- The first day of the annual Royal Shrovetide Football match
The annual Royal Shrovetide football game is said to be the world's oldest, largest, longest, and perhaps angriest street football game.
The game is played between the Up'ards, those born north of the River Henmore, the river that divides the town, and the Down'ards, those born south of the river.
It is played with a hand-painted, cork-filled ball.
The pitch is a no man’s land between two watermills, Sturston Mill and Clifton Mill, which serve as the goals at either end of the town about three miles apart.
Any number of players may take part in this very thinly refereed game, providing they can claim to be Up'ards or Down'ards.

I don't even know what I'm watching but I like it.
I am a romanian guy and yesterday i seen for the first time this tradition. Respect. Nice people! I love it!❤
Somehow it looks like a national game on horses as kok boru
What's the score
2 -0 Up'Ards. Final result after 2 days.
Loved the game. Well played. The transition from land to water to land was just seamless.
Very nice People. Very interesting tradition.salute from bulgaria. 🎉
Watching this brings me great joy and makes me proud to be British.
The STEAM coming off of the players bodies in the water from sheer body heat is incredible.
Mebbe 'div 1 and 2" players should be made to participate. Stop all the fakin n faggin that happens in the modern version of this joyous game.
Its funny on 0954 when the man cupcakes into his pint tumbler and smells it 😂
Still waiting VAR decision 60 were offside in the river 😂😂
Meh
Muffin me 🇬🇧
Made in Britain, baby!
WHO ever you are who captured these moments has done a tremendous job, does anyone have any history on this annual event its origins and famous moments etc...
How does one qualify for this Match?
Shrovetide Football 2024 0819am 14.2.24 and the guys in the know should all wear same coloured shirts so they can pass the ball to their cohort...
Hiya, I'm from Ashbourne and i believe the game dates back to medieval times! There is a wikipedia page and local resources for a more in depth explanation but its been going on in the town for hundreds of years :) In terms of famous moments theres been a few famous people 'turn up' the ball (throw the ball into the crowd at the start of the game) including Prince Charles (now king). Theres honestly so many fun local stories to come out of the game, i'm sure it would be really interesting to research! Also theres not really any qualifications needed however, generally it is played by men and is a 'locals game' so anyone isn't from the area shouldn't be getting involved, other than that anyone can join in (if they're brave enough!), i know loads of people who play! Like i said, i'm from the town and its an amazing tradition that i'm proud to be a part of, this year i even did some journalism work covering the game!
Brilliant. We did an interview with a lovely young man. But we didn't think we would actually see ourselves. Ashbourne Shrovetide is such a wonderful atmosphere. We try to watch the ball thrown into the crowd and then move out of the way of the hug and watch from a distance. I can't describe the excitement and happiness of the crowd. It's even good for oldies to watch from a distance. 😊
Mark will be pleased to be called a young man. Glad you enjoyed it. It’s a fab event.
Bit tame compared to Atherstone ball game
Hot Fuzz and the whicker man springs to mind
Seems very reasonable. I like it !!!❤
😮😮😮
On 2nd thought let's not go to Ashbourne it is a silly place 😆
Brilliant
I don't know what did happen? They were moving the ball to some goal, or they were trying just to hold it?
There are two 'goals' about 3 miles apart in villages north and south of Ashbourne, where the event starts. the 'Up'ards' try to get it north and the 'Down'ards' go south. The Game ends when the ball is touched on either goal before 10pm.

Turn up next Shrove Tuesday in Ashbourne and pick a side. They would be glad to have you. Or you could always try motorball - football on motorbikes - ruclips.net/video/PsyWZ6o2DUE/видео.html
