It's great to see ashbourne and atherstone ball game taking place again this year after all the shit we have had the last 2 years, my brother Rob Bernard runs the atherstone ball game and it no easy task to keep this game going but we all need to keep shrovetid up and running forever..
I'm still trying to learn the sport. I have questions. Like: are there teams, is there a scoring system. Or is this basically considered like the running of bulls where it's been a pastime for 100s of years that there are people wanting to keep the tradition alive even if there are no actual rules or scoring to the game. I read a quote from a proper geezer "rather break my leg again than to lose". That's the type of passion that keeps me interested in sports.
@@TheTSRush Yep 2 teams depending which side of the river through the town the player was born on and 2 goals in said river 3 miles apart with town between them.
Committing murder or manslaughter is prohibited. Unnecessary violence is frowned upon. The ball may not be carried in a motorised vehicle. The ball may not be hidden in a bag, coat or rucksack, etc. Cemeteries, churchyards and the town memorial gardens are strictly out of bounds. Playing after 10 pm is forbidden. To score a goal the ball must be tapped three times in the area of the goal.
Attended this event in 2017,was a good day out and great to see that this tradition keeps going.
Hello, how does a winner emerge. Like who wins? Oh my God!is it individuals or team work?
@@simisolasaliu72 there a hundreds and hundreds of people on each team.I believe they have to tap the ball 3 times on a millstone to score.
Britain is proper mental. Love it.

I'm torn. Pretty silly if you ask me, considering the pandemic has virtually just started. But then, great to see them enjoy themselves.

Just release the ball mate.
@@TheTSRushI'm curious too, but I see no one's answered your questions

I'd love to see drone footage of this event.
Just thought of bringing out the drone and also getting some camera angles from the windows, ground level...etc.

Mad how this is only up the road from me and I only heard about it a few years back
New sub glad to find your channel
Whats the rules? You have to punch whoever has the ball and then throw it?
In a nut shell, yes.

is there a way to distinguish between and up’ard and a down’ard? like do they wear a certain colour?
Not really - I think most of the locals know who on which side... I think.
I think its along the lines of if somebodys pushing in the he opposite direction or punching you in rhe face hes probably on rhe other team🤔
Rest in peace Mitch ❤

If this is held in USA, 15minutes after the game start, people will be breaking and robbing the shops.
I learnt they don’t have shops there 😜
you can only do any game like this with a town of people who have been living together for hundreds of years.
This is nothing compared to the Atherstone Ball Game
Shrovetide way better
