TLD is also unique in its financial longevity. According to the game director: "TLD has been a super steady success for us over the past 10+ years, with year-over-year revenue that is remarkably stable. Mostly this bucks the trend of games that tend to lose 25% of their revenue every year, until they wind down into a kind of maintenance mode." And this is despite the fact it's not a live service game. It has only one DLC.
That financial longevity needs to be looked at by other devs, I get that it’s not a one size fits all thing but man it would be refreshing to see more games with a monetization model similar to TLD.
Interesting take. I personally like TLD because it's the *only* survival game I've found that feels like survival. You're not building up an entire near-modern civilization with your bare hands, you're scrounging around for anything you can use to keep yourself alive and improvising many of the things you need, all with finite resources in the world, as very few resources you harvest or loot will respawn. As any good survival guide book will tell you, in a survival situation you're goal is to get back to civilization as quickly and safely as possible. Only problem with that in TLD is there's no civilization left.
The game is a game that if you were having PTSD, I would recommend playing. It has a harsh learning curve, but if you play the game, it gives you a sense of peace even as you struggle.
@@messydeskproductions4159 it's something about this solitude in the far territory, tho it's so dangerous as u go thru survival days, u still find peace by being alone, one on one with the nature, no people around, no drama, just u and wild nature that makes u forget about all the struggle and pain u feel in life by being around people, in the society, all these rules and chasing of vanity, but in the long dark u seem free, hide from the whole modern world, from everyone and it seems this danger brings so much peace, words can't explain, play or watch it, it's the only way to understand

Very Enjoyable Video Sir! My only critique is at 10:50, any type of tutorial would break & completely defeat the purpose of the game. The player lives, learns, and dies by the rules of the game and hopefully becomes more experienced with each new playthrough, and intern becomes way more in-depth with the mechanics without any kind of pop-up tutorial. In my humble opinion its better for the player to learn for themselves rather then being hand held, it makes for a much more immersive experience.
Algo ai finally giving me something worth watching this week TLD is a gem, criminally underplayed, yet rarely underrated, and a play that'll give you feelings you wont feel in any other game. Your comparison to Minecraft was great for the confused panic of early game, but i'd even say 'beta' minecraft holds a closer feeling to TLD. The endless solitude, fog to punctuate the emptiness, slow music, and your only real enemy being yourself and your own drive to continue. Fantastic video.
Just so you know, the story mode explores the first night of the geo-magnetic apocalypse, with people still being somewhat hopeful. Sandbox is the sort of sequel to the story mode, where almost everyone is dead, and you're almost alone on the island to witness the pasing of an age. As you wander the map, you can see the aftermath of the many events that happen in the story mode, too.
Have the developers actually said that the sandbox world is the same as the story world but later? I see it more as two separate canons. The extremely well supplied survivors you meet in the story mode wouldn’t just die. And from the teaser at the end of episode 4, Pleasant Mills seems to be a pretty established community. It’s fair to say the setting in the long dark is an apocalypse, but it wouldn’t even come close to wiping out civilization.
@thevenator3955 In the "Perilous Constraint" update video, Raphael, the director of the game, says *"In the aftermath of the events of episode 4, you can see that the blackrock penitentiary is partially destroyed."* to explain why the prison is destroyed even in Survival mode. Raphael saying this confirms it, but there is in game evidence as well. For example, you can find a note in the prison directly referencing the fire that happened at the end of episode 4, written by one of the convicts who chose to stay in the prison instead of joining Mathis to follow Mackenzie. The tales trilogy in survival also reveals important context about Wintermute, and will be very relevant in episode 5. It's also worth mentioning that not everyone is dead in the sandbox, as you can talk to Sutherland on the radio and it's likely some unreachable parts of the island also have survivors.
@@thevenator3955 Yes, they are the same. Survival is some days to weeks after the main story. Enough time for everyone to perish or leave. Also, survival just has that development limitation. aye , while its not quite my cup of tea for game play i do love these games for how they succeed in what so many other survival games fails at 'specially the american ones in some cases when the whole 'exceptionalism x species/conquer nature!' , is as said the humbling of facing the powers and energies that courses through nature and either adapting to be harmonious with them or being withered away or crushed by them as walls only keep out so much cold , fuel only last so long for the fires , every moment burns so many calories etc even as a civilization you only achieve more then daily survival by respecting nature not trying to subdue it , for then it just leets you be crushed by the forces it held in cheek
hmm , i wonder how history would have developed if those expeditions in real life when the rescue ships reached the polar circle latitudes and rescued the last survivors ''wich if i recall correctly indeed hade survived in part due to cannibalism of those that succumbed to the cold'' , either way when finding ..being told tales of megalithic ''monoliths'' and other 'eldritch' infrastructure , that be of a civilization that reached the practical bio engineering and nanobot stadium then ..astroid.. super vulcano eruptions hitting an already strip mined eco system ehm sound familiar ? either way , that lvl of tech making dangerously experimental but at least functional ..engram development.. as if you can 'sleep' the same way a computer can in low power mode that is even more resource efficient then hibernation and with tech refined to nano expertise hardware capable to 'gently' mine or flat out 'softly' tap the mantle itself for raw materials and constantly repair , adapt and continue to improve efficiency and above all
respond intelligently with refined V.I to threats aka , when the super powers of the coal & steel age send exploration in force and flat out starting to build double railway highway to the edge of the furthest canadian landmass to speed up resupply and potential reinforcement of said 'exploration fleet' well , 'monoliths' not just wakes up but more pierces the ice around the polar cap , high density tungsten solid railgun rounds accelerated from the monoliths caps to the point they cause flashing 'lines' in the frigid air cleaving ships , igniting entire coal and munition supplies instantly from kinetic impact energy conversion
and behind monoliths , zigurats and pyramid caps hinting of the mind numbing vast complex beneath releasing swarms of drone constructs , and legions of walking ones
all of it turning the supposed rail high way to supply the ''righteous god blessed expidition'' into an ancient eldritch civilizations path into a thawed world , where young new civilization starts burn under remorseless ruthless constructs march while ancient smiths is ever so carefully roused into full awake states , and with fully functional construct bodies to mimic their biological ones mm yes , and most precious of all sharing space with the ancients engrams in the hearts of pyramids , servers with data on artificial reconstruction of their species , along with schematics for gestation chambers all kept safe on its own power
would an lost world have sought to claim a new one to butcher the new civilization and species humans ,or would it have sought to coexist ? would a young worlds civilization been to religious to accept co-existence ?
