Mach Loop good again? An incredible 2-day diary of events

- In this video, I ask the question, is the Mach Loop great again. This a 2-day diary of events. You decide!
I travelled to the Mach Loop last week to capture images of military aircraft screaming through the valleys in Mid Wales. My intention was to film my two-day trip so that I could create a film for my RUclips channel.
My original plan was to go there just to try out the Nikon gear I was sponsored to use. If you're looking to put a camera through its paces then where else could be better?
As it happens, I couldn't believe just how incredible the Loop is these days. I usually frequent the area on a monthly basis but never during the school summer holidays. Because of this, I haven't been to the loop in a couple of months. My two previous trips were very busy also but I simply put that down to luck. Maybe, and sadly, for all the wrong reasons I'm sure, the Loop is actually worth visiting again!
Bit of a spoiler alert but the following is a diary of events that played out for me during my 2 days there...
Wednesday (4th October 2023)
08:15 Texan
09:15 F35's x2
11:05 Texan
12:10 F15's x 3 (3 passes)
13:00 F35
14:00 Typhoon (2 passes)
17:00 Hawk
Thursday (5th October 2023)
11:00 Hercules
11:05 Texan x2
12:30 F35's x4 (4 Passes)
Pretty decent even though I missed more than I captured 🤣🤣
I hope you enjoy the video.

When we bought a house in 2018, my one stipulation was that the house needed to be under the Loop.
Man, what a great 5 years it's been. Every day I hear these thunder Eagles over my house. If I'm outside, I am often shocked and awed at the low altitude they fly overhead.
Brilliant photos and videos on your channel - thanks for that
Outstanding! What a fabulous opportunity to capture these birds in action. Absolutely outstanding!👍👍👍
Wow Gary those shots were outstanding. Its as tho them pilots knew you were there. Amazing. Love the one where you see the pilots name " Capt John Self." Wow wow wow. 😊
Phenomenal detail in the images Gary, especially that one of the Navigator giving you the thumbs up, what a capture that one was
Thakns Gary, after many years of internet watching and spotting for 56 years I can give you a huge thumbs up for your very helptul down to earth reporting. No nonsense just fun and fine coverage of many aspects of air phototography. Ps i am also a Pro photog in N Scotland so the loops not an easy target!
Cheers Gary. Kind of you to say 👍👍
The Typhoon styled it through The Loop. Loved the shot with the F15SE and the REMO giving the 'hang loose' sign. And overall lesson learned, if you see Gary on the viewing area you're in for a show.
Cheers Thomas 👍👍
Love a house right up on top of that hill. The sound of freedom is soothing.
That typhoon pass and the pictures you got of it were incredible 😎😎😎😎
WOW that Typhoon was amazing and you was so lucky Gary, well done.
The F15 pilots always delivery a good show as well and I never get tired of watching them flying their aircraft, just love aviation photography.
One thing for sure is, you are the Mach loop king Gary !! Absolutely fabulous !!
Cheers Darren. I’ll take you up there one day 👍👍
Some of your best photos of the loop ever Gary. Awesome job. That shot at 4:35 is outstanding.
Great shots, I'm sure you're gutted to miss the 35Bs on your first day. The 8 F35s on the Thursday was awesome to watch 👌
I was. I felt a real muppet. Thankfully, it turned out well in the end 👍👍
Brillaint videonas per usual, love that you describe the day/s as they are they're not action all day everyday.
Great photos as well love the sharpness you caught on the 35s especially 👏👏👏
Absolute WOW! These are some of the best frames Ive seen of the mach loop. If I were you, I'd be making the permanent switch to Nikon. That Z8 is phenomenal.
Thanks 👍👍
Fantastic Gary. Great to see you got a thumbs up from the back seat. I was lucky enough to get a thumbs up from an A10 pilot back in the 90''s but it wasn't at he mach loop. It was at a disused RAF base (Honeyborne) where I was working on a scaffold at he time. They used the old 'J' type hanger as a practice target for laser bomb runs so they came in extremely low. I put my thumb up to the pilot and got one back in return. Great images mate and no, can't spot the difference. Thanks for sharing mate.
Looks like another fabulous day at the Mach Loop. I'm surprised they flew with the low cloud but they only get better by flying in all conditions. Looked a little colder and wetter than the July trip! Still you got some great pics and videos, love the ones with the vapour pouring off the wings.
Your bad weather shots are fantastic Gary, I hope you didn't catch a cold.
lol. Plenty of thermals on 😁😁
Absolutely superb footage and shots...what a great place..here in Northern Ireland we have to wait on airshows to get shots of jets etc....many thanks and best wishes
Cheers Andy 👍👍
What a fantastic video. 😮😮😮 … even without the ‘birds’ this valley seems to be a nice locations for great photographs. Speaking of it, you nailed some amazing images. Kudos to the pilots as they seemed to have contributed their parts to these stunning images. I would love to go some day … great stuff ❤ … cheers.
Looks like a couple great days, Gary! I need to thank you. I used what I learned from you videos to photography my first airshow in Atlanta. I have a ton of photos to go through, but I got some shots of prop planes, helicopters and the F22 Raptor that turned out great! I really appreciate what you shared which helped me have such a successful day.
Then all my hard work was well worth it 👍👍 Thank you
You must be REALY REALY dedicated to your art. Well Done, beautiful pictures and video. A group of us climbed Cadair Idris (Idris's Chair) When I was A teenager and we were camping near Tal-y-llyn Lake. We climbed as far as the lake that formed the seat of the chair. It was a beautiful day and the lake was so calm it reflected the sky. I had a real felling of vertigo when we came on the lake, it looked like we were looking down thousands of feet. Thanks again for the great videos.
Simply BEAUTIFUL...!
Thank you so much for what you are doing..
Kindest Regards.
Wow, Stunning,
Cheers 👍👍
Thank you very much Gary.
Really appreciate your efforts.
I have been going to the mach loop for ten years.
Love the place .
We leave here ( in Hampshire ) and go down for 5 days, much walking and good pubs.
It's also a very nice valley, Hew who owns the farm is a great guy.
Tomorrow I have business in Norfolk with my Brother.
So keeping here at 5am.
Stopping at Lakenheath.
Hoping to get some action .
Best wishes to you.
Thanks Gary
simply outstanding I may have commented last week about the sharpness of the images but believe me those images were tack sharp also loved the ones where you could see propellor movement so less than 125th/second I would assume. Great images allround.
For the record it was 8 F35 did two passes
I never even looked at the tail numbers. Cheers pal 👍👍
Awesome Gary! Thanks for uploading and braving the autumn weather.. 😊
Great
Great video and photos....If i had know it was you on top of east, i'd have popped over and said hello on my way down!!
Sorry 😁
Thanks, G.G.!
Absolutely splendid, awesome videos and pictures... Une merveille !

Incredible!! Just shows bad weather doesn’t mean a blank day!!
The Nikon Z8 results look out of this world!! Loved hearing the sound of it mixed in with the Jets 😱 bbbrrrrrrrrrhhhh 👍🏻

Fantastic video and shots Gary. Loved it. It's always going to be a lottery.
Great video Gary and cracking shots 👌🏻📷
Fascinating!
As always awesome pictures and awesome video,I would love to spend a few days there 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Good video Gary, just a shame you wasn't on West on you second day too, still very good.
I kind of thought that. I’m still happy with the results though. Plus, one of the pilots has already emailed me asking for prints. Fairly happy with that 👍👍
Excellent. A shame the Heritage Jet has now been repainted too, still nice to capture it still with the air brake painted though.
@DarrenEdwardsAviation it’s good that they keep changing them. They become like collectors images 👍
Wowzers!! What an ace video. Superb quality pictures, especially considering the conditions. 👍👍👍
superb Gary - one place I need to visit
Great video's thank you
Superb photography ..
Brilliant shots and a great watch
Cheers 👍👍
Some fantastic images Gary, but a little surprised you didn't comment on your conclusions re the quality of images from the Z8.
Wow totally amazing Gary . Looks like you had a great time. Excellent images as usual.👍👍
Thanks 👍
Wow. Incredible photos, Gary.
Many thanks
Nikon knew what they were doing when they put their Zed 8 into your hands! Flipping amazing photos! Thanks for taking me along!
Always love these videos Gary, some stunning images, may I say possibly your best from the Loop! The Nikon seems to be doing very well! You going to be switching to Nikon? Once again stunning images I think the conditions added to the drama in some shots, thanks for sharing.
Cheers John 👍 absolutely not btw 😁😁
Brilliant video and photos! Cant wait to go up next Monday 👍
Great video and still Gary. Excellent work
Nice one Gary fab photos 👍👍👍
Wow.. what else can one say but WOW. Really nice of those F-15 pilots to give you guys some photo passes. They came out awesome. Mach Loop is on my bucket list for one day. Not sure I will ever get there but I really hope I do.
Not been through all the comment incase it’s been said, but it wasn’t a single F35 on Wednesday, it was an F15. Just for accuracy purposes 👍🏻
Oh cool. I didn’t even see it. I don’t feel so bad now 😂😂 cheers for the info 👍👍
Incredible thumbs up! And not the chap in the tent! The Typhoons are my fav! He barrel turned the fecker!! Day 2 flipping bonkers!!!! Well done bud in suck testing conditions. The Nikon wins
Cheers. One day I’ll convince you to come down. Not sure we’ll both fit in the tent mind you 😂😂
Love the 🤙
Cheers
Excellent shots gar
Cheers David 👍👍
Wow, quite cool. Well done
Great stuff!
Thanks!
Top drawer, those head on shots are tremendous.
so awesome, the one at 04:35 is epic. No doubt you'll have the pilots after some of your photos to hang up on there walls
Amazing what you're able to get out of the Z8 and 100-400. I do own the same combo, but clearly need to push them more.
Excellent video Gary, great to meet you on Wednesday. Fantastic photos and the IPhone footage is great. Great to see myself taking shelter in the tent. Pleasure to have met you and whilst I wasn't on a hill on the Thursday I did get to see the F35s at Corris. Pretty busy two days that's for sure.
It wasn’t on the Tuesday though 😂
@davidlear9597 the misery of wind and rain was more than made up for on the Wednesday haha
After spending a week in North Wales,we came down the A470.I notice about half a dozen people up the hills to our right so presumably the aircraft use the whole loop.
Wow what a stunning video again Gary. I plan to visit the Machloop in 2024. But because I’m from The Netherlands I’ll have to carefully plan my trip. Can you give me a tip in what week to plan a trip or will it always be a gamble. Of course the weather conditions have to be good. Hope you can help me.
I'm going in October half term fingers crossed the weather is good 🤞 also I loved when the f15 copilot did the 🤘
Absolutely superb!
Wonderful video. I did the same in Italy last year with a Canon though 😊
Incredible, hard to imagine a place where you can beter images than these.
Surprised to see the LN F-15s. I’m detached from the U K military scene these days (living in Canada) but I thought I’d read that the Eagles had left the Heath!? Would love to visit the loop if/when zoom back in Blighty.
Great video Gary & lovely shots.
Great images Gary. Had few good days with the f18s from canada. U should give spur and blwch a try they both my fave spots
you jammy git ! av still not been here however am off work at the end of the month so just might do it then 👍
Some banging shots btw 📷👌😊
Brilliant BUT can you actually repeat the video with all the settings per shot ?
It would be interesting to know what ISO your images were at because they’re lovely sharp and detailed.
Really looking forward to the Z8 final opinion video. I’ve got a D500 so looking for some comments of focus speed/tracking, etc.
4:32 damn that’s the money shot. 🤩
Stunning as usual, Gary. Just curious, what is your “keeper rate”?
Yes yes
Hi Gary
Fantastic pictures! Congratulations!
Being a proud owner of a Z8 myself (for 3 weeks or so), I was wondering if you could share the settings of the pictures you showed in the video (apperture, speed, ISO, focus mode, etc.)?
The reason for asking: I went to a airshow (Axalp ground target shooting in Switzerland, to be precise) earlier this week. And I was to a certain degree disapointed with the results. I was anticipating some problems, as I'm certainly not fully on top of this camera beast, yet. But still: For example the autofocus in 3D mode struggeled quite a bit on the faster planes. And the amount of noise at 800 - 1200 ISO is much more than what I expected. I would assume it was partially because at this particular locations you have to shoot largely against the sun.
So could you share your experience in that area?
05:00 It was a single F15 not an F35. I missed it as well as I had put the camera back in the bag to protect it from the heavy rain. I had a nice head on shot of the Tiffy though.
Yeah, somebody else mentioned it. I didn’t even see it I was buried in my tent 😂
Somebody told me it was an F35.
Cheers 👍👍
GRAZY NOISE....
Was a great day, your f35 at 1pm was 100% an f15 though, we were on exit and it went straight over the top of us at that time and down to you at cad west
So a n Eagle out of Lakenheath then as were the F-35s. Good to know our TransAtlantic cousins are still here.
Awesome images - I see the F35's are clean without Luneburg lenses too!
My understanding is that is quite rare?
I’d love to know all the settings you used to capture these amazing images???
Mainly 2000th second for the jets and 125th second for the prop aircraft
Great work Garry!! Could l possibly give you an idea for a video? I've been to the loop few times and l love it but l always go to cad west. Its more convenient l guess. What's the pros and cons of west v east?
Good idea. I’ll sort a video out 👍👍
Brilliant shots Gary! I am just waiting for delivery of a GoPro Hero 12 and in your video, have you mounted it off the hotshoe and what bracket do you use for this? I would be extremely grateful for any advice with this. I have been to the CAD West for the first time this year and learnt such a lot previously from your videos and after my first visit I have learnt such a lot for the next one. It was just absolutely incredible and I am definitely hooked!
Search on Amazon for this… “HSU Aluminum Alloy Cold Shoe Adapter for Action Cameras”
It cost me £9.99. Works a treat
That's great and thank you for that Gary@@GaryGough
Great video Gary, when are you announcing the winner of the bag, please?
My apologies. Heaps on atm. I'll draw it later this week. Sorry again
How did you find the Nikon compared to a Canon? Bad weather but good weather for fluffing! Some great shots 📸
I certainly loved the 20FPS 👍👍
Great images. What lens did you use please?
Hi Jon, I used the 100 - 400mm. That’s probably the perfect lens for the loop.
Cheers 👍👍
@@GaryGough Thank you. Together with the Z8?
