Awesome clear introduction to Procreate! Thanks for the step-by-step in-video instructions. I have my own convenient method of tracing a photo -- change it to B&W on my laptop, print it out to the size I need, and use a light table to trace directly onto watercolour paper. But there are clearly many advantages to Procreate, like smoothing out my wobbly lines, and working in layers, and undoing, and saving files.... I may have to put an iPad and Procreate on my wish list!
I hope you don’t take this offensively, seriously, I mean that… I have sold a lot of paintings… I used to say the exact same thing I didn’t want to spend my time drawing when I could be painting. And I did that for years. But about a year ago, I started drawing everything and my painting skills have changed to. I used to say that my favorite part of, the process was the painting, but I think that’s because I only really traced most of my paintings. I’m now absolutely love the drawing part. It really challenges my brain. And I should also state that I am now retired and just keep a daily sketchbook. Enjoy your day!
No offense at all. It’s wonderful that after years of painting, you learned to draw and love it. One of my personal projects this year is to improve my drawing skills. My motivation is to learn ink & wash style of watercolor. I think drawing scares a lot of people and keeps them from exploring their creativity. I hope starting with tracing helps more people unlock their creativity and try new things.
I think that both points are valid. As an ultra beginner ‘artist’, I think tracing is a good way to begin to learn watercolour painting, in the same way that you’d give a child a colouring book with crayons. No, they won’t learn to draw, but that can come later. I find having only one step to complete (wetting my paints) before I start painting makes it a lot less intimidating. When I ‘draw’ (copy by hand from a learn to draw book), it’s often several days or sometimes even weeks before I paint the image. I’ve also heard that the best way to learn how to improve your watercolour painting skills is by drawing, which makes a lot of sense as you’re figuring our proportions, values etc., prior to filling it in with watercolour paints. Personally, right now, I’m just trying to figure out the difference between warm and cool watercolour paints, especially the primaries! 😊
Great points. I feel the same way about just getting into the painting. I am working on my drawing skills in parallel. For now, I’m more comfortable with a brush in my hand 😊 Color is tricky. If you haven’t seen it yet, this video might help with the cool and warm primaries: ruclips.net/video/sg0ynNwSd7o/видео.htmlsi=7cBF9CI3zEh-5uMI
Procreate reminds me of Photoshop I used at a small local newspaper. I would have preferred Procreate for its greater simplicity. Your instructions are clear and straightforward. Good job.
You have saved my sanity! Yesterday was another day of frustration to the max, while completing a drawing for a portrait watercolor. I said to myself, “I’ve GOT to find another way”! And then during my morning iPhone trolling, you magically appeared! Many thanks for your clear, calm instructions and generosity in freely sharing your knowledge with all of us. I’ve been a “purist” about doing my own drawings, but at the age of 81, it’s time to stop stressing and enjoy painting! Thanks again!❤
Yay! This tutorial was perfect timing for you. You’re going to love Procreate. One of my favorite Procreate teachers on RUclips is @brookeglaser - she’s really great at explaining the ins and outs of the app.
Thank you. Your tutorials are very informative, organized, and easy to follow because you are speaking at a speed that I can absorb. So many RUclipsrs speak way to fast.
Thank you for this video which did my guilt fly away because I trace a lot for my paintings from my personal photos ...or other ideas I pick on the net. At last I can enjoy painting freely without thinking I am a lousy painter because I don't draw them first . Thanks Thanks Thanks
I like that you share this technique, I think that drawing is an amazing skill and very important as we create our own style. That being said tracing is very helpful when learning watercolor painting, even tracing your own drawings so you’re able to paint your own work without the worry of messing it up. Nothing is wrong with tracing as you’re learning a new skill. Thanks for this video.
Thank you so much for this video. I thought it was just me - hate to draw (and not very good at it to begin with) but really enjoy water coloring or painting.
Jackie thank you so much for all of the wonderful information you share. It is great and overwhelming to find some many instructors for watercolor , I think your are one of the best if not the BEST 😃 You go to the point and your instructions are clear. Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙏🏼❤️
This is incredibly helpful, thank you. I would love to be able to do some more complex painting, and this is a way I can do it, despite my drawing challenges.
Thanks SO much Jackie for sharing this!! What would you suggest if I wanted the image to be much larger for a larger canvas??? Is there a change for Procreate or would it be one of the free ones??
You can create a custom canvas size in Procreate. After you tap the plus to add a canvas, tap the overlapping black rectangles in the upper right corner. Then you can set a custom size. After exporting the file, you can print it on multiple pieces of paper or have a printer print it on larger paper. Another option is to project the finished drawing onto your paint surface.
I agree digital tools are useful if u just want to get started painting but once you can paint an understanding of tone is essential and drawing and sketching and rendering gives you skills to see tone and then be able to paint with form and dimension
I agree with the others who say you are a very talented teacher. I am going to be buying an iPad as part of my retirement gift to myself. I’m sure I will revisit this video after I do so.
Really great tutorial, thank you. What if you want to scale an image to a much larger piece of WC paper. Do you have any recommendations for that? I have seen a few artists use projectors - have you tried this and do you have any recommendations?
You’re welcome. In Procreate you can create a custom canvas size. After tapping + to add a canvas, select the overlapping black rectangles in the upper right corner. Then you can set the size to match your painting. You could print the larger image at a print shop. I think there’s also a way to print a large image tiled on regular size paper, which you could tape together.
@@JackieHernandezWatercolorconverting the image to pdf when you download your line drawing in procreate will allow you to print a tiled version via adobe😊
I wonder if you could do a trace-for floral line art series. It is never so straightforward to simplify when looking at complex flowers. I was intrigued by your sketchbook discipline and I thought of asking you to consider this art request. I think skilful floral line art takes experience. Florals are readily available all around us so there is no danger of copyright issues. ❤Cheers.
Great topic idea. I will add it to my list. For a quick tip, if working from a photo, I would turn it into a value study first. That always helps me see what the most important lines are to trace. Check out my How to Design a Painting video for more on using a value study in the tracing process.
I started out doing tracings, but occasionally I like to draw (but I am not very good at drawing...LOL). If I really want to start painting quickly - I often will use the traceables.
Thank you so much for mentioning the copyright infringement. Photographers around are so grateful when this is acknowledged, as our income is often compromised/stolen by this. Thank you, thank you! 😊
I don’t have my iPad handy right now. I’m just wondering why the tracing layer isn’t moving independently of the photo layer, causing it to not connect to the photo. Maybe I missed something.
If you don’t have a layer selected with the arrow tool, then everything on the canvas moves together. You can rotate and zoom the canvas and everything stays together. If you selected the tracing layer and tapped the arrow in the upper left, then that layer would have a bounding box and you could move it separately. Hope that helps.
Keep in mind.. that all these "taps and gestures" are customizable.. so you can't just say "tab 2 fingers is how you undo".. because your 2 finger tap isn't the same as my 2 finger tap if it has been changed. Better to say the default gestures are.... 2 fingers to tap.
Thanks so much for this. I am considering buying an Ipad. Do you have any tips for what to look for when buying a pre-owned one? I will be watching this several times while I learn how to use it. I also want to use an iPad for editing my painted pieces for card printing. Thanks again!!
If you plan to use it for art and editing, I would recommend getting the larger screen size. You can save $ by choosing the WiFi model. It just means you have to be connected to WiFi at home (or elsewhere) for internet access. Make sure you choose one with enough storage for how you plan to work. If you want to store everything on your iPad, you may want to upgrade the storage. If you have iCloud storage or can store files on an external hard drive you may not need as much storage. Hope that’s helpful.
@colleensmith2038 Me too!!! I dis a little checking and I posted above and am waiting to see what she gives as an answer...but I saw that one of the top rated apps that was said to be very very similar to ProCreate is an app called HiPaint. I am reading reviews and watching videos on it now. Don't like that it collects data from me, but it is a free app so that's why they do it. I'd rather purchase an app and NOT have it steal all my info and sell it!
