I think homelander genuinely loves ryan. In the last season when he brings ryan to a super hero themed event, there was a moment where ryan was severely overwhelmed and homelander was able to immediately see that and took action to remove him from the situation. There was no gain for that, he was just trying to make his son feel safe.

That scene is the turning point for Homelander in this season and the whole series. Homelander does love Ryan in this scene, but it comes from a place of ego and desperation. It sadly isn't a sustainable, unconditional love. He believes it is, but it isn't. He loves Ryan as an extension of himself, as a chance to heal his own wounds. If things in their relationship don't continue to progress the way Homelander wants, things could go very sideways between them. Especially since Homelander is already making Ryan more and more comfortable with violence and brutality, which will only make Ryan more willing to fight back when eventually pushed too far by his father who demands something he doesn't want to do. If Billy can swallow EVERY instinct he has, cut the snarky BS for ONCE in his life, and just be genuine with Ryan, maybe the world has a chance.
It's also entirely possible Homelander does a great job as a father, relatively speaking, and raises Ryan to be the spitting murderous image of his old man who sees Human life as little more than collateral damage because that's just the way he was born and, oh well. It would be a really interesting psychological journey to see them try to balance. The show has so much more depth than the comics ever did.

As strange as it is, Homelander and Ryan's relationship really demonstrates the importance of representation: of being able to see someone like yourself represented in media. Though, in this case, it's seeing someone like yourself actually existing in the world. As messed up as Homelander is, part of that is his lack of connection to others: he's so powerful, and no one is anywhere near his power level, and so while no one can really stand up to him, no one can also understand what he goes through just living day to day with so much strength, in a world designed for people so much weaker and fragile than he is. In Ryan, and FOR Ryan, this is the opportunity to finally meet someone who can understand what he deals with every day... someone who understands having to exert so much control over yourself, not even just morally, but also physically, to just be able to exist in a world that is not built for someone of your strength and senses. A world where everything is too fragile, too loud.

Unfortunately, "love" is not the panacea stories like to pretend it is. "Love" on its own is not enough; you also have to put in _work,_ and unfortunately, that's where some people draw the line. I haven't seen the show, but from what I heard and just saw, he might love the IDEA of a son, and not Ryan himself.
Like he wants to swoop in and make his boy feel better. Be the person who he never had. Be there for a mini version of himself and raise him to be like him.
But it all comes back to HIM, not Ryan. Ryan is hearing what he needs for now, but the more individuality he shows and interests that are not like Homelander that appear, might start to set Homelander on edge. And if Ryan takes on a different moral code, especially one that opposes Homelander, than he might actually be in danger.
Homelander also had not seen Ryma when he's being mad, sad, bratty, difficult, sneaky, rebellious and all the little negative parts that a child naturally has to be. He might just want to be a part time parent, which will give Ryan an unreliable father figure at best.
Point is, Homelander may have done the right thing in this one instance, but it seems very unlikely he'll keep it up. A broke. Clock is only right twice a day after all.

We've seen this happen before with the character in different grades, he has a messed up sense of love and care. Usually when he loves someone it ends up very badly for that person when he eventually finds something that doesn't lke about that person and something does click on him
That said, maybe with Ryan is different, given it's his son
But, for now, his love, even if his mind is completetly messed up, is sincere. He is really trying, not interested in the power but in his son. He provesthat when he kills the man that hit Ryan, without hesitation, jeopardizing his public image, the mostimportant thing for him

There's no trick. Homelander truly loves his son! He has all the fans and love he could ever want, but Ryan is the only person he really cares about. When Ryan goes missing Homelander goes crazy like any loving parent would. He also shows he would die for Ryan in season 3, when soldier boy is about to kill him and Ryan. Homelander dosen't run away and leave his son, he makes sure his son is ok. I'd say Homelander is a perfect father!

I think it's fine to say that this was a great act of fatherhood but will drag Ryan deeper into his other problematic aspects, which will hurt Ryan later as he either adopts his father's miserable mindset or separates from him with feelings of loss, maybe betrayal, maybe loss of identity, or maybe even guilt and self hatred if Homelander convinces him to perform reprehensible actions of his own.
This act could have been (and maybe still could be) transitioned into a more constructive, happy life for Ryan, but will probably be used to bring him down further.
Realistically though, Ryan will probably go through some very bad times with Homelander's teaching, almost committing or actually committing some bad actions, before eventually being rehabilitated by Butcher or the Boys.

I think Homelander had no chance to learn empathy as a kid and a teenager, he was never shown any, he's stuck as, idk, toddler (?) in his emotional development and we can't put ALL the blame of who he became on him. But at some point it's your choice how exactly do you deal with your nightmare upbringing and trauma. Maeve genuinely pitied him, Noir loved and trusted him, and i'm sure there were more people in his life who he could've chosen to be compassionate for (Homelander is akin to Johan from "Monster" anime, when he could've been like Grimmer)
He could've left Vought, fly away, nobody would've stopped him, damn, he could've killed all the people who tortured him as a kid and go public about horrible things this company did, but he chose to stay as is and lash out on everyone around him
I think Homelander does love Ryan, it's the only person he's willing to change and make personal sacrifices for. The problem is he doesn't have experience nor skills of how to connect with people

Ryan brings out what is left of Homelander’s humanity, that everyone else believes is long gone. Homelander needs to learn that it’s okay to show your emotions and it’s okay to not be okay. If he loses Ryan, if his son is killed, all hope is lost. Homelander will destroy the world as he destroys himself.

I think he was genuine here, because later when that guy throws trash on Ryan he kills him instantly during a parent defending his kid instinct moment while he was driven by emotions (if it was by reason he would not do that because threw trash cant possible do anything to Ryan so retaliation would make no sense, especially with so many witnesses around xD) and emotions are always honest.
TBH I never saw Homelander as evil, I saw him as broken (because he was raised up wrong). Last season of boys put lot of weight on the "evil ppl are not born, but their are made by bad parenting" idea in general with all the characters sharing their bad experience with their fathers and how it shaped them so I guess they made Ryan story this way to show that father can be good as well.

I believe Homelander was being genuine and does love his son, the thing is the reason he says Ryan wasn't wrong for what he did is because Homelander genuinely sees Himself and Ryan as above all over supes and those supes above humans. Ryan is part of his superiority complex so what Ryan does to others is always okay as they don't matter. I do think it's genuine care and it wasn't Ryan's fault that anyone was hurt but at the same time this scene only reinforces who Homelander is

I think the relationship between Homelander and Ryan is indicative of how most malignant narcissists feel about their children. So long as Homelander can project his own wounds onto Ryan and address them in a way that reflects positively on himself, he is a "perfect" dad. This scene between the two of them isn't really about Homelander talking to his son, its him self soothing with Ryan as a stand in for himself. I also doubt any if that is a conscious thought on Homelanders part.

@@_Cartographer_ healthy ones do. That said, folks like Homelander don't really see their kids as people separate from themselves, more like they are little extensions of themselves or like show dogs they have trained. So long as the kids reflect positively, they are great, objects to be adored and shown off. Once the kids do something embarrassing or "embarrassing " they are no longer important or to be shown off.

I think like many narcissists, HL sees his son as an extension of himself, which is why he is so kind to him at first. He sees him as his own achievement, his seed, and at that point in the series he's at the idealization stage of their relationship. That only lasts until you disappoint the narcissist in some way, then all hell breaks lose
