The Eton Wall Game - Arguably one of the world's most elite sports.

  • This mishmash of rugby and soccer has been played in one spot at an exclusive English private school ... for more than 300 years.
It happens on the same strip of land with a long, slightly curved wall down one side and often devolves into a multi-limbed pile of shrieking schoolboys.
Two teams try to get the ball into a scoring zone, then kick it against a target (a garden door for one team and a tree for the other). Sounds simple, until you realize that the method of actually moving the ball into position involves all the players on both teams piling up along the wall and slowly inching the ball upfield, to the extreme discomfort of any players buried in the pile who'll spend 30 minutes having their faces slowly scraped along the mortar.
Every now and again, the ball pops free, and someone boots it upfield, which precipitates a crazed scramble to retrieve the ball, whereupon the whole process starts again.
The first recorded incidence of the game being played was in 1766, though the most important game of the year is the St. Andrews Day game, first played in 1844.

Duke University has a freshman linebacker named Memorable Factor (I'm not making this up) who has never played a down of football in his life. He graduated from Eton. I can only imagine the convos between Memorable and D'Quan from Georgia and Malik from Tennessee.

It's a really silly and violent game tbh. Guys in my house who played would often come back with huge cuts all over their face and body from being dragged/slammed against the wall - way more so than rugby or the field game. People have died from being trampled to death in the past - the small arches at the bottom of the wall were filled in with concrete after a boy's head got stuck and he drowned in the mud.

We use to play this at school, pretty similar rules but with no goals , we called it death football and it usually started when a football was nicked of some younger boys and "death football " was shouted out.

Is this elite because you need to give your v-card to a master to make the team? Otherwise it seems like a just another game, the only distinguishing feature of which is that it's played by the children of the rich.

We played a game in school the sports master called Murder.
In the gym, all the apparatus, ropes, climbing bars out.
A medicine ball at each end.
    Played using a basketball.
Divide the class into two teams.
Object.. touch the basketball against the other team’s medicine ball.
Only rule of play, no punching in the face.
It was mayhem and we loved it.
Couldn’t imagine Health and Safety allowing it now. So they won’t be playing it 300 years hence.
