As a resident of the center of the Western world-Bree, I have a major announcement! The Prancing Pony is now serving Farmer Maggots famous mushrooms on a fresh baked loaf with venison strips and a delicious draft of their magical beer. I give this new offering four stars ⭐️!
By the way, that explains why Merry knew to order a pint at the Prancing Pony: his people lived near the borders of the Shire, and some of them visited Bree on occasion.
"You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin - to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours - closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo." -- Merry, A Conspiracy Unmasked
Frodo brought the Ring from the Shire to Mount Doom; Sam accompanied Frodo and stabbed Shelob, greatest of Ungoliant's offspring; Pippin became a Guard of the Citadel, and killed an Olog-Hai by himself in the final battle; and Merry became a knight of Rohan and wounded the Witch-King. They might have looked like children, but their deeds were legendary.
Fredagar Bolger should have had at least a small part in the Lord of The Rings films before they left the Shire. He was a great deal of help in that regard.
One minor detail: since Merry was the oldest of the Hobbits save Frodo, he, as himself put it "I put my time [in Rivendell] to better use" and while he said only enough at the time when Elrond was deliberating (and remember, in the book it was after the main discussion) to get invited along to go, he not only got a fair idea of some of the areas they would have to travel through, he gave himself a crash course in Middle earth cartography, and knew where they were in Rohan and was able to guide himself and Pippen toward the most likely places they might find help and certainly fresh water. Being that he was the adult son of a great house, it gave him a better idea of how to conduct himself with other high status adults and he had an education in how to lead others and run a small county/ large household. The quote was from TTT, Treebeard chapter IIRC.
@Marie Roberts Yes. Sam was born in 1380, which stuck out to me when I realized that was the same year Frodo's parents died. Merry was born two years later. Merry can come across as older though, so it's an easy mistake to make. And it makes sense that it's Merry who is the one who studied all those maps while at Rivendell, given how quickly the Old Forest, on his own border, threw them all for a loop. He's the kind who likes to be prepared, and after the Old Forest, which he thought he was prepared to handle, he'd really want to make sure he knew as much about any lands they might possibly come across as he could.
“His grief he will not forget; but it will not darken his heart, it will teach him wisdom.” - Aragorn about Merry. Thank you for this excellent video about my favourite character!
Like many heroes Meriadoc Brandybuck became one by mistake, proving once again that punishing times don't create heroes, rather it is during those times when the 'hero' within us is revealed.
The fact that Merry and Pippin are official knights of Rohan and Gondor despite not belonging to these nations shows the amount of repsect they earned ,not to mention they were also Aragons counselors and stewarts of the northern part of the reunited kingdom
In The Scouring, while it's Pippin who brings the Took army, Merry is the one giving the orders. "Merry laid his plans quickly" the text says, when it becomes obvious the ruffians had no one among them who understood warfare. Thus my conclusion: Pippin, while a great captain and champion, is just that. It is Merry who is the commanding general who leads from the front lines. It was his strategems that helped win the Battle of Bywater.
Very Medieval of Tolkien eh? A lord in command of strategy (the heir of theThain) but with a more junior noble in charge of tactics (the son of the Master of Buckland). It suits them well I say, for the Tooks lead the Hobbits from the very heartland of the Shire, while the Masters of Buckland are more akin to marcher lords in the very edges of their homeland. Quite appropriately too he was made esquire in Rohan, a marcher realm of sorts for Gondor. Got to love how the old professor weaved his themes with such subtlety and foresight.
@@AugustusR I short, Pippin was the Crown Prince of the Shire, as the eldest son of the Thain. That's why in the Minas Tirith, people said, a prince is here.

This is a great video, reminding that, in the eyes of truly noble people, the bonds of friendship have no limit to birth or title. Even someone who began as a Hobbit of simple means and life can become brother to kings of Men and laid next to them after death as family.
One of the few changes to the storyline that the movies made which I actually like was Merry knowing that Dernhelm was actually Eowyn right from the start. It seemed somewhat unbelievable to me that he could ride with her all the way from Edoras to Minas Tirith without ever hearing or recognizing her voice even once.
“But you’re part of this world! Aren’t you?” One of the best hobbits ever 😁 He seems like a friend that would eat everything on the table but save u a plate Reminds me of those small toy dogs that know they’re bigger than they really are haha But he’s loyal, persistent, and brave. I’d definitely travel the lands with him. Bonus if pippin the instigator was with him
My favourite part of his story is that everyone in Gondor thought he was a prince because he addressed Denethor informally. They didn't know that this was actually a faux pas from Pippin because he simply had no idea of courtly behaviour.
Merry may not be a prominent character in LOTR, but he was still important, always loyal to Frodo and his friends. He was determined not to be left behind in the Battle of the Pelennor fields and his determination paid off.
Merry, as he sees Éowyn facing the Witch King: "For into Merry’s mind flashed the memory of the face that he saw at the riding from Dunharrow: the face of one that goes seeking death, having no hope. Pity filled his heart and great wonder, and suddenly the slow-kindled courage of his race awoke. He clenched his hand. She should not die, so fair, so desperate! At least she should not die alone, unaided." I think about this scene & quote often, b/c I want to approach Merry's courage and valor in any and all situations.
Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took and Frodo Baggins all played key roles in The LOTR, but Samwise "The Brave" Gamgee must go down as The Best Of All Hobbits. "Without Sam, Frodo wouldn't have got far" were true and fair words spoken by his friend and "master" Frodo Baggins. And he should know. Plus all he did after The Scouring Of The Shire. But Meriadoc Brandybuck certainly played his rather large part in the story, and played it very, very well.
Much of the Nazguls' power came from being able to instill fear into men including women (but probably not elves, or high elves). Their mere presence was enough. My belief is this power is greater when focused on their adversary. The witch king probably did note Dernhelm with a halfling, though his primary focus was on Theoden. Hence WK paid no heed to Merry. Also, Merry wanted to stand with Eowyn more than his fear of death. Eowyn at this point was beyond fear after being rejected by Aragorn (to ride with him), and then seeing Theoden possibly slain.
I believe from the very beginning Merry knew best what the quest meant, save perhaps the finite details until Rivendell. I think Gandalf saw a wisdom in him, and probably spoke to him in detail about the coming darkness well before Frodo left the Shire, in fact I think he knew intimately what Frodo was up against
Amazing content as always:) I wonder if you would do a hypothetical "what if the dwarves where at pelennor fields", love to see that content good sir , thank you for all your hard work !!
It is always interesting how the Shire political structure changed in the aftermath of the War of the Ring. First the three-way power split between the Thain, Master, and Mayor will expand to include the residents of Bag-End and Sam's daughter's line in the Tower Hills. Second, it seems that all sides of the Baggins family, members of the gentry with marriages into both the Took and Brandybuck aristocracy and the more wealthy Sackville-Baggins cousins, are no more, but instead are replaced and surpassed by the nouvaeu riche Gamgees, who actually by dent of Sam's long standing as Mayor, his friendships with the Thain, Master, and King, and his daughter both marrying a Took and becoming the first generation to establish holdings in the Tower Hills, also join the ranks of the aristocracy, doubling the size of that class in a single generation.
Oh sorry, it was actually Pippin who did it, Merry just went along with it. As Thomas said, I think Bilbo’s stories, and the Council of Elrond discussing him probably gave them enough info on how to do a proper Gollum impression lol
Merry is one of my favorite characters, but I feel he's often overlooked or lost in the shuffle of the Fellowship. He's brave, true, kind, and stalwart. Not quite the goofy dork that he's portrayed as in the films. I always had a crush on him when I was growing up and first read LOTR!
If Marry was 37 in 3018 then 17 years earlier at ninlo's birthday party he would hae been 19 andPippin would have been younger while Frodo had just turned 33 on the same day.

Something I wonder about is that besides Merry, Pippin and Fatty, Folco Boffin was also in Frodo's inner circle of friends at the beginning of the story; but, for some reason, he is not among the conspirators. It makes me wonder if maybe Folco was a bit of a blabbermouth who couldn't be trusted with a secret.
Sam and Frodo discussed that only a small part was played in any great tale by any one hero. But without all the little heroes with less dramatic stage tires, those great tales could never have been written.
Imagine if Tolien had been cheeky and wrote Merry as a very dour, grouchy, pessimistic, grumpy in nature Hobbit. That irony does strike me as rather English.
I listened to LOTR's audio books and I didn't hear a lot of what you said. Either I missed quite a bit or some of Merry's story was in the appendices. I have watched the movies hundreds of times, but there is so much more!! Can anyone help me to get more of the story please?! Thanks!❤
It's quite in between the lines, as much else with Tolkien's written works. It's implied here, insinuated there, and implicated all over. The idea is not to have the character clearcut, but defined in your own imagination based on what you get to know - the rest you figure out own your own. It's just Tolkien's style.

No, without Pippin no good end possible because all his ''mistakes'' had a great sens in the story and helped to the good end. I am almost arrived to the conclusion that he is the true secret hero of the story.
@@daniellefaure9817 hm. Interesting I see your point. In other words some of those "mistakes" might have been in a roundabout way helpful to the quest to destroy the Ring. Sauron thinks Pippin is Frodo, for example. They are certainly great in a storytelling way.

It makes me wonder if maybe Folco was a bit of a blabbermouth who couldn't be trusted with a secret.
Wasaaaaaaa
Sam and Frodo discussed that only a small part was played in any great tale by any one hero. But without all the little heroes with less dramatic stage tires, those great tales could never have been written.
Don't forget the 5th "conspirator", Folco Boffin.
It's just Tolkien's style.
question did part of sauron spirit go i the eye tower aswell n if not how did it move around n how did he split his spirit n the ring tower n body seem like to much bro pulled a voldemort or i guess voldemort copyed him

You all everybody.
What if Sauron sent numenor east instead of weet to conquer his enemies
Yoystan, do you think I'm not persistent? 😉😂👍
What if Gandalf didn’t fall in Moira next week. It’s finally happening.
If any of you are fans of CS Lewis and ( Tolkien Best friend ) and his writings you might like a Narnia RUclips channel called going into the wardrobe which explains
the history and lore of Narnia he’s actually planning on doing what if’s I also think he’s planning on doing crossovers with the Lord of the rings and the Narnia series so that would be interesting to see
I love lord the rings and Narnia series’s I love both their writings
Why do only Hobbits have last names?
He brokered Crickhollow
Yeah as far as hobbits go merry is kind of a big deal 😎
Excellent video! After watching this video, its sad that the movie didnt really portray Merry properly. In the movies, he's never made to be this wise and resourceful. Excellent work!
This is one of the changes that they made in the movie which erred one of the most vital characters in the story. The Holdwine that would be there for you even when he is unasked or pushed away.
Merry is definitely better than Pippin. Pippin is a buffoon who always gets the Fellowship in trouble
@@westbethkid thank you for your answer. It seams to me that the... Sorry I'm french and it's difficult for me to write in english. I will come again to explain my theorie... Because I had too a bad opinion about Pippin and I have change my mind.
Wow. The movies did Merry a great disservice.
"No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it..."
Well...there weren't any mightier hands at hand.
Please start speaking out against The Rings Of Power. You have a lot of sway with people who are true Tolkien fans. What is happening with Amazon is clearly a bastardization of what Tolkien had in mind. I love your channel and I know you have the power to keep those on the right track. Be a Gandalf in these seriously tumultuous times in the world of Arda.
He is entitled to his opinion whether its good or bad on the show. I just hope he didn't take the England trip to go see Annatar (show runner) and his gifts (free shit from amazon) like so many other Tolkien youtubers have. So sick of access journalism/influencers and their high praise of really bad shit because they took the money/free shit.
first* second =(
Not quite. Longshanks beat you by about 30 seconds.
@@Thomas.Wright I know 😭😭 was sooo excited and thought too long what comment to make 😂
Bruh, are you recording your audio in the bathroom? Mad echo always
