I bought a similar TAG Heuer quartz watch, #980.0138, 30 years ago and wear it daily. It cost about $300. At that time I knew nothing about TAG Heuer. I just liked the look of the watch. It has been serviced by LVMH and has also had normal battery replacements by local watchmakers for a nominal fee. It has been an accurate and dependable watch and that is all that is needed. No need to have the latest fashions or to impress anyone.
I have an F1 Quartz on rubber and wear it as a daily beater. I have many other high end Swiss and can honestly say that the F1 is solidly built. Really enjoy wearing it!
I payed €1755 for this exact watch today. Really like the blue face and the orange looks great on it too. I've small wrists and and lookin at the watch in the display cabinet I was worried it'd look too big and bulky on my arm but to my surprise it sat well and looked great 😎 I've collected watches mosty life raging from €50 to €5000 I'm very happy with my purchase and that's all that really matters 😊
Ironically, for all the hate that Tag gets by the watch community my tag gets the most compliments of any of my others watches by everyday people who don’t really collect or know about horology and just happen to see it on my wrist. They just make some really good looking watches that are pretty well built imo.
Just paid $1500 for one yesterday for a 40th bday present to myself lol. I always wanted a Tag and now one is on its way. Worth it to some and not worth it to others. I couldn’t justify an extra $500-$600 for the auto movement. Maybe one day lol.
Congratulations on your new watch! How is it! I have a handful of quartz and automatic, now several of the automatic watches need service. Main setback.
I own the Tag Formula 1 (Nato strap quartz) I paid $750.00 back in 2019 for it. I love this watch as a weekend casual watch. Looks great and gets a lot of compliments. Still have original battery and keeps perfect time. Well worth the $750 and I could sell it for $600 now. This watch looks expensive in the watch and material are high quality.
great warcht, rock solid, have for 17 years, black dial, bought a rolex Datejust this year that I got for my 50th B-day but on daily basis I am always using my F1 TAG.
Just picked this up today for £750 and well happy with it. It's a 2021 and still under warranty and serviced in May '23 with all paperwork/cards etc. Nice compliment to my Monaco, which is only for special outings!
Good thing about a quartz, you're not always resetting the time as with an automatic. I have been thinking of this particular watch for some time. The chronographs are nice but that permanent "second hand" slightly covers the big 12 which I like. So many sites saying Longines and Oris are "better" but design is a big factor too and Tag Heuer just looks better. $1850 in Canada, but the savings on Jomashop etc. aren't enough to go to those places. I still don't get the big deal about a stamped clasp. I have a 43 mm Seiko 5 which fits my wrist perfectly, if your wrist is smaller get the same Formula 1 model in black which is 41mm.
Great review, and to answer your question re 'is this watch worth $1600' - the answer is a resounding NO. The beating heart of this watch is a $23 Rhonda movement (thats not necessarily a bad thing in itself) The pressed metal clasp and divers extension, as you pointed out, is pretty disgraceful. The seconds hand doesn't seem to hit any (or many) markers. I have $100 casios which do this consistently. The rest of the watch seems fine, but to put a market price tag in the region of $1600 is patently ridiculous.
But your Casio doesn't say Tag Heuer. A Toyota Camry might be good, but it doesn't say Lexus. It's basically the same car with a different name on it. For some people, that's the difference.
Yeah it's a nice looking watch that has a lot of positives, but the inexpensive quartz movement definitely doesn't justify the price. This watch in an automatic version (if they have one, I know they have some of the formula 1 in automatic) would be worth it. It would have what they Tag calls calibre 5, which is an ETA 2824 or maybe now days a sellita sw200. Then you have a solid swiss mechanical movement that is worth several hundred dollars for the movement.
@@jonathanwright8802 So far all my watches I bought, I got them on the 2nd hand market. I did pay for a TH F1 Quartz Chrono slightly under £500. What is great with Tag Heuer, they lose value a lot, especially the Quartz models if it's watch only. A full set cost around £1000, - the watch new cost around £1500,- but, as I don't care so much if the bracelet is a bit beaten up, as I put it onto a leather strap or nato/zulu on it, and I don't need the box and all the paperwork; you can find good watch only deals.

However if I was buying a more expensive watch I would definitely be buying an automatic movement... Sure you can buy a cheaper brand and have the automatic movement... But what's the point if it's going to cost so much in maintenance to service them, it makes no financial sense... But again I just bought the watch because it matched my vehicle... That was the only reason why I even purchased it in the first place...
