I gather you find this ironic LOL starting out with half-a-dozen plugins on the mix bus. And it's very clear that all of his other channels are totally plugged up and effected to begin with. 🙄

Great video! I agree with you on the SSL comp, I used to only set the attack to the slowest setting. Recently I started to play with the attack time and found that sometimes a little faster attack time makes the drum transients punch so hard in the mix and work really well with the bass. Thanks!
i find that a 4:1 ratio with a lower threshold (up to 2db of gain reduction) works better to glue a master together with the SSL bus compressor
That's because with the SSL bus compressor the knee is linked to the ratio. To get the classic SSL glue it is a 4:1 ratio.
Less is more sometimes. Instead of buying more plugins I saved money for a Soundcraft Signature MTK USB mixer, and now I mix hybrid with Reaper DAW. My MIDI based drumtracks came alive for instance and it's a lot more fun to use a real mixer. :D
While watching, I forgot it was ill Factor speaking. He and Graham have similar tones and they explain things in almost the same way! Happy to see ill as a host again!!!

I am new to mixing and I always like to apply the KISS principle KEEP IS SIMPLE STUPID in life generally, by choosing the correct tools and steps and procedures that get the job done most efficiantly. Working smarter not harder.

This is a duhh moment. The more processing the more to go wrong and the more u loose sight of the original sound. I dont get why somone would need 5 or more plugins on 1 channel? If it didnt get u there with eq then ur probably doing something wrong. Look at CLA do think he stacks comp after comp and eq after eq? No he gets it done with simple chains because he understands the gear and what its used for or how to use it. Learn ur gear or plugin and record properly and you wont need a ton of plugins to get where u want. Ive bin in the business for 20 years now and worked with or mentored by some of the best so trust me
Depends on what processing we're talking about though. If it's sound design, then i may have loads of plugs going on to create something fun and inspiring.
that might be true for more acoustic music. in EDM we use “5 or 6 plugins per channel” to creatively shape unique sounds 😎 no regrets
I guess it depends on the genre. I feel like if you’re doing electronica, like techno or dubstep you’d use more plugins and I agree with you about the more stuff you’re processing, the more can go wrong. I don’t really use many plugins. I like having the original sound. The only effects I use are a few pedals. The Palladium and the Nemesis delay for my guitar and the SanAmp Bass Driver for the bass and I only use a plug in effect for my vocals, nothing too crazy.
@@SpikeColgate Even then you can choose just a few plugs and instead apply more of the automation to create complex changes etc. Do what you feel. Its such a fascinating subject mixing. Each to their own. Enjoy.
I hate the way this channel has gone. It’s become an advertising platform for other people’s content.
Graham has basically left this channel on auto pilot. He is focusing all of his attention on his other channel named (Graham Cochrane). I don't really like it either how he just left this channel here. I don't know what the future of this channel will turn out to be.

Why do you hate it? In my opinion, the guests are basically giving the same valuable content as recording revolution, and even better, you'll get to learn from many talented audio engineers.
The reason why Graham has automated his channel is because he want's to minimize the work so he could focus more on the things he finds meaningful in life. Living a happier life!
@@roomtonerecordings4221 I hate it because it’s simply not as good as it used to be. The attraction was Graham and his perspective. I have lots of other RUclips channels to go to if I want to hear other peoples content and ‘adverts’. But we knew where we stood with Graham and it was his story and his experience that made his content attractive - at least to me anyway.
Naturally, we are all free individuals and as such I think it’s great that Graham has chosen to concentrate on things he finds more ‘meaningful’. But every decision we make has consequences, and one of the consequences is that his RUclips channel is far less attractive to lots of his older followers. I’ll be surprised if his channel grows by doing this, and predict it’ll shrink. Very happy to be proved wrong. At the end of the day it’s all just personal taste.

You are using a limiter in case it clips? If it clips you want to know, because it already clips before the limiter. If you are using a limiter you might end up with a clipping mix without knowing it because the limiter stops the already clipped signal from clipping.
I think it's a reasonable practice, just in case you miss a quick peak. If a limiter is applying, say, -0.2dB of gain reduction just to prevent an over, it's not the end of the world. But ideally I'd catch any peaks in a mixdown and go back and adjust.

At start voice was normal. At 0:44 sound became nasal. Was it EQing trouble?

I tried to limit the number of plug ins I used. It made the recording too muddy
I'm curious: do you have oversampling engaged on Mix Rack? I'd be nervous about applying saturation to a whole mix and introducing aliasing (unless you're running at a higher sample rate).
I think a higher sample rate is what he was going for
@@ARV36982 Right. This project is running at 44.1k, so that actually increases the chances of aliasing. So it would have to be handled via oversampling.

Any tips on working on different daws? I know you've worked with pro tools, logic, live and now studio one. Makes me curious
I would say that the DAW is all but irrelevant to the outcome. A DAW itself is nothing but a platform or workflow. So as an example AM & FM Radio may sound different, the song itself is the same. A certain DAW or workflow may increase the chance of a kind of workflow and therefore style of outcome, there is nothing such a DAW that is "right" for a genre or similar outcome.
@@BenedictRoffMarsh i'm exactly referring to the workflow part. I've been using pro tools since forever because I learned and I'm even certified in it at audio school but nowadays it's unsustainable to pay the full licence price. So I'm looking for options to change. Already tried reaper but felt like a spaceship to me.

You're using 5 plugins, which are doing a lot of work: 2 EQs, 2 compressors, and a limiter. Question: fewer plugins than what? 10? I don't understand what you're teaching here. Perhaps it should be 1 EQ, 1 compressor, and no limiter. Let the mastering engineer handle that. BTW I've watched your video on your vocal chain, and that is an insane amount of plugins. I don't know how your sessions can even run.
Yeah, I get your point. I think he´s referring to using less plugins on the single track channels by having compression and EQing on the Master bus already. Also called the top-down-mixing idea. But, yes: others, like Graham, just uses the SSL Bus compressor on the 2bus plus 1 multi band EQ
@@HenryMittnacht I see what you're saying, but I've watched almost all of Ill Factor's content, and he uses a fuck-ton of plugins on every single track. Vocal chain, case in point: EQ, Compressor, Saturation, Compressor, EQ. I can't remember it all or the specific order, but I remember thinking that it was excessive. And I got the impression that he thought it was a simple vocal chain.
@@good4sound For some it is simple. It really depends on what you are trying to get. You could use no plug-ins, but you wouldn't get a high end studio sound. You could bounce the tracks to save your processor and ram if needed. Restore it if you want to change something or keep a backup if your software doesn't do that. But less plug-ins vs putting them on every track.... we all know we've all tried that one before.
good4sound yeah, I've noticed that as well. This is why we should trust our ears more than reproducing someone's way even if the guy is famous or what not😉. I also don't see the point in using tons of plugins on a single track but on the other hand I'm not a Grammy nominated producer😂.
Oh the irony. Ill Factor circulated this just now. Like 10 plug-ins on his vocal chain. I’m not trying to put him down. I just think his approach is excessive and he plays it off as simple.

I just wish all these channels would stop using shitty Pop, R&B, and EDM examples.
To me not one pop song past something from the 80's sounds what I would call "Buttery, Rich, Creamy, Warm" that's all descriptive of great classic rock albums. Even old Motown records and stuff had warmth it was great. But I hear none of that in these new examples people use.
I can appreciate the time in your video and there's some good info but I guarantee you would not produce a rock or metal track that same way.
