      The subject of this video is interesting, but the video would be so much better without all the stock photos and irrelevant clips that has nothing to do with the P88. And the same goes for all the cliches and blah blah blah.

      @@john1703 It's difficult to know the exact story but it was a fight between the FIA and Le Mans and also a majority of drivers were complaining about how dangerous it was for any car of any category

    To paraphrase Norbert Singer: We were worried when we first saw that Peugeot was breaking 400kph on the straight with their car. When soon after we read the actual laptime, we stopped worrying.

      There was a period where the Australian touring car series ran to Group C just not the Sports Cars version.

    So TIL Peugeot was actually a back seat driver on this record, as I had (wrongfully) assumed it was a factory team, considering all the shameless plugs they did during the era (I briefly owned a 405 MI16).

    I always wonder if the Nissan R90CK would of broke the speed record on the Mulsanne straight.
    230 mph on the mulsanne WITH chicanes is just insane.

      @@deadrippp I believe the C9 hit 248 mph on the straight in '89 during qualifying. I could be wrong.

    Never heard about that story before and i am well into motorsports! Awesome video my friend! The fact that a hobby project ended up and running at LeMans is awesome and insane (in a good way). And now with this achievement it becomes even more mindblowing that a Bugatti runs over 400km/h as "production car" you can drive on the street and to the store to get milk :D (sure with a nice pricetag but still...). Let's see what the Jesko Absolute will deliever :) cheers!

    Thank You for another mgnificent production. I still have not worked out what was more awe-inspiring: the horsepower ratings of these small European engines or the intriguing shape of the wheel arches, (or lack of) on the P88.
    Also thanks for a fresh pronunciation of the name Peugeot. As a child I might have read it before hearing anyone speak it aloud, and so I always called them PIEw-joe, as in Pepe le Pew, with the emphasis on the first syllable. Then in high school ensued prolonged arguments with friends who pronounced it PURR-joe, as in purring kittens, again with the emphasis on syllable #1.
    Now hearing the name pronounced purr-JOE, with the emphasis on the second syllable, I concede that my childish phoenetic pronunciation, based on reading the name in a book without ever having heard it spoken, was err, well, inaccurate to put it gently. Which of the other two is correct; which syllable to emphasise? I'll leave that between you and my high school mates. (who would agree with me that Porsche has one syllable - silent E)

    Shame we don't see private teams like this make their way into the big leagues. Just a couple of guys making a car out of passion. Mostly because its impossible to develop something like a sports prototype unless you're a huge manufacturer with hundreds of millions in budget and hundreds or thousands of employees.

    I would think that Roger Dorchy was a little white faced when he came in after this &,of course,this achievement was mainly responsible for the chicanes installed for the 1989 race.
    Lap times at Le Mans now are quicker with chicanes than before.

      @@gregrobins5615 Right; a Volvo p1800 holds the world record for longevity over 4 million miles; I've never seen a 1st generation honda insight actually break, need a clutch or tires; sure but never have seen one have a mechanical break down; crashes obviously; It only has a 1 liter but I've had it over 10,000 ft passes no problem. My buddies father bought him a Peugeot for graduation from coollege which he picked up new in France; it was already rusting by the time they sent it back home. So I don't have a good impression on Peugeots sure it was just one car; but my cars never had such a problem with a new car.

    That car is - without any doubt - very fast and impressive. But in '87 one of those cars made 13 laps, the other broke after 3.5 hours, less than 1/3 of the race duration. It was a dang fast car, but it couldn't really compete.
    Le Mans is not about top Speed, it's about driving fast for 24 hours and not break the car.

    No, it was the 2 cars, 1 Mercedes and 1 Porsche, that took off at around 400km/h and somersaulted into the woods that brought about the chiquaines on the mulsane straight.

    This is a bit ridiculous ... what if Porsche took one var and designed it for fastest top speed ( before the chicanes ) they may have been in the 260’s.

    why do people love this car . all it did was get in other teams way . could not go around corners at any speed with out going of track. did not take to the track for 3 hours. did not even have a go of even finishing

      I recall hearing some of the Radio Le Mans coverage where they announced each time the WM ventured out on track again.

    What can be defined as " fastest" in Le Mans history?? Highest top speed or average speed or maybe the vehicle traveled longest in 24 hrs?? IMHO I think its the Audi R15 since it covered the most distance in 24 hrs. A car is not fast if it has to stop every 30 mins for refuling, or breaks down after 20 laps.

    Why do english speaking people allways call it mulsanne straight? The correct name is hunaudieres straight. Mulsanne is only the corner at the end of the straight.

    I could break that record. Give me an underground racing 3000 whp V10 and a Porsche 919 and we can hit 430 kph even with the reduced Mulsanne

    Well, _forever_ is a long time. It seems the latest Koenigsegg _road car_ is likely capable of accelerating/braking fast enough to at least tie that record, even with the chicannes.
    It goes from 0-400-0 km/h in ~2.2km; the longest section of the chicanned Mulsanne straight is ~2km. You wouldn't need to start or end at 0 km/h, so it could probably do it.
