalize awareness of degrees of behavior while I feel you also make the transitioning zeitgeist to accepting mental health issues and addressing them, more palatable to a wider and younger audience. AND Stranger things? fear/phobia issues, right on. I mean, I know bugs freak out some people but the feather-light caress of an accidentally mis-directed traveling bug on my arm/leg/head, doesnt bother me.

Thanks for the vid! So happy that you covered Black Noir!
I appreciate what you said about the animated characters, as the piggy (who reminds me a lot of Porky the Pig) had a stutter which made him more sympathetic to Black Noir's developed speech impediment. He was very emotionally and physically abused by Soldier Boy. His fear, even as he was fully masked and still, was so palpable when he realized that Soldier Boy was returning, I'm not at all surprised he had ripped out his own tracker in his arm.
It's sad that Black Noir invented empathetic friends because he felt he had none, but in a way, I'm happy he had friends, so to speak. He trusted the narcissistic Homelander too much. Black Noir died on his own terms, so I'll give him that.

What doesn’t sit well with me about the “psychology behind Noir’s situation” is that encouraging oneself to face fears and do what we need to do and facing certain death for the sake of it (Noir’s case) are two very different things. There’s nothing brave in doing something that will lead to loss of life. If anything, Noir shouldn’t have gone back to Vought to face Soldier Boy. Bad decision.

His “psychosis” being friendly cartoons is hilarious. Even normal dudes have persecutors dialogue in their head, sometimes violent.
It’s clearly an exaggerated mental illness, non specified.
Psychosis is when you lose touch of reality, but that definition to a psychotic person destroys them.
I haven’t gone into psychosis for years, but it’s basically just pure distilled fear. The feeling of “I gotta get the FUCK out of here or I’m going to die 100%”
It’s all just real, there’s no reasoning with what you’re processing. That helicopter up there is watching and listening to you, people can read your mind make sure to think happy thoughts, etc.
I’m doing everything I possibly can to not go into psychosis again. It causes actual brain damage. If it happens again I really don’t think I can handle it.

Almost looks like a gaggle of tulpas or headmates he's created for himself and he's superimposed his fantasy/wonderland on reality in that restaurant. Almost like an AR overlay, only it's his imagination, instead of technology. I'm going to guess they probably didn't exist before the head injury but I'm not 100% sure.

I don't know if you've done it already (just discovered this channel)
But I think you'd have a great time checking out What Remains of Edith Finch.
Lots of really good examples. One of which was definitely a kind of psychosis.
One of the people disassociated at work. Therapist didn't pick it up as a bad thing. And he sunk into the fantasy more and more. Until he ended up killing himself because he thought real life was the fantasy and vice versa

I thought you were doting the animals in the background to fade in and out of view and to change direction to make us the viewers, have this feeling of psychosis. Where did yhe squirrel go? Wasn't it facing the other way a second ago? I noticed it with the squirrel first when it changed direction.
Then I realized they were on string, hanging from something. The human brain does some crazy stuff to fill in the blanks
