    Great informative video. I wonder how many people have been talked into having new windows fitted. When all they needed to do was put new seals in.

    Thanks, I hadn't even considered this as a draught source - I'd already replaced all the glazing with lower u-value units and that has made a huge difference but have now noticed where the seals on the opening windows are not quite perfect allowing condensation to form when it's very cold - I'll be measuring up for new seals 👍

    Additional tip:
    If it’s cold on the day you plan to change then rubber seal or it has been stored in a cold place. Put the new seal in a bucket of warm, soapy water for 15 mins before you start to make the rubber more compliant.

      Yes, indeed. OR keep the seal roll in a warm place indoors for a couple of days before fitting (eg airing cupboard). Thanks for sharing.

      Ha ha, my window seals are all 20 years old and really these seals are only good for a decade, maybe 12 years. I engineered door and window seals into Discovery 2 - I really should have done this some years ago (but then I wouldn't have been making this video, lol)

    Check your hinges, especially on top hung windows. Best way to check is from outside with windows locked shut if you can .
    See if there is any play in the window from the frame
    If so you will also need to replace the hinges too
    New seal alone will not eradicate the draught

    Firstly they are not patio doors they are french doors, patio doors slide.
    Try doing that off a ladder. I've been in this business for forty years and do all kinds of repairs. Can't wait for the next video.

  • @georgeyoung8723
    @georgeyoung8723 3 месяца назад

    Everything perfect except when you have a single gasket all the way around you should start in the centre at the "top" of the window not the bottom. Any water that hits the pane of glass will travel down so to have a join at the bottom leave the possibility of water penetration.👍🏻

    I had two windows that were really draughty, took a look at the seals and found that there was over an inch long gap between the seal ends, had some spare seal so measured and cut the size needed to fill the gap and presto! no more draught.

      Replacing the seals on the back door, kitchen windows and patio doors has made a huge difference - AND these are all on the leeward side of the house. Next week I'm gonna work my way through doing all the windows on the front of the house, which is the windward side. Energy prices going the way they are, makes it so much more worthwhile than ever before.

    my window is similar to yours top hung and handle at bottom. Seal is okay all around apart from 1 corner to the right side of where the handle is. For some reason there is a considerable gap compared to rest of window? Is this the seal?

    So, you measured one part of the window as 6.5mm and another 5mm- does this mean you bought two different size seals?

    • @AbouttheHouse0
      @AbouttheHouse0  2 года назад +3

      No, one seal to sseal all round. the gap is bound to vary around a window so the seal must fill the largest gap.
