I live with my mom and was able to watch this video get our toilet flushing again without having to pay a plumber to come over. Very informative and detailed. Thank you so much!! I feel very accomplished and proud of myself! Any woman can do it!
@jamjamsc26 I'm here a year later 2022, and left another comment just now (please see, I'm after advice). I'm same as you with my mum. Great that you did the job yourself. Well done! Although I've always done my own decorating etc and even fitted two new ceiling lights in the past, this job has got me worried. My toilet is the push button type and I don't know anything about plumbing. Can't afford a plumber, I know I'll get ripped off (with only 2 weeks to go before Christmas 2022)🥴.
13:23 "The smooth goes to the bottom of the siphon". OMG THANK YOU! This is the fourth video I've watched on this subject and yours is the first one to include this small but vital piece of information.
I've just fixed my toilet thanks to this video! Initially it was leaking from where the pipe enters the toilet itself. It's been like this for months if not years. I'd tried to seal it several times with only temporary success. I had no idea it was a simple as replacing a rubber fitting! Then, just recently, it's been getting more and more difficult to flush the toilet, until a couple of days ago it just became impossible. A quick RUclips search and I found this video! Not only have I managed to get the toilet flushing again but I've also fixed the leaky flush pipe! What I will say is that the nut under the cistern needs to be done up stupidly tight. I kept having leaks until I did it up really REALLY tight. Total cost was less than £15, and that included the pliers I needed to buy as well! Thank you for your help 🙂
Toilet decided to go and break a couple of days before Christmas! To avoid high call-out fees or a lengthy wait into the New Year I decided to see if I could fix the problem myself. I come across this video and it was great!! I’m a complete novice but I found Derek very easy to follow. I was able to replace the syphon on a close coupled toilet in under an hour, and that was taking my time and taking the opportunity to give the cistern a good clean behind it. The replacement syphon cost a little under £7 and works perfectly. Thank you very much!
I just fixed my toilet thanks to you and this video. Excellent, thank you so much! There's no way we could afford a plumber, we do have insurance cover for such things but there's a £60 excess and considering I just fixed it myself for next to nothing, I can't thank you enough.
I saw a video where the design of the toilet required removing the whole cistern from the wall! I am so glad my toilet was like this video. Very easy to follow, job done in about 20 minutes. I was unable to remove the pipe due to bad design around the toilet, so used the old washers, but so far it hasn't leaked. Excellent.
Wonderful information. A big thank you for explaining the different WC types, I would have purchased the wrong parts until I watched your video. Very nicely done and thank you for your time and effort.
this was super helpful. I just got quoted £240 for changing the siphon and £350 for changing the cistern. Now I can see how easy it is I feel that the price is ridiculous. Many thanks.
Very many thanks DEREK for your most informative video. Replaced my siphon this morning - saving a lot of hastle and money . First class explanation and demonstration . Well done.
Derek you are the man l loved the story about where crapping came from!!! But you have just answered about an issue that l have at the moment and l thank you for that. Keep up the great work believe me it is appreciated!!!
Thanks a lot, for showing us the method to replace the Syphon. We are having this similar problem. I have the confidence to do it myself now.I am a pensioner, so this will save me some money. You are brilliant at teaching practical methods.
Ah, you've saved me. I followed your instruction up to the baling out when I remembered that I have a 12v oil extractor pump lying around. I rigged it to a 12v power adaptor and the job was painless. I repaired mine instead of replacing it by swapping out the diaphragm. Thank you for your help.
Thank you very much for this video. I didn't know you could make a new diaphragm/valve, I thought you could not take the valve assembly apart. going to make my own diaphragm now. Much appreciated. Saved me £22 !!
I'm literally doing this right now, following it step by step. The previous owner painted over inlet valve so I shut off the water completely. To get the water out of the cistern I used a McDonalds cup as they are more flexible and warn work socks, they'll get cleaned later. I'm now off to B&Q so I'll edit this later to let you know how it all goes. (A few hours later) Toilet now flushes perfectly every time and no leaks. Thanks for the tutorial, if I can follow this anyone can.
Thanks so much Derek. Have been waiting for a plumber to replace my siphon but it's impossible to get a plumber for small jobs as they're all too busy on big building jobs these days. Watched your video and had a go myself and it took me less than an hour. 🙏
Spot on easy to follow and gives me confidence to change the siphon. Up here in the Highlands plumbers are like hens teeth. Very much appreciated. Cheers.
Thank you so much. You told me everything I needed to know and made the toilet syphon interesting too...and all without being patronising.....I think you could teach anything. This has been really helpful. Thaink you
Really good 👍🏻. Liked how you showed the old one and the condition of the old washer and how you compared it with a brand new one. Thanks Derek (AKA plumber/gas engineer/plasterer/laminate flooring fitter. Sorry if I have missed anything) Asian Jon. Training.
Greats video Derek.....remember reconnecting flush tubes after the pupil would disconnect them and flood out the school toilets ,sure many became successful Plumbers ..LOL
replaced a diaphragm recently only to find that the flush was slow and fan like so wouldn't take solids, even paper away fully. Took pipe out of pan entry and found a large piece of the old one restricting flow, no wonder....VERY WORTH Checking when apart on replacement. Regards,
Thanks man great explanation great video seriously appreciated it don't be wanting anyone in the house been using the down stairs toilet now we have 2 toilets again.
A short piece of rubber hose, fill with water while holding a finger over bottom end - place in cistern and point into bowel at a point lower then the bottom of the cistern will create a vacuum and drain the water. Lot easier than using a cup.
It went great....Turned the stop cock off, did the work...However as the stop cock hadn't been moved in 10 years it broke when I tried to turn it back on. Had to call an emergency plumber to come out and turn the mains off and replace stop cock. Haha. The siphon worked though and no leaks.
Thanks for this, just done mine in under 1 hour, (2nd one I've done). I'm surprised that none of these video's on RUclips are using Plummers tape on the thread, which I always do.
I had same problem I just replaced the diaphragm plastic seal I didn’t need to turn water off just unscrewed the symphon took it out replaced the seal. Mine was a closed couple toilet. I couldn’t turn water off as hard water stops me turning off the valve on the water inlet.
spot on! Now I know I can get the toilet to flush properly and I only need to change is the washer in the syphon (I'm tight). Hopefully It'll stop the long flappy pipe leading to the toilet behind the bath sounding like a trumpet when it's flushed too. Don't think it will, but we live in hope.
Very clearly explained. Can you specify the make of the new siphone assembly you used (i.e. the black and red unit) and where it can be obtained? Many thanks.
Great video. Intermittent problem with my toilet flushing. Will have to fix soon. Might be a stupid question; what type /grade of plastic did you use? Thanks
Can you leave the Swan neck pipe on without taking it off because mine has tech 7 on the rubber seal and if I take it off I know it will leak...I did put new seal on the pipe that goes into toilet but it still leaked so a plummer put tech 7 around it..
very good. cistern was leaking from pan pipe and it seemed the inside washers which hold the siphon get worn or disintegrate. i tightened the large nut and it seems ok. Same with inlet pipe with washers on the inside. any instant glue which sets in water to stop any further leaks you can use?
Thank you for explaining how it works. The issue I have is that after flushing water is still flowing. It does not stop the flow at a 100%. Any explanation?
Is there any chance you know any cheap plumbers in Stockton-on-Tees area we have all the parts that you have shoulders on there it's just I'm a woman and I haven't got a clue how to do it is

Great tip! Just replaced my siphon and this saved me loads of time.
It's probably best not to point the rubber hose into bowel!
Thanks. Excellent helpful video.
Thanks really helpful
Replacing one tomorrow, will let you know how it goes.

Do you have to use new knots and washers when putting back the fush pipe?

You picked a nice and easy one there

That will probably be the washer in the float valve that makes the trumpet noise
