Hi, I’m Mark from eReplacementParts.com. In this video, I’m going to show you how to replace the carburetor assembly on a Ryobi trimmer. The carburetor creates the air-fuel mixture that allows combustion in your trimmer’s engine. The carburetor tends to be sensitive to dirt and debris, which can plug it. Also, if you allow fuel to sit in the carburetor for an extended period of time, it will tend to varnish the inside components of the carburetor, which will also plug them.
It is possible to rebuild your carburetor. However, if that’s a repair you don’t want to do yourself, or if the carburetor is so badly plugged with varnish and corrosion, then this kit will allow you to replace it. Replacing the carburetor is easy to do and I’m going to show you how. Carburetor assemblies, as well as many other parts, can be found on our website. Let’s get started.
Before removing any of the fuel lines from the carburetor, or the lines from the tank, you’ll want to make sure you drain any gas that might still be in the fuel tank. I’ll begin by removing the rear cover. Now I’ll remove the two screws that secure the carburetor to the engine. Now you can pull the carburetor away, disconnect the throttle cable, and remove the fuel lines. Now reattach the line that goes to the primer; this is the one next to the adjustments.
Now, remove the incoming fuel line from the fuel tank. The fuel filter nipple passes through the bottom of the tank, and this makes for a very tight connection. The easiest way to remove this, since we are going to be replacing it anyway, is to just simply cut it off. So first, I’ll pry the plastic washer away from the fuel line. And now, just cut that off flush to the tank. Now, use a small screwdriver to push the remainder of the fuel filter through and into the tank. And now, tip the trimmer so that the fuel filter falls out of the gas tank.
Our carburetor replacement kit includes a new fuel filter with fuel line, and a second piece of fuel line. The second piece, you actually will no longer need. The older models used to have a short piece of line between the fuel filter in about this point here. The line wasn’t cut, and this fitting was installed to extend the line to the carburetor. But the current kits include a long piece of line, and this is no longer needed.
Now, I’ll install our new fuel filter and fuel line assembly. There’s a couple of things I’m going to do to prepare the line to go into the tank a little easier. First, I’m going to cut a taper on the end of the line, and I want to cut off as little of the line as possible here. Next, I’ll take some two-cycle mix oil, and just lubricate the line so it will slide through the hole in the tank a little easier.
And now we can install the assembly into the fuel tank. I’ll insert the fuel line into the tank, and try to snag that taper that we cut on the line, on the hole that the fuel line passes through. Then I can pull it through and work the nipple on the fuel filter into the opening.
The fuel filter and line kit includes a small plastic washer. This washer goes over the fuel line and up over the nipple on the underside of fuel filter.
Now, insert the fuel line through the hole in the backside of the carburetor plate. I’ll go ahead and cut that end square (that we tapered earlier), and I can reinstall it to the carburetor. Now, I’ll install the carburetor gasket that’s included in the kit.
Now, I’ll reinstall the throttle cable back onto the carburetor throttle linkage. And I’ll secure the carburetor, as well as the choke plate, with the screws. And now I’ll reinstall the rear cover with the air filter.

Perfect! Great video. Thank you for doing this. Only question I have is with a carb rebuild kit costing as much as a new carb assembly, why would I consider all the time and effort to rebuild one? Seems a new carb is the only way to go. Thanks again.

Tim Everitt well if that’s the case then it would be better to just replace it

On some of the Ryobi engines there is no way you can press the top of the fragile filter with a screwdriver when installing it. Use a wire up through the bottom to guide the line until you can grasp it with a needle nose. It was impossible to get the return line fitting down through the hole. I had to use a small piece of the WD40 tube shoved inside the new tube and insert from the bottom. It was 3/16" OD tube.
I notice he didn't try to start it and set the jets???

At 5:47 there is no adjustment assembly on the top of the carb, then at 5:52 it miraculously appears! Did you skip that part? It’s the only thing I came here to see 😂🙄

Hard to get parts. I searched for the carb rebuild kit and Amazon was showing complete carbs for the same price as a gasket set. I bought one. Installed and tried to prime and it wouldn't prime. The bulb got stiff and blew the hose off the top of the carb. I bought a second one with the same result. Friggin China. Compression test revealed 90 psi. It starts but won't stay running. I am certain it's a fuel problem.

I replaced my carb and it still does the same thing. What would cause fuel to leak out the center of the carb when pressing the primer bulb?

I bought new fuel filters with thick metal ring on the bottom. Original filter (like on the video) doesn't have it. What is the purpose of this ring? Do I need to remove it?

I am curious, this looks exactly like the trimmer i have, why do you press down on the fuel filter when installing it? The fuel filter / line when installed should it be right at the hole the line passes through and standing up? I bought this replacement carb about 7 years ago and i am starting to have issues again ( which started with my fuel lines rotting out but they were the original ones ).

It depends on the type of fuel filter you have some of them are have the filter pressed through the fuel tank and other have the fuels filter laying in the bottom of the fuel tank with a longer fuel line going to the carburetor.

I have the same problem. Yes the Chinese carbs are garbage. Better off putting a diaphragm and reed gasket in your old carb. They are pretty simple. Get the adjustment tools and watch a video on how to adjust these.

I wish it was that easy. After giving 6 different places - incliding eReplacementParts - every number listed on my Ryobi 31cc 790r 18in. weed eater, no one can match any of them . Talk about mission impossible. I could have bought a new one for the price of all the minutes burned on my phone. Maybe Ryobi don't know what the words cross reference mean.

Hi there, and thanks for commenting. I found a carburetor that matches the Ryobi 790r String Trimmer, and you can find it here:
      www.ereplacementparts.com/carburetor-assembly-p-283573.html
You can double check that you have the correct part by searching "carburetor" on the Ryobi 790r String Trimmer's model page here:

I hope this has finally helped you find the part you need to fix your Trimmer!

Thank you for the reply. I have found carbs on all of the sites I've been to. A lot of them look similar but not the exact same thing. The problem is that none of the numbers I enter for my Ryobi come back to anything. I bought it in 1997, and some of the carbs I'm looking at say 2004. Here are all of the numbers listed on my Ryobi exactly as they are written on it.
This is from the owners manual. - Engine Family : SN4031UB24RA; EM
The same number is also on a little sticker on the engine only it reads - TN4031UB24RA; EM
      Then there's a Model # on the engine. 708020752 : PPN 501145
      Roybi 790R "EZ"
Then there's another number on a sticker on the engine, it reads -
      5A6987
      (97)
      708 - 3052661
I'm lost for words when none of these numbers exist in any system.
The carb on your webite looks close. Mine doesn't have a big white plastic cap on top of it. If you say it'll fit I'll buy it.

Hi again. It seems to me that the model number of your trimmer is simply Ryobi 790R. Based on the parts list, the carburetor I sent you is compatible with your model. As you said that you purchased your trimmer in 1997, it's entirely possible that they have substituted a new carburetor for an obsolete part. In fact, our website mentions that this carburetor is a substitute part. I hope it works out for you!
