    Hi, I’m Mark from eReplacementParts.com. In this video, I’m going to show you how to replace the starter rope on a Ryobi trimmer. The starter rope wraps around the starter pulley in your trimmer’s engine. The rope allows you to manually turn the engine over to get it started. After years of use, the starter rope will weaken, and eventually it will break, and you will need to replace it.
    Replacing the starter rope is easy to do and I’m going to show you how. Starter ropes, as well as many other parts, can be found on our website. Let’s get started.
    I’ll begin by removing the rear cover. Now we have access to the carburetor and the throttle cable. While it is possible to remove the throttle cable from the carburetor’s linkage without removing the carburetor, it’s very easy to accidentally break the cast end on the end of the throttle cable. So, I will go ahead and remove the two screws that secure the carburetor to the engine. Now I can pull the carburetor away and twist it up while removing the throttle cable.
    Now, I’ll remove the clutch housing and the shaft from the rest of the engine. It’s secured with four screws. Now I’ll remove the clutch drum and the clutch. Before I do that, though, I need to bind up the piston. If I don’t bind the piston, when I go to remove the screw that secures the clutch drum and the clutch itself, the crankshaft will simply rotate and I won’t be able to free them.
    I’ll remove the spark plug boot and then the spark plug. Now to bind the piston, I’ll insert a piece of starter rope into the cylinder. The starter rope will coil up and take up all that space inside the combustion chamber so the piston won’t have any travel and the crankshaft won’t be able to rotate. Now that the piston is bound, I can remove the clutch drum and the clutch.
    Now, I can remove the starter assembly. As I pull the starter away, there is a wire that leads to the ignition coil. I’ll need to remove that. Now I’ll begin disassembling the starter. First, I’ll remove the starter handle from the starter rope. I’ll go ahead and untie the knot in the rope. If you can’t untie the knot, it’s okay to go ahead and cut it off. This one is going to be kind of stubborn, so I will just cut it.
    Now, I’ll remove the handle from the rope, and I need to take the tension off the starter spring. To do that, I’ll just let the rope go inside the starter. With the tension removed from the starter spring, I can remove the starter pulley. I’ll remove these retaining clips that hold the pulley in place. Again, don’t attempt to do this if you have not removed the tension from the spring.
    Normally, there would be an additional retainer like this on the end of the shaft. However, it is missing on our model. This retainer is not reusable, so you can use a screwdriver to pry it away. With all the retainers removed, now I can pull the starter pulley away from the housing. I want to be careful that I don’t take the spring with it, otherwise you will have to recoil that spring. Now, I’ll remove the rope from the starter pulley.
    Now, I can install the starter rope. I’ll thread the starter rope through the opening in the pulley. I’ll pull that through and tie it off with a knot. I’ll then tuck the knot inside of the pulley. Now, I’ll install the starter pulley back into the starter housing; aligning the slot on the pulley with the tab on the spring.

    Excellent! A few comments: My spring case was reverse side up from what you show. Second, instead of one-handed overhand knot, I just knotted it before rotating for tension, making sure the rope did not coil in the pulley, and then, after the screws were in the plate cover, released the pulley, and it all retracted very well. You may want to caution that it is easy to deform the clutch plates if you try to remove it with channel locks or other points of contact.

    Thank you for this one too, so clear and detailed hope this will work for my B&D trimmer, tried once and did not realise I needed to do all this to get at it, so gave up.
    Glad to see no one picked on your ring finger this time, it's great and I wear one too , although smaller!
    I came back to this as I had trouble to get to the clutch... Good and bad luck about it. Your next video shows clearly how you go about it and that you are using a P25 Torx screw driver. This was the good luck I had not idea and tried flat, phillips and Allen keys in vain. But the bad luck was I had only Torx bits that fit into a too thick holder and therefore can't be use for this job! But now I'll get there although I don't know if my B&D is P20 or 25 (other bolts were p20)
    Perhaps it would be a good idea to show the tools needed to achieve the whole job.

    I just finished replacing the rope on mine that looks exactly like this model. You don't have to remove the carburetor cover/carburetor. The object is to separate the throttle cable from the shaft/clutch over so you can remove the shaft and clutch and get to the rope. I just unbolted the throttle handle/trigger ( one side of it) by removing 5 screws and unhooking the cable from the trigger. Does the same thing as the carburetor removal and I think it's easier.

    This is great explanation on how to replace the spring or the rope. My problem is that I pull the rope and the pulley has good spring tension but it doesn’t engage with the flywheel. The plastic ratchet part doesn’t seem worn and the pawls on the flywheel are seemingly OK too. What else can I do? It’s a Ryobi pbc 3020

    The problem is if the rope is broke inside the machine how can you move the piston head to the position to stop the clutch plate moving?

    • @FIXTechGuides
      @FIXTechGuides  7 лет назад

      The retaining screw for the clutch is threaded directly into the crankshaft. you can use your Torx Driver to turn the engine over till it binds up on the rope in the spark plug hole and then proceed taking the Clutch Drum off.

      not too sure what you mean, but you use another bit of rope if the machine's is not yet accessible. and I heard make sure you live enough out to pull it back at the end.

    Can anyone give me the length of the starter rope please

    • @FIXTechGuides
      @FIXTechGuides  7 лет назад +1

      This rope is around 3' in length. If you're going to use something other than the OEM rope, make sure the diameter of the new rope is similar to the rope you're replacing.
