There’s actually a really good moral to this story on top of it being well written and creepy. We can endlessly speculate and literally drive ourselves insane over possibilities, but at the end of the day there is no changing the past. Therefore, the what-if Man should've told him that he'd have to ask something else or simply not told him anything. But, he did. He answered that question. That's illegal.

I like how the story is thematically consistent with the tendency for people to get caught up in "what ifs." Its more about the real danger of dwelling on a life you've never lived and what could have been than it is about a monster and a ritual. Super awesome story overall.
But can't you also ask what if about your future instead of the past? What if I go into this professional field? What if I move to Connecticut? What if I don't stop smoking? You could find the best way to steer your future, right?

If you ask him that question, you will either be satisfied with the answer, or you wont be, in which case you keep asking him what if questions about making this change or that, until you get to an outcome you like. The thing he takes is your peace of mind. The reason it takes some people more questions to hit that limit is because some people have the mental fortitude not to dwell on everything he’s said and shown and other’s don’t. I imagine some people could ask him all the questions in the world and lose nothing while some would lose everything after just one.
