the break up of the Soviet Union and the complete chaos that followed in the 90ies can be attributed to all this. People just stopped caring, they lost all hope and more importantly there wasn't many places that could hold people accountable for their mistakes that cost people theirs lives. The Chechen wars are a perfect example of this. So many young soldiers and Chechen civilians died and suffered while a couple of corrupt shithead politicians got rich off the conflict. These accidents were bound to happen. Just remember the Russian president at the time was Boris Yeltsin, a drunkard that most people didn't respect and who just gave away parts government owned businesses to corrupt devils who just exploited everything and everyone to the maximum and used all that money to buy houses in the carribean and elsewhere while people in Russia were left to rot, pensioners that built up the country and worked so hard in their lives and were guaranteed a pension suddenly lost that pension which ended up being pocketed by corrupt officials that are still in office to this day. The worst part of it all is that nothing has changed between the United States and Russia. They still have a bunch of sanctions and still see Russia as an enemy almost even moreso that they did with the Soviet Union. We're living in pretty terrible times but people are just too distracted with media and technology to even notice or think for themselves any more.

I've seen this on Air Crash Investigations, but hearing the actual cockpit voice recording is absolutely stunning, in any sense of the word. Many thanks for providing that. I don't understand any Russian but that was one drunk-sounding captain! Slurring his words, not listening to or not understanding the ATC directions. And a first officer who didn't really know what he was doing. I used to work as a travel agent during the Soviet era. Aeroflot were nicknamed Aerogrot. Bad pilots, bad inflight service, and badly maintained aircraft. They have improved but...... this one is like a throw-back!

@ D.K. The ATC guy knew, or else he would not have explicitly asked the pilots to follow his instructions strictly. He was trying to babysit them through the landing, by asking them to calculate vectors to the final approach... this is something ATCs normally don't do. Asking the crew if they were okay is also another giveaway. Approach ATCs normally keep the radio communications short and only use only standard phraseologies, because they are managing so many incoming and outgoing traffic, there is no time to have conversations that are not direct approach instructions. I wonder if the poor guy actually saw the plane crashed into front of his eyes...
