  • A gamble paid off after a heads up that three Classic aircraft had night stopped at Llanbedr airfield over a weekend. What an opportunity for them to fly the "mach loop' and they did!
The Nanchang was the first to enter.

A Vampire entered a appropriate Jet class at "RENO" a few years back. Everyone chuckled, until the Vampire began passing the soon to be defenders. It was Beautiful!

There is something just so incredibly cool about twin boom aircraft. It doesn't look wrong, but it contradicts everything you normally think about with plane designs you see everyday.

Pretty cool to see some 2nd gen jets through the loop, that Vampire is pristinely preserved like a classic auto and love that "whistle" sound.

Awesome video! What a strike of luck.... A Norwegian friend of mine, Kenneth Aarkvisla, actually owned a Vampire and flew it in displays for many years. He later sold it for a YAK, but the Vampire still holds a special place in his heart. And in mine. Such an iconic airplane. I am also a Norwegian pilot, but has only flown the T6 myself when it comes to classic birds. Merry Christmas :-)

Back in the 60`s both types were operated out of RAF Linton on Ouse, being a line technician I got to fly in both types a few times, sadly not through the Mach loop!

Dai awn Dafydd. Jet provest , My first powered aircraft flight at 13 yo. 35 mins. 5 loops and 3 rolls. First I'd follow with hands on the stick, then the pilot would fold his arms and say,' you have control - you have a go.' I remember saying I'd flown gliders and he replied, OK, this is a glider. Wonderful aircraft and so easy to fly. .Vampire. Looks and sounds like a whistle. I assembled one at Rhoose Airport. I lifted the canopy to find one or two inches of balsa wood sandwiched between thin layers of plywood. Great video, Diolch yn fawr.

The Nanchang is a less powerful Chinese version of the Yak52, one of which (G-BWVR) I had a share in for a few years. Cost me a fortune, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Aerobatically unlimited, amazing power - much more warbird than light aeroplane. Unbreakable unless you flew it into the ground.
Does the Vampire have bang seats? I reckon I'd have a pretty good chance of putting the Nanchang into a field for a survivable (for the pilot if not the aeroplane) forced landing if the engine fails, but the Vampire.. no chance.

I was told a long time ago that the Jet Provost was the only jet you could fly on an ordinary pilots licence, I am sure someone here can correct me on the different levels of licence. There was a Provost that flew out of North Weald, Essex but I haven't seen it for some time, great to see some are still flying, I remember seeing the Vampire when I was a kid, we British had a real flair for producing some fantastic aircraft. thanks for posting this.
