The "Killer." I love the microphone hanging around his neck. He used to set the crowd on fire when he played live. One way he created excitement and energy was the way he pushed the tempo as the song went on. This recording starts out at about 150 beats per minute, and by the end he's up to 184.
Fantastic! Saw him live at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater about 1960 (he was right after the Isley Bros.). He brought the house down! After the concert, my friends & I saw him outside the threatre flagging down a taxi; we offered hima ride anywhere &, after some hesitation, he accepted, got in the back seat with his guitar, & I drove him to the Hotel Manhattan with my 2 amazed friends. He gave us a little personal concerts in there & told us we'd always be his concert guests.
Lee has always been a favorite of mine, his sound, tone, and eventhing in his music is just so real, not the padded sond of Elvis, but a true tone and style that was all his own. Yes Chuck Berry, and Carl Perkins were also strong contenders, but Lee was not only the "Killer" but he was also the true king.
On this day in 1958 {February 15th} Jerry Lee Lewis performed "Great Balls of Fire" on the Saturday night ABC-TV program 'The Dick Clark Show'... Three months earlier on November 16th, 1957 it entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} and spent 21 weeks on the Top 100... Reached #1 in U.K {Jan. 10th for 2 weeks} and Billboard's Country chart {Jan. 6th for 2 weeks}... And #3 on R&B chart R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012} & The Killer turned 77 this past Sept. 29th
Well personally, I don't get why people get bothered by it so much. I think it's awesome that the younger ones are listening to this stuff. I'd rather them to listen to Jerry Lee than whatever the music industry's trying to shove down their throats these days. I know it's something you hear a lot, but hell, I don't get tired of hearing it.
I am 17 and like anybody cares how old you are. The difference of people who came here is only that we like good music and not crapy todays music which is made with programs
most music today is missing that untamed energy of some of these early rock figures that also had a tremendous ability to play their instruments and write songs and such (or at least take someone else's song and give themselves into it as opposed to just practically digitally adding themselves in)
Best hairdo ever. No male had long hair at this time, I don't mean it was uncommon or rare, I mean zip, zero, nada. He had that long hair that he could comb and it would look normal but then he could get crazy and flip it around and you saw how long it was.
Here's your LAST MAN STANDING. He's left behind, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Oribson, Charlie Rich, etc. All greats. All gone. But Killer is stil rocking! Check out his new album, MEAN OLD MAN and see what The Eye means. God bless ya, old Jerry Lee.
This is actually the Dick Clark Saturday Night Beech Nut (chewing gum) Show. Note the auditorium setting as opposed to the American Bandstand weekdays set. The performers usually were live on the Saturday night show.
This performance was one of only a couple that were ever done life and not lip-synching to a recording on Dick Clark's Saturday Night Show. In fact, I think this was the only appearance that was live. Jerry did also perform "Breathless" live that same evening.
im a 13 year old boy and i listen to this, gotta love the classics

Thank you so much Jerry Lee Lewis...
This is one of my favorite songs : )
Love Jerry Lee, and love the fact that he's Jimmy Swaggart's cousin more. Amazing piano man! I can never decide between him and lil Richard.
I'm 12 about to be 13 in a few days, but i personaly think this kind of music is so much better than the music now

God Bless Jerry Lee Lewis, 1 of the true founding fathers of Rock and Roll!!! 1 of my heroes! Gotta love that Pumpin Piana sound!!

Classic Jerry Lee! This is the Jerry Lee I saw in a great show in Norfolk, VA when I was in the Navy back in 1961,

They say Elvis was the King. This Man opened the gate & let us all get a taste of what music is all about. Long live Jerry Lee !!!

Our football team is playing the high school from Ferriday where he was born and he is performing halftime... Pretty crazy I must say.
I wish all artists sounded this amazing live!
Jerry Lee and Little Richard PUSHED the "Elvis" card and ROCK would not be COMPLETE without him/them!
In looking back, there's lots of pizzazz in this song and it still holds up to the energy in popular music today. Good post.
One of the best. Top this performance musically, outfit, talent, piano, man, rock and roll. Do it.
Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Chuk Berry! The Kings!!!!
I love playing this song in marching band. =D So much fun...
Purest Rock'n'Roll!!

THE BEST PIANO ROCK SONG.
You can't pack more talent in to one man!
It doesn't matter the age, sex, color, whatever; anyone can admire the classics. Whoever doesn't, they got no taste.
He is the best!!
Only guy who absolutely refused to lip synch his hits on American Bandstand.
The Killer. I love Jerry Lee Lewis. He was so crazy and didnt care.

the movie Great Balls of Fire was good.Dennis Quaid did a good job playing Jerry Lee
True rock 'n' roll awesomeness

This is actually the Dick Clark Saturday Night Beech Nut (chewing gum) Show. Note the auditorium setting as opposed to the American Bandstand weekdays set. The performers usually were live on the Saturday night show.
THIS IS IS INSANE look at his hands
One of the few reasons to appreciate being American. Oh, Jerry!
Happy Birthday, Killer!
It used to said that after Jerry Lee played a piano for a few songs it usually wasn't a usable instrument afterward.
@papstbenni Thank god for us aware of that era. Thank god I lived it.
Badass.
first song i ever listened to oooowah
Great style and even greater entertainer . . . once upon a time, it seems to me . . .
He was quite a madman!
ROCK 'N ROLL!!!
