That an amazing comment, thanks 😁😁
Awesome video so clear and clear. Thank you so much!
No problem, I'm glad the video was helpful!
Good video. 1 thing to add - the seal you're using is known as offset bubble seal. The 'fatter' part of the bubble should be installed towards the outer edge of whatever you're installing it to. This ensures more surface area/sealing contact when the window or door is closed 👍
Keep up the good work Fowler.
Hi, thanks for your informative comment!

Important safety note: because hinges take the load well and we casually open/close windows with ease it's easy to forget these things can be heavy! Double glazing weighs around 20kg per sqm. Add to that the frame and locking mech (and perhaps lead!) and you could soon be hanging out of an upstairs window with a casement that weighs the same as a full suitcase - at arms length.
You won't know how much it weighs until you've removed your last screw whilst holding the window with one hand. For your first I advise not being alone and make sure nothing or nobody is beneath the window you're working on 👍
I did say on the video that ou don,t need to remove the window but i have just to make this video clearer. You are right they can be heavy and it is definetly easier with 2 people!
Love your videos easy to follow.😘
Thats good to hear, im glad you liked my videos!
Seems a straight forward job. I was surprised that the corners were not cut to form the shape better, but that risks letting water in, so if you can get them round the radius, it’ll be better.
One thing I would caution though is to be prepared for the weight of the window if you’re unscrewing it. They can be very heavy and it’s easy to bend or deform the hinges when they’re partially attached. Been there, done that, …
Yeah, i agree about the weight of the window. However, this can be done without taking the window out!
Great tip. Thanks
No problem, thanks for your comment!
I knew you could do this!!! People were telling me no you cant, you have to replace the whole window!!😮
Let me know how you get on, and thanks for your comment 👍
I'm happy I just came across this video as I have to do this job this week. Now a subscriber! 👍👍👍
That's brilliant. it's a really straightforward job! I used this seal amzn.to/3OMzQ3c

@@FixitwithFowler I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos, but you aren't half giving me a pile of jobs for the weekend haha. Keep them coming.

I got new windows fitted last September, they are shocking, I was fitter around Glasgow / Central Belt area for 3 years back around 2007 - when the installers left I had a good lookover their work, they did do a decent job tbf all bar the inside of one window, that one window was done by Stevie Wonder ''some random fitter that showed up'' the silicone job he done was really terrible, something I'll address when I decorate next time, I have a double window in the living room and one of them makes a very annoying noise when it's windy, had a few return visits but I'm now sick of hearing the crap they talk.
When the weather improves I'll fix that window myself.
Been flicking through some of Yur videos fella as every day's a school day.
Thanks and Sub'd

Isn't it strange how there are so many spellings for the same thing? Thanks for your comment 👍
@@FixitwithFowler Yep, lots of changes when English hit our shores. 😉
@fv1291 lol, it's hard to cover all spellings and pronunciations, but I try my best 👌
Living on the third floor of an apartment building I’m not certain if I could confidently remove the window to replace the seals. Your video has the advantage of being on the ground floor.
Yeah you have a lot to lose if you drop it. Maybe get someone to help hold it and even attach a rope through the hinges for added security?
👍👍👍.Thank you
Thanks for your comment 👍
I love you Steve

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks 😁
Great video mate can you not add where we buy these new seals from a link please
Hi, i have them in my amazon shop but this is a direct link amzn.to/3KaQWF9
This is absolutely brilliant for an average DIYer, do you by any chance do the same on doors?
You can do the same thing on some doors. However, you will need to remove a small section of the door seal to check that it sits in a groove and is not just glued on. Thanks for your comment 👍
what is worth a mention is that when in doubt of excluder type, online stores like gbdiystore do offer sending a sample package with different profiles as well as help ID based on pictures. Also with the new seals in place, it might be a consideration to relax the 'winter' setting of the adjustment to either 'neutral' or 'summer'?
Yes, good shout. However, these windows don't have such an adjustment
I used to do this for a job we used to super glue the corners start and end cuts . And router the weld so the seal went round better.
Thanks for your comment 👍
i still fabricate, residence, dec 2800, alunet, gluin is as per manuals, 45 cuts in the corners not the middle of the sash or frame,
welded joints if you need to replace the gasket has to be glued.
mechanical joints rubber externals butt joints no glue, frame butt joints again glued.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, all this is new to me. Sub'd'
Thanks for your comment and subscribing to my channel!
Used to make double glazing frames for a living the corners were always popping outs at first before I got the knack. Frames, sashes seals but I think (beading?) was the worst
Yeah, the corners are definitely the most difficult!
Very useful tip.. 👍👍
I'm glad you think so. Don't forget to look at my other videos!
How many windows can a tub of seal do? Great video!
It depends on the size of the window and if you are replacing one seal or both. It will tell you the length of the seal on the tub!
Two of my rear double glazed windows would not close properly. Have to move the window frame from outside so it can close and be locked. Have you done a video showing how to adjust the windows? Thanks
Hi, im doing a video on that, and i will be released tomorrow!
Ive got condensation inbetween the double glazed windows. Bet you have a solution for that too 😉
Unfortunately you will need to replace the glazing. Thanks for your comment 👍
Hi.
Could you do a video on how to install a outside door light ?
I can't see the lock at night as I come in .
I only have a light switch on the inside with no other power source to connect it to .
Thanks.
Maybe i will do one in the future
Thanks for the vid. Has helped my identify where a cold draft was coming in and what I should do to fix it.
One issue though is that the current seal on the frame (not the moving window) has gone so brittle I can't get it to peel out. In fact it pretty much disintegrates with a touch. Do you have any tips on how to remove dried out and brittle seals?
That's a good question, maybe a small screwdriver and a sharp knife?? Thanks for your comment, and I am glad you liked the video 👍
Thanks, I will give this a go.@@FixitwithFowler
@@Kazzakmaybe try putting some heat into the seal with a hairdryer or something, might come out easier then.
That's a good idea!
Is this the same for doors too, mine seem to have no seals on the door only on the frame (double upvc patio doors). There is a slot there for it though.
You might be able to add a seal, but without seeing the doors, it's hard to say. Sorry im not much help!
Any tips on doing the upper floors, where you can't get a ladder to the outside?
You can take the window out if you're careful and get someone to hold the window for you.
You don't need to access the outside as the opener seal faces the house and the frame seal is easily accessible.
Standing on a 2 step/hop up inside helps with reach to get to the top of the opener but steady! No falling out of the bloody window!!
Will that type of seal universal and be ok for any upvc door / window
You will need to double-check the profile of the existing seal first.
Thanks Steve that's a job I will be doing. Is it easy to replace the seals that touch the glass as mine have gone brittle and when cleaning the windows it leaves black marks where you touch the seal.
Yeah, it is really easy and makes a massive difference!
removing the glass and refitting the unit after is not something you would be able to do without correct tools.
Hi John, I think Steve got the wrong end of the stick about your query. Here's a couple of pointers:
If your windows are internally glazed (glazing/bead removed inside) then there's not much you can do about changin seal that meets the glazing as they're usually integral.
If your windows are older and externally glazed the internal seal touching the glass is known as a wedge gasket. These are easily replaceable and can be pryed out gently with a stiff scraper. Once removed you need to measure the resultant gap (mm) and search online for wedge gaskets. Loads of companies supply so just give them your measurement. If you're not confident in measuring you can send them a small cutting off the end of your gasket so they can match the profile. I hope this helps.
@@neilhurley3995 of course you can change gasket in the bead
Profile depending..
@@neilhurley3995 Thank you so much for your reply it helps a lot, unfortunately for me my windows are internally glazed.
Is it a similar process if you need to replace the rubber at the edge of the glass?
No, unfortunately not. You need to remove the beading, but I'm unsure if you can replace the rubber next to the glass
Looking at the diagram on the seal dimensions, the bit that you push into the slot seems offset and not in the centre so does it have to go in a certain way? Many thanks
Ideally, it needs to match the existing seal
The wider side of the bubble needs to face the outside edge of whichever extrusion you're fitting it to. I hope this helps.
@@neilhurley3995 thank you, yes it does.
where do you buy the rubber seal from please x
Hi, there is a link to the rubber seal in the description or just follow this link amzn.to/4916VAf thanks for your comment!
what if the hinge pivot points are worn? packing extra gasket onto the frame and or sash edge will just mask a isssue,
Yes, that's true. In that case, it will be new hinges, which happens to be a video i have planned for a few weeks' time!
Where would I buy the seals from?
You can find them here amzn.to/4bFFZrx
Are the seals a standard size etc or do they differ in size ?
They are normally a standard size, i used these seals amzn.to/3HO6QnJ
seals differ in size when it comes to differnet profiles, residence to eurocell differs for example, they are not the same what so ever, depths thicknes channel sizes.
We're can I find the window seal ?
I got mine from amazon amzn.to/42CkaoE

Most of the seals are not fit for purpose and I’ve used the one your using but good video
Cheers for the comment 👍
do i have to take the windows off?
No you can do it with them in situ
@@FixitwithFowler many thanks and a great video. 👍
One size doesn’t fit all. There are several comments here questioning your method and your answers - but you just heart them!?
Not a good look.
I can’t seem to find the window seals anywhere 😢
These are what i used amzn.to/485pOkn
Called window gaskets
amzn.to/42ywRky
Where do you buy window seals? Is "window seals" the correct name?
I got mine from amazon amzn.to/4aDROO1 this is the link. Hope that helps you!
I got mine from Wickes -in store. UPVC replacement seal for windows and doors. Draught excluder.
How do you know if it's the seal that's letting the cold air in or the double glazing that's failed?
If it's the double glazing you normally get condensation between the glass or the rubber at the edge of the glass, it becomes deformed. If it's the seal on the feame and window, you will be able to feel the cold air from there.
if DG fails the Argon inside has gone and the inside of the unit condenses up betwwen the internal hot layer(room) and external cold layer (outside)
Me again
Company I worked for used bloody pop rivets instead of screws for speed of fabrication...Can u imagine the damage to the plastic trying to drill them out .....
I'm rearly liking the vids though .
Should hopefully give people the confidence to do it themselves
Yes thats the idea, give people confidence to do the jobs themselves. You don't need to take the window out to replace the seals but it does make it easier!
nothign to do with production speeds its what the profile desginer called for when using fixings...
STORMPATROL or STORMGUARD?
Stormguard
thank you
I used Stormguard seals
Can't get a giraffe in my place so no
Lol, that's a shame! you need bigger windows 😆
